  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Here is the fix I did to mine... I had initially tried some honda shin etsu grease around the seals, it didn't work. Saw the post by Revvdmedia about the stinger sunroof rattle fix and tried something similar.

There is a notch on both sides of the tracks that the sunroof goes into, this is towards the front of the sunroof opening right behind the windscreen. In the picture below, I believe the stinger forums mentioned putting something down in the area I circled in blue, instead I ended up using some foam tape (pic below) and stuck it in the area I circled in red (after cleaning it really good with rubbing alcohol). No more rattling ever since. Hope it works for some of you.

Is it really that bad that you would turn your car in over this? If you don't lose any money...go for the 2020 Savile...looks awesome.

Thankfully...I don't have this issue. But if I did...I think I would try to gerry rig something myself first (I know folks have tried).

I've found the stuffing-clothes-up-there approach to be somewhat effective. It's been cooler but I haven't heard any sound in some weeks.

I think this fix should work for some people. It makes a lot of sense, especially on a car with symptoms like mine. When it's noisy, it's only when the sunroof glass is totally down (pretty bad) or tilted open (even worse). There is a "foot" on the bottom of the sunroof glass that looks like it sits in this notch (on both sides). Both the "foot" and the "notch" are hard surfaces, both metal, or metal/plastic with no barrier between. It's probably noisy because the contact between the two when it's parked closed, and probably even worse tilted because the foot and notch probably have slightly less pressure against each other, causing even louder more annoying noises. Making the glass slide open takes these two surfaces away from each other, noises go away.

As for why this seems to go away when it is cold, that has been stumping me but I have a bit of a theory now. Right now when it is rather cold, with the glass fully closed, it's almost totally noise free. When I tilt it open, there are still some noises, but less than when it is warm, but still pretty noticeable. Being heat related, what is expanding when it is warm? My original thought was maybe something with the tracks since you can feel the metal of the track does heat up with the sun. My latest theory has to do with all the seals. I'm thinking maybe the rubber of all the seals contracts when it is cold. Maybe this is causing the roof to close tighter, against the notch, reducing the noises substantially. When it warms up, all the seals expand, causing a very minute gap between the foot and the notch and going over imperfections in the road causes contact between the two and rattles.

Anyway, that's all I have on that topic for now. I'll admit there are a lot of parts in that assembly, so who knows.

I would think the seal elasticity could be affected with temp changes. Warm weather generally makes seals softer and more pliable, where cool weather would be more firm. Adding some foam tape in the areas noted sounds promising. I’m hoping 2020 models might not have issues but am not holding my breath. I already have several foam tapes from other projects as well as access to some really good aircraft fuel tank sealant that can provide a really durable rubber coating in an area if the foam tape seems to do the trick. Can’t believe Genesis can’t do a redesign as needed to solve the issue for good.

***UPDATE*** ---- Just got the call. They will be submitting a repurchase offer in a couple days. This makes me feel like they do not know how to fix this issue yet...or just didn't want to spend another dime repairing mine. For the sake of everyone here, I hope they figure out how to resolve this issue soon!!! I'll have a few days to contemplate what I'll do next. Buy a 2020 model or shop elsewhere. Do I flip and get a Supra? Local Toyota has one at MSRP for $55k. I love the new Savile Silver though!

Hot damn - that Saville Silver looks sweet! That's where my vote is.

Been looking at it all day. Only one RWD sport model available that I can see. I'd prefer AWD for my likings and HP goals. I only have a couple days to decide. Down to either another G70 3.3t, a CPO Audi S6, or Kia Rio it till the GV70 arrives.

one of these is not like the others..... :p how did you get to a Kia Rio in this list?

I would say go for the one you really want, except the rio. 😆

Kia Rio - $99 a month till the 3.3t (maybe 3.5t) GV70 arrives. Or till the 3.5t G70 arrives? Damn...choices and Genesis dangling candy in my eyes makes this difficult!
$99 a month ain't bad!

Hope they offer you a good and fair deal. Hope! So far my experience with Hyundai (my wife's car) and with Genesis (my G70 Sport AWD) isn't stellar. This rattle issue having gone so long without being resolved is a big red flag over Genesis. I've yet to have any dealership I've called even acknowledge that Genesis is aware of it. Really? I probably would look at other cars before settling on another Genesis. JMO.

So with the weather turning cold, I have kept the sunroof closed for obvious reasons, and now I'm hearing this creaking sound back right from the drivers position. When I open the sunroof cover only I can hear the sunroof creaking but can't locate the source, however, when I finally open up the sunroof completely the sound goes away. This occurs when just backing out of the driveway.

Is this what others are hearing or something different.

3.3 AWD Sport...

My headliner seems to be the culprit. I push up on drivers side headliner by grab handle and it seems to stop. Frustrating stuff as the car is perfect otherwise!

mine is a G80 sport tho
Someone on the stinger forums fix this exact issue by loosening the bolts in the grab handle slightly. Just need to pop down the little covers and back off the bolts just a little bit. It only takes a couple minutes, worth a try?

Apparently there is no end to the types of noises the roof can make. My variant is like yours, in that I posted here in March, but when spring came I never heard it again. Until now, ugh! The sound is also from the back right, like loose plastic tapping together. In my earlier post I said it seems to happen only after the cabin is warmed up and it's cold outside (e.g. 15+ minutes into the drive). Will pay attention to see if that's still true. Thankfully the tapping is on the quiet side and very infrequent so it's just an annoyance for now. I'm preparing for it to get worse as it gets colder though.

Maybe we get the noise in the winter to give other owners a break.

thanks All - ill try the foam tape in the spring, if the noise comes back

I can say with certainty that the fix I applied previously works. Yesterday I removed the foam tape and the rattle returned. Reapplied it and rattle was gone.

Was yours the heat-related rattle?

Again, I have the same rattle (not as bad as some other folks apparently), but it absolutely get to better or worse with lower/higher temps. Same muted rattle whether it's 95 degrees or 38 degrees. I'm beyond worrying about it at this point. It's muted and tends to go away after driving for 15-30 minutes. I would never have a dealership try to fix it without the process being detailed and straight forward. Just not worth the risk of making a minor issue a major one. JMO.
