  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Transmission issue

I came forums to research mods but now after reading this thread Im to worried to jeopardize warranty. Really annoyed reading all these threads, I really wanted BMW but said NO, go the reliable route.. get the Genesis. Im at 4k Miles, and I'm not sure what good or bad should feel like. The trans is a little rough in down shifting but thought that is just how it is due to being high performance car so expected it to be a little rough. Now reading this I'm wondering if its start of something bad.

I'm in chicago got it in July so drove it in high summer heat and now in winter been driving in high 20s low 30s no real freeze yet. But It feels same in winter. If I start seeing any signs I'm getting rid of, Just stress of having deal with repairs and months of driving an elentra (my luck thats all they will have).

Mine is solid and the vast majority are problem free. There are a relative few with issues but I don't think there is any sort of trend. There are several people tuned to high HP/TQ with no issues and they drive them pretty hard.

Not saying there isn't an issue that may surface over time but so far I don't think there is anything to be worried about!

I've experienced a few of the hard/rough shifting symptoms noted here and I have only 4K on my 3.3T RWD. That being said, I've come to realize that the only times I experienced the issue was when changing modes back and forth while driving at lower speeds accelerating and slowing repeatedly in city traffic. I've NEVER experienced it when I refrain from changing modes at a stop or if changing modes while on the highway.

Cars are SO complex and companies are so motivated to rush designs, engineering and production. I'm wondering if some of these symptoms are due to less than optimum programming and that the symptoms can be minimized by changing drive habits and how and when we use the drive mode selector? I'm not going to count on Genesis developing a easy fix any time soon, given that they've yet to fix the widespread brake vibration issues.

Like @Slip_Angle stated above, these problems we are seeing are still relatively rare. Even with rough shifts, many people in the Stinger forum say they've experienced that since day one, and they are still running strong despite mods after a year or two.

Even so, I think I'm in the same boat as you. I can't help but feel like I can't rely on my car because of common problems we are seeing. It's taken some of the joy of ownership away. The sooner I get rid of my car the more money I'll lose, but the longer I keep my car the more I feel like I'm taking a risk.

Chances are what I'll end up doing is trading in my car when I find a suitable replacement, which most likely won't be until the Giulia and G70 refreshes. I'll lose money for sure, but such is worth the peace of mind for me. I just hope that in the meantime my car doesn't require any warranty work, because I know GMA will deny any claim attributed to my car. 😐

Haha yea your warranty might be iffy. But Yea this is the first new car I've bought I typically get CPO but really wanted G70 and to new for CPO and against my better judgement just splurged and went new. Broke my rule of buying new and also getting a first year model always need to wait to get the kinks out... arrrrrghhh should have just gone with the 340. Ironically If i get rid of it might go in complete new direction Kind of want a Tacoma TRD Pro i'm getting to old to deal with these small low riding cars haha.

My hope would be that the Gulia gets better but history isn't kind. Based on forum posts, I would be a hesitant to get one... On the other hand, Hyundai is high on the list for reliability generally speaking so the odds are in our favor.

In terms of your warranty, you replaced a turbo. They can't deny the rest of the car!

No issues on mine either. Mines a late build so maybe that is a good thing.
The Alfa is cool looking but I’d never buy anything from FCA.

1 week at the dealer and tech can't diagnosed the problem. Corporate tech got involved to assist with step by step troubleshoot so far nothing at this point I just want out the car 😡😡. If they let me out the car I might go with the new GV80. I'm over it, second time at the dealer with only 3k miles

You’re going to go with a model that isn’t released yet? Could take a while to come out with how long the G70 took after the Korea launch:p what’s going on? I might have missed your OP about it but maybe some of us can help or provide advice

I having same issue as the OP but I'm guessing is more than just that. I'll wait for the dealership to tell me what it is and I'll take it from there. Don't want to deal with problems down the line don't have time or patience for it. Regarding GV80 I'll wait till spring or summer is worth waiting I really like what they did

first model year cars are always going to have issues/quirks to work out. The GV80 is hot but just know what youre getting into. In regards to your tranny issue, try to figure out if you can reproduce the shifts. Then ask the service manager to ride in the car with you while you reproduce, so they cant say they dont feel it. Ive noticed that I can consistently get a very hard shift. All it takes is a cold start, going 25 miles an hour and let it coast down a bit. The transmission will do a very hard shift and lurch slowing down. It gets better once the car is fully warmed but if you can show them while the car is cold no way will someone say they dont feel that

I can tell you right now the loaner I'm driving is silky smooth at cold start or warm. No hard shift when coasting down or double braking at a complete stop. I agree first model years come with small issue I can dig that but no major tranny or engine issue. I just want a swap. I'm not going any where lol I had two g80 and now the g70

The insides of an auto transmission I’m not familiar with. Always knew better to try to jack with one. Why when cold and maybe the trans fluid is maybe a tad bit thicker would that create the hard downshift? I always assumed these days newer cars rely on the ECM for shift points and such. 30 years ago everything was probably fluid controlled thru valves and internal clutches with little computer input. Today it’s probably the opposite.

These reports of hard shifts at cold temperatures make me wonder if there is a better transmission fluid available for our cars, perhaps a multi-grade fluid that performs more effectively at cold and warm temperatures. In my previous manual transmission cars using blended fluids made a huge difference to cold shifting performance, is this something that is possible in an automatic transmission?

The issues I had with my Stinger only happened when upshifting from third gear to fourth, and it was largely gone once the trans fully warmed up. Oddly enough, these abrupt shifts NEVER happen in sport mode, only the other modes, and if I manually shift, I never seemed to have it happen either. For an issue like that, I felt it was a programming glitch.

Every try to replace your ATF?

Just to be clear, the "double breaking" isn't exactly the transmission's fault. Who ever decided to code the car's shift points was just an idiot and it shifts down sooner than most would want. Maybe there's a reason behind it, but I think most would agree that you just have to get used to it and you'll adjust your braking behavior to compensate once you do.

Update to post #59. So finally I got my car back after 4 weeks at the the dealer. I need help I'm not too tech friendly so after driving around I noticed the suspension on the car is now a lot stiffer than what it was before I don't remember this car being that stiff. I had another g70 loaner but 2.0 and the suspension on that was super comfortable. So is it possible for the dealership to mess something up? Now they did end up fixing the issue or let me say is less pronounced now, very slightly which I could deal with the transmission jerking when shifting a low speed especially under 20 mph . They also end up replacing the electric steering rack and pinion and also did a wheel alignment because my steering wheel was tighter than normal which I still think is tight especially when you backing up to a parallel parking. Any input ? Why is my suspension so stiff now?

Does your vehicle have electronically controlled suspension when you change drive modes? That is the only way I know of to monkey with ride comfort vs stiffness. Lacking that it would take spring and strut changes to alter the ride.
