  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Mirror tap for radar detector

no, gen1 but I assume the wiring for Gen2 Valentine one to be the same... check with MirrorTap, it looks like it's the same wire

check out this URL for the correct tap that fits the G70 (and likely G80 and G90 as well). Note that it has an inline fuse vs a simple phone cable:

Has anyone tapped the power from the mirror to power a radar detector?
Hello, I have G90 and have had just connected my radar to mirror. It was extremally easy. I imagine this technique will apply to all G cars since I used wiring diagram which was shared on this post for G80

Steps:

  • Get your self RJ11 crystal and CAT5e or equivalent cable (you will need only two strands. I used Blue and Blue/White wires) and build your self-cable. You will use on RJ11 ping 2 and 3 (two middle pins. In my case Pin 2 = Blue/White (Ground). Pin 3 = Blue (Positive Ignition). You can also use telephone cable, cut one end, strop it and use two middle wires. One connected to pin 2 and one connected to pin 3.
  • Remove cover from mirror base. Very easy, I used a small hook and cover popped out
  • Remove cable connector from mirror base
  • Stirp Cat5e cables a bit so they can slide into cable housing. Blue/White cable slide to position 8 (black cable). Blue cable slide to position 6 (Pink cable).
  • Turn ignition on and you have radar powered by your mirror.

ah one more thing. car = 2020 Genesis G90

Hello,

I am getting ready to do this for G80. Any pictures or links will be super helpful. Here is my email parths@live.com

email with additional instructions have been send to you. enjoy

Thanks for the Information. Accurate and detailed. Installed in a jiffy. Creating room for new wire was tricky a bit but persistence paid off. And it looks like this.

How were you able to create the room needed for the extra wire? I had the hardest time, snapped three taps and wasn't able to get it to work.

I hear you... I started with a pin with thinnest point and pushed it in. Bigger pin next thereby making the space. Went thru 4 sizes to get big enough room to push the tap wires. Yeah it was pain. Goodluck

i think if you use home made tap wire like we did = two strands of copper wires taken out of CAT6 cable (computer patch cable) and install your own RJ11 connector on it so it plugs in to your radar detector. you can also use regular old fashion telephone cable, cut it in half and strip the ends. you will never need any extra room nor will you have difficulties tapping in to your existing harness. Two strands from CAT6 cable are so small they latterly slide in to mirror harness with out issues.
i personally did not use prefabricated cable that is suggested earlier in this post because i found it to be too expensive $45.00 for half of telephone cable essentially. i build it my self. one other member (Parthshah) did the same and took him no time to do this.
if you do it right it will take you 10 min and you will not damage anything, you dont have to force any thing.

Yes. Here is the wiring diagram.
Hey Kimkeys99 if you don't mind can you send a picture of you wiring, because I am trying to mirror tap for my R3 and I can't figure it out.

Hi all,
I just installed a MAXCam 360c using the mirror tap on my 2022 LE (this should work for all 2022+. May not be the same on the 19-21's).

Going to describe this as best I can and have attached an image to help. The proved pin locations are if you want your device to turn off when you turn off the ignition.

So once you take off the little plastic cover right above the mirror and unplug the harness, you're going to flip it over (you'll notice the image I attached is flipped as well). The ground tap (blk cable) goes into the top row middle (pin 8). The pwr tap (red cable) goes into the top right (pin 10). I verified these pin locations with a multimeter.

I recommend plugging in your device before putting it all back together to just to check that it works properly. Make sure your device turns off when you turn off you ignition. If you want constant power to your device even when the car is off you're going to have to use your own multimeter to check the voltage running to the cables when the car is off.

I used a "Mirror Tap MTX-1015" (image attached as well, even has a QR code that you can probably capture with your phone from the photo if you want to get the exact same one). I used the smallest tap connector for both the ground and the pwr. It's a pretty tight fit so it really has to be the smallest.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try and help out.

Otherwise if you plan on doing the wiring below which I will be doing for my Escort smartcord, you can tap into the OBD Connector wiring for ignition and ground.

OBD Ignition - Pin 3 / Blue/Orange
OBD Ground - Pin 4 / Black/Orange or Black

Not a cheap tap kit!
