I found an article on a Korean site and the CEO of Hyundai Motors said the third generation platform would be applied to the G80. I don’t know if the platform was made for the G80 but it appears to be a global platform.
The phrasing is a bit ambiguous (as of yet, no statement that the G80 and Sonata will share [name of platform), but if true, very interesting, as Hyundai has been pretty mum about the platform underpinning the next G80 and GV80.
Only thing we know is that they have taken steps to reduce weight, like for the new Sonata (which cut over 100 lbs).
Ford/
Lincoln have their new D6 platform and theoretically, VW's MQB can be adapted to drive the rear axle.
Maybe the confusion is in using the term platform for these, as they are more systems/kits.
A RWD/longitudinal application of the D6 would be quite different from the FWD/transverse version.
Hyundai has been more vocal about its new powertrains - speaking of which...
And no normally aspirated V6 3.8? Or V8 5.0?
My Cousin paid over 60K for a Benz E300 with a 2L 4cyl making 240HP and the thing sounds like a buzzsaw at idle. So unBenzlike. 4cyls make blown power but sound terrible and are jittery. I will take the lower MPG of a V6.
That's one reason why the displacement has been increased to 2.5L; altho the 2.0 will carry on in certain markets/models in an upgraded form (getting the
Smart Stream technologies; not clear if the 2.0 uses the same Theta II block or has been upgraded to Theta III).
Genesis has already stated that the G80 will be the first to get the new 2.5T as its base engine and we also know that the new 3.5T will replace the 3.3T.
Could Genesis add the NA 3.5L as a 3rd engine option?
While I was hoping Hyundai would develop a smaller displacement/FI V8, having an increasingly difficult time seeing a business case for it.
The 3.5T is able to put out 400+ hp; w/ electrification, 500+ hp (w/ early torque) would be doable.
