If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Early Owner Feedback

Maybe I'm reading this wrong. You do NOT want it to downshift when you floor it? Usually it does that to maintain the optimal RPM and acceleration. Or is it not shifting to the gear of your choice?

You read it correctly. I want a full manual mode where I am in charge of which gear it's in. I want to feel the full natural powerband through my gear of choice. In addition to this, you also get that split second delay for it to downshift instead of getting that power instantly, even though it would be at a very slight mechanical disadvantage by not downshifting. Nevermind the fact that the 3.3's HP peaks around 5.5k, and the rpms above that are declining in power.

Perhaps someday there will be a workaround for this. Some of us love manual transmissions for little reasons like this. Oh well, I knew this coming in to this car, but I still love it despite its *one* fault.

So you do want to downshift but to do it your way. I can see that as a manual mode selection on the tranny where you bump the lever or use paddles. Sure, there are time a stick shift is fun. For the vast majority of drivers, the programmed transmission is what they want or even need. Many drivers have no idea how to use a clutch.

With nannies off...it keeps gears. So not sure what you’re doing wrong.

Even with nannies off, in manual mode, try flooring it in 4th gear around 3500 rpm. Or even 3rd gear, same rpm - it will downshift automatically.

Edit: just tried it in 3rd gear. At 3000 rpm it will downshift to 2nd. At 3250rpm it will stay in 3rd. All nannies off, manual mode.

I wonder if this is the torque converter lockup point

It will do that if you push past that resistance point on the gas pedal, that last little click if that makes sense. Up to that point you are getting full throttle and it won't downshift.

And I can tell you that a Ferrari 458 and Audi R8 V10 both do that exact same thing in manual mode so I think it is common.

Yeah, you're exactly right - as soon as I push the gas pedal passed that little click point then it will downshift if the rpm is low enough.

I didn't know that about those other cars. It makes sense, though, and it makes me feel a bit better about my car. I appreciate it.

It's called throttle kickdown. It's a feature in some automatic transmissions that will activate a downshift when the throttle is fully depressed. As others have said, to "floor it" without the downshift push the throttle pedal to where you feel resistance. Push it further and you will feel more resistance as it goes to the floor; that's the "kickdown zone."

Bingo. The kickdown switch is there as a no-BS way of getting the car to grab the lowest possible gear for the current condition. Keep off the switch and you retain full throttle control.

So yesterday was exactly 1 year with my G70! I ended up with 26,937km on the car in that year. I would have passed 27k but we had snow on the weekend so I didn't drive it but I passed that milestone today.

1 year in still zero regrets. There are some minor things that could be better but overall I am still very happy with the car and it has been aging well. The forecast is crappy for the next week but I think I will treat the car to a detail for its birthday once it improves. :)19623Screenshot_20190428-145303.webp

Awesome. Were you one of the first in NA to get one?

I think so. April 28, 2018 and I don't think they had sold many by then. I first drove one about two weeks earlier, but took a while to decide I was going to leave the German brands lol

Have you actually driven those cars? I've driven an R8 (last generation, V8), McLaren 650S, and lot of other "regular" cars with manual modes and I can guarantee you they will not auto downshift when in the specific manual mode. In fact, no car with a full manual mode does, not even our X6 (non-M) SUV! The "kickdown" feature that others are referring to works in every car even before automatic transmissions with manual shifting came out, and it is intended to work in regular D to give you full power when merging, etc. This is absolutely a shortcoming of the G70, and I pointed it out to the dealer during the initial test drive.

It's really unfortunate that Genesis decided not to include a manual gate in the shifter. I'm pretty sure just about every other car with paddle shifters has that. Not that I care for shifting with the shifter, because the paddles are much better, but in most other cars, that's how you differentiate between full manual vs. temporary manual, which is what the G70 is doing. If you get into a BMW while in any mode, but let's say sport mode, and start shifting with the paddles while the shifter is in "D", it'll shift for you if you floor it and after a while will go back to regular D mode. This is how the G70 is behaving. On the other hand, if you put the shifter in the "manual" gate with the +/-, it will allow you to shift however you want with no interruptions, and will not go back to D unless you put the shifter back in D.

Again, people in this forum will make every excuse. This is a great car, but that doesn't mean you have to cover your eyes and ears and pretend flaws don't exist. P.S. All 3 "competitors" to this car that I test drove had a full manual option with a separate gate in the shifter (C43, S5 Sportback, M340) in their automatic transmissions.

My G37S worked exactly as you described. If I needed a temporary kick I could paddle shift to get around someone and then after a short time normal drive mode returned. I could move my shift lever to the side and go in full manual mode for the most part. I’ve only test drove a G70 a couple of times and did not play around with paddle shifting. I assumed it would work the same as my G37S and have full manual or semi manual that returned to auto mode when no longer paddle shifting. Is this not the case on the G70? My Infiniti in manual mode would down shift on its own as I slowed to a stop and then be in first gear ready to rip. It had a DS sport mode which altered the shift points that kept the RPMs up slightly more in the power band. When it down shifted in DS mode the car felt like a manual transmission car and I could see the tach increase some at each downshift as well as feel it. First car I have owned that felt more like a standard transmission car than a auto.

The temporary thing works like you'd describe, but there's no way to move the shift lever to the side and stay in permanent "manual" mode.

It had a DS sport mode which altered the shift points that kept the RPMs up slightly more in the power band. When it down shifted in DS mode the car felt like a manual transmission car and I could see the tach increase some at each downshift as well as feel it. The G70 has different modes (Comfort/Sport/Eco/Smart) that are selected via a different dial. Sport mode makes a bunch of changes to the car; among them is setting the transmission to be aggressive about shift points and hold onto gears longer.

I think the G70's transmission is much better than the one in the G37 (which I also owned). It's less laggy and less frequently caught wrong-footed. And it does that without holding onto gears for too long, like the Infiniti sometimes could (there would be times with the G37 when I'd be coasting to an offramp and it'd be holding onto a low gear in high RPM, and I'd just blip it over to non-sport mode for a second to force the shift).

@pulsar Exactly. This is how most cars are, but people here will excuse anything Genesis does for some reason. Unfortunately, the G70 is not capable of this as it has no manual gate on the shifter. It'll act exactly like your G37 did if you shifted while in D (i.e. it'll allow you to shift temporarily, and then go back to D eventually. If you're in Sport mode, it won't go back to D unless you stop (at which point, it will go back to D regardless which mode you're on), and it'll downshift and upshift for you regardless. As @Toddasaurus said in his example, if you're in 3rd gear at ~3000RPM, for example, and you press the accelerator all the way, it will downshift regardless. Very unfortunate oversight not to include a manual gate on the shifter; I assume they did it for liability reasons.

I have complaints about the car, which I've posted here over the last few weeks. That said, your whining like a little girl because people here aren't as outraged as you? What do you want them to do, hang on your every word and give you thumbs up. Go protest at Hyundai HQ if your that passoniate.

Excuse you; I love the G70, but I'm opposed to people denying flaws exist or talking down the competition. I guess some people have genuinely fooled themselves into thinking the brand new BMW 340, Audi S5, etc. are trash to feel even better about their purchase.

Besides, what's wrong with my complaint about the lack of a dedicated manual shift gate? I think it's a justifiable complaint, and when others act as if that's the norm, claiming Audis and Ferraris behave in the same manner, you can see how there's a drive to mislead people in order to hide the car's (few, and minute) flaws.

Everyone here is conspiring against your crusade. They're all fanboys blinded to your rage-truth.
