  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

What is your biggest complaint about the Hyundai Genesis?

my biggest complaint is all the b/s negative comments I see posted on this forum about the nicest car I have ever owned. The ride is fine in my book,& believe me living in western pa. aka: [pot hole city] is not very user friendly.
so, my advice is to think positive & count your Savings. Merry Christmas to all.JNP

+1. As I said in an earlier post in this thread, my biggest complaint is that I waited so long to buy this great car.

My biggest complaint would have to be the clunky voice command interface. When entering a destination through voice command, it asks you for your state, then the city, street, number, etc. It digests your voice inputs at an almost annoyingly slow rate, and then asks for your confirmation.

A touch-screen navi (like the AWESOME system in the Genesis coupe), music-ripping capability, and smoother iPod functionality would be nice, too.

I'm curious to see what kind of improvements they make on the 5.0 (besides the souped-up powertrain, obviously).

My biggest complaint is the steering. Anyone else feel like you're fighting the front tires when you're doing 70mph on a big sweeping curve? Try this, get on a big sweeping curve doing 70mph and momentarily let go of the steering wheel. It snaps back to center immediately.

In comparison, my other car is a 2005 BMW 545i without Sport Suspension, and the steering on that car is absolutely perfect. As a matter of fact, that's why I bought the Bimmer. On the flip side, it's in the shop constantly and has had $11,000 in repairs (thank goodness for an extended warranty) since we've owned it (3yrs).

Will this aspect of the Genny change if I change the OEM tires?
WTF? The Genesis is not supposed to be taking big sweeping curves at 70mph. That's not really a steering problem moreso than you're asking way too much for a non-sports car, even moreso when comparing to the performance of a BMW (Sport package or not).

Memory steering problems. Several switches have been replaced in addition to an entire steering column and this still has not fixed the problem. Not very happy with Hyundai at the moment and Hyundai is scratching their heads since they don't know how to solve this problem!

Can you elaborate a bit more on this ? curious

After they replaced the swich for the steering memory, it worked fine for about a week and then started to "forget" its' memory position. They replaced the switch again, reset the memory position and it worked again for about another week and then crapped out again. Dealer was scatching his head and decided to replace the entire steering column. It worked for 3 days and then stopped just like the other two times! Hyundai has been contacted but it has been over 2 weeks and have not heard anything from them or the dealer. I am over 6 feet tall and the steering column always stays in a very low down position making it extremely difficult to enter and exit the vehicle. I am unable to manually raise the steering column with the switch on the side of the steering wheel as it only has about a 1" of travel in it before it stops. This process has gone on way too long since it takes 2-3 weeks each time a switch had to be ordered and over a month to wait for the steering column. To say I am frustrated and a little p*ssed off would be an understatement. I am about ready to dump the car and go back to another manufacturer. I love the car and would hate to get rid of it but it is really becoming PITA. I have had some other issues with the car but none compare to this one.

I have a 2009 3.8. The transmission is junk. I have it at the dealer now but I see that it won't do any good. I have a 2010 4.6 loaner and the transmission is smooth as silk. As I said I have a car with a defective transmission.

The cruise control is also sorry. I lose 3 MPH going up any grade hill, even a mole hill. After the car gets up to the set speed it goes over the set by 2-3 MPH. If I traveled on the highway a lot this car would be gone as I couldn't take the inconsistency of the cruise. The loaner also slows on a grade, but not like my 3.8. Since I have a 2002 I-35 and had a 96 Maxima, neither of which lost speed on a grade, I guess that Hyundai technology is lacking.

1. After several trips to the dealer they replaced my steering column after it froze but the memory function now fails only 1/3 of the time.
2. rear view camera stops working periodically. Never have had these problems with our Lexi.
3. Amazed that the ride and seats are the same in '11 as my '09. My '09 come of lease in 2 months and it would be bizarre to lease essentially the same car for another 3 years.

2010 Genesis 3.8 -- Overall a great car.

My only major complaint. The rattle-knock-rumble during mild acceleration under load. I have posted a movie on YouTube demonstrating this, and am still trying to get an answer from Hyundai (the dealerships simply shrug their shoulders and say it is "normal").

This noise has never been satisfactorily explained by anyone from Hyundai, and, in my opinion, demonstrates a fundamental area where Hyundai really needs to improve -- the technical knowledge of its service staff at the dealership level.

This point has been emphasized several times in these forums. One example will suffice. There is a "controversy" about how much oil should be added to an empty crankcase!!
One official source says 4.5q, the other says 5.5q. Adding to the mystery is that (a) nobody from Hyundai seems to know the answer, and (b) when the car arrives from the factory, the oil level is WAY above the full mark on the dipstick!! I know from experience that that is where the level is if you fill the crankcase with 5.5q, so that is my best guess for the correct amount. By why on earth should anyone have to guess on such a fundamental issue regarding any car?

Minor complaints. a. No folding rear seats, just a skinny pass-through. The car would be soooo much more useful if the seats folded down. b. The trunk lid design drips water into the trunk if you open it on a rainy day. c. Windshield wipers tend to scrunch and crunch a lot for a new car.

Windshield wipers tend to scrunch and crunch a lot for a new car.

