  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

HID to LED Headlight Conversion

Hey guys, I'm sorry I haven't finished this yet. Been caught up with some family issues, but that's another story. I was able to source the female headlight connector but not the male connector to make my harness. Also, I was working on designing a small circuit board to add inline to the harness in order to have the capacitor and relay in a smaller footprint, solid state relay vs. mechanical and have a clean presentation. I feel the shark racing harness is an expensive item to buy and splice up, but currently, that is the only option as of now without having to cut the factory wiring. I'll try to post a pic of my current schematic tonight.

Thanks for the update. Sending positive karma to you on the family front!

I appreciate it, man. My dad has been really sick since December and hasn't recovered. Been really hard trying to deal with it and I am just now really able to approach life in a normal manner. Just doing my best to stay busy and this is one of those things that will keep my head in the game.

Now with all that said, I am not an electrical engineer. I am working with a basic knowledge of electronics and I want anyone who will be doing this to their car to approach at their own risk. I really didn't grasp how much interest there was so the basic design that I implemented may need to be updated once I have someone look at it and verify the electrical worthiness of it. Just have to find a supplier for the male headlight connector and I can make a few.

So I made the plunge today. I ordered G80 Headlights, led foglamps, and Multifunction Switch with the Fog Lamp Switch from ebay. I was so tired of reading about the mod, I just said F it and "git 'er done".
Hi Carlito, Please let me know the cost and where you ordered them from. I'd like to do the same. Thanks

If you can share pictures of your diagram I also can help with verifying the electrical worthiness. I have a few friends who can help. Thank you.

I have been trying to get this to work without using mechanical relays. I feel as though, for long term use solid state would be the way to go for something that lasts a long time and reduces points of failure. I still am not able to find a supplier for the male headlight connectors. Shark Racing's overpriced harness is the only source that I have seen.

If there is anyone that happens to be an electrical engineer, my idea is to create a delay-on circuit of ~1.5sec using MOSFETs instead of mechanical relays. I want to avoid the relay clicking.

This diagram ignores the rest of the headlight requiring because, in my mind, that is trivial. Also the +/- of the capacitor is accidentally flipped. The goal is getting this circuit in a solid state form compatible with 12v systems.

Now, if you don't care about the DRL portion, you won't need the relay, just the capacitor to stop the flickering and you would have the traditional Amber DRLs.

What say you?

Hey CarlitoGR , thank you for the updates.

Hey guys I know I haven't posted on this in a while, but the other night I finally found two companies in China to supply the male connector. I'm trying to work out a deal so that they ship a small batch. They normally want a minimum order of 200 pieces each part. I don't foresee that many folks are interested. Two versions of the harness would make sense, a simple harness that reroutes the stock wiring and allows High-beam and amber LED with a capacitor to prevent DRL flicker also a more complicated harness that would have an SPDT delay-on relay in addition to the capacitor circuit to allow the amber/white switchback. Thanks to @cRaCkZzZz, he got me interested in this effort again. So we are working on getting the parts to make a custom harness.

P.S. If you have a 2016 model, from my understanding you already have the DRL pin that is actually functional, so you would not need a relay, just a capacitor.

I know this thread is kinda burried, but I have a 2018 G80 3.8 and I was in a collision and I replaced the front lights with the LED ones. Right now without any adapters the lights work great during the day, just no high beam. At night when they come on auto, when I use my turning signal, it blinks really fast. Also my lights aren't auto adjusting to be level. I need to readjust them so they shine further. Any insights? I thought since the 2018 would use the same harness, but it doesn't!

You have to repin the terminals in the connector and add a capacitor and probably a relay. Dig into this thread regarding on which terminals you should repin in the connector. The diagram for the experiments is posted above. I made adapters for my 2015 because I didn't want to mess with a factory harness.

I really like the fact you kept the factory harness factory!👍 No molesting of it. That's the way to do it. Take the extra time and do it right .

I totally agree :)

Where your headlights working the same as mine when you just plugged them up without an mods? Mine is a 2018, and I guess I need to find the diagrams for my car and see what needs to be repinned.

I had a little different behavior without an adapter.
1. No high beam
2. DRL is amber and blinking
3. Low beam is off, Parking lights are ok
4. Low beam is on, Parking lights are ok
5. No Auto level
6. No AFLS. required additional wiring and module

I don't have
1.
5.
6.

Where do I find the diagram for a 2018? I will probably hire someone to repin it for me, but I'd like to show them the diagrams. Thanks for the advice!