Get some Valeo's. I tried OEM, Michelin Symphony and Rain-X. They all cleared the windshield satisfactorily but they were exceedingly noisy (big thump at the top of each sweep). Somebody here recommended Valeo's so I got a pair - they are not expensive, they clean well, and best of all - they are nearly silent.

I'm having excessive scrubbing sounds using the auto sensing wiper function and light rain -- Only 2K miles on the car now.

Does anyone know if these Valeo blades fit the 2011 model? Everywhere I check it indicates that they fit 2009 and 2010, but not 2011 -- Maybe it's just because 2011 is still too new to be in the database... (?)

I notice that Valeo's database seems to be about a year behind. I would bet that the 24"/20" blades will fit the 2011 model. Even if you should get a set and they don't fit (which I think is unlikely) you won't be out much $$.

My biggest complaint is that the car is just not fun to drive.....the car is very competent and don't get me wrong I do like it. But the steering, chassis dynamics and even the transmission conspire to make things less fun than they ought to be. My CTS was a lot of fun to drive, this less so. Before you ask why I got rid of the CTS its a long story I won't bother getting in to. But fun to drive quotient is my biggest complaint.

Oh, and the damn stereo losing the EQ presets every time I touch the volume after turning the stereo on for the first time. Hyundai says it is normal. Yeah, OK.

Sorry to hear the Genny isn't as much fun to drive. I can understand, coming of a CTS!
But the EQ settings should be the same setting every time you turn it on! I change my settings on occasion due to the variety of music sources I use, and my settings are exactly where I left them. You might want to double check with another dealer!

Anybody else have input for us??? That doesn't seem right.

The non-Tech package stereos have that EQ issue... at least the early models if I remember correctly. This is one of the few things that makes me glad I sprung for the Tech package... compared to the Tech package's problems with amp units & DIS knobs. As far as I know, Hyundai never fixed this EQ bug either for the early owners.

The electronic stuff varies considerably between model year and trim levels on the Genesis. That's why when somebody asks "how do I..." the usual response is "what year and stereo/nav package do you have in your car?" There's a dozen answers depending on what they have!

As for the "fun to drive" comments: I mostly agree. I'm used to much smaller 2-door hatchback/coupes like my Mitsu Starion. I needed a 4-door sedan for when the folks visit and to have one new car for the long drive to the folks. The other cars make the trip just fine... but mom fears my other cars (all old but low miles) are going to spontaneously disintegrate in the SoCal desert. The manual shift mode of the auto transmission just doesn't compare to a real stick-shift & clutch setup. I've thought about making steering wheel paddle shifters as a test - I'd always thought of those as gimmicks too but maybe they're better than what I've got right now. If the Genesis ZF transmission were more willing to downshift it would help a lot; it just does not want to join in the fun (thanks to its MPG goals) in automatic mode. Throttle response is also slow/lagged. I don't know if this is a physical limit of the drive-by-wire setup on the V8 engine or a programmed software response limit to improve emissions and/or MPG. That aftermarket gizmo that installs between the throttle pedal and computer might help... one day I'll have to try it. Somebody else on this forum has it and did think it made a significant difference.

One thing to try: different tires. The stock Dunlops are not particularly good at anything.

The EQ setting thing has been experienced by quite a few folks on this forum and has it's own thread in the electronics, bluetooth, stero part of this forum. It's a minor complaint but as long we are bringing them up that is one of mine.

Just bought a 2011 3.8 sedan, Premium/Navigation, and I'll say in certainty that my biggest letdown is the dealership and how they treat their customers. They are in my opinion too structured for the $14K car buyer, and when you put a $35k+ car buyer there he feels out of place.

Mike, double check whether this is actually happening every time you turn the radio on, or whether it is happening every time you start the car (which often coincides with starting the radio). In other words, start the car, set the EQ, turn off the radio, turn it back on (without stopping the engine) and see if the EQ has been lost. Sometimes, a defective battery (shorted plate) will start the car, but the voltage will drop to a point where you get memory loss in some functions (I once had a car that had this problem brand new, and it took the dealer a year to diagnose it. About half the time I started the car, it dumped the trip computer memory.).

This problem with Hyundai dealer service people telling customers "it's normal" with every problem that represents even a minor challenge is one that Hyundai is going to have to address quickly, or the huge gains they have made in recent years are going to collapse.

I drove Hondas, Nissans, and Buicks for about 20 years. Never once had a dealer claim that something that is obviously not normal was "normal-- they all do that." On the other hand, this seems to be the first reaction of a number of Hyundai service people. What bothers me more is the lack of intellectual curiosity. Good grief, I drive into the service department with a brand new car that is making a decidedly unluxurious knocking sound, in rhythm with the engine but irregular. Something is loose somewhere, or there is something decidedly "borderline" in the car's engineering. Yet nobody seems to know about it. Then, after hearing it, they say "They all do that -- more or less -- I think."
Fine, but "What is it?" They can't say, and yet after several weeks, they still can't say!! In other words, they do not care.

Now, if I owned a Hyundai dealership and a customer came in and my flagship product made a strange noise, I'd find out what that strange noise is. For sure. No doubt. 100% certain I would have that customer on the phone with an answer within a week.

Not only that, if I were involved in Hyundai at the corporate level, I'd have a factory rep scanning any forum such as this one EVERY DAY, so that I'd know what the customers are saying.
