2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 lower front timing cover replacement

Damm! This project has more drama than a day time soap opera. I'm so sorry man!
I have to add that the only real issue with this project has been centered around the lower front timing cover. The rest of the project have been pretty smooth. Engine disassembly is as easy it gets.

For some reason it is hard to get this lower front timing cover in one piece either new or used.

I have been looking at used 4.6 lower timing covers and they look the exact same as the 5.0 lower timing cover. I will still have to do a better comparison other than online pictures to say they are compatible, but they look like the same part or similar.

Interesting, I may be able to substitute the 4.6 lower timing cover for a 5.0 timing cover. The two V8 engine are very similar(4.6 and 5.0) in design and parts.

Pics of a used 4.6 lower timing cover. I may have found a solution to my lower timing chain cover problem that does not require me to pay over $600 for new cover at my local dealership, use a chipped used cover, or keeping waiting for a new cover to become available online and hope that it is shipped without damage. The used 4.6 covers are cheaper($130-140) and plentiful online for sale used in good shape.

I always thought the 5.0 were the 4.6 just bored out to 5L.

If so, hopefully they'll take a bit more care in shipping it...

I think that you are correct. The engines seem to be identical except for some minor changes here and there. It is like a Chevy LS 5.3 V8 compared to a LS 6.0 engine. Different engines, but many parts are interchangeable like the oil pan, front cover, valley, heads, etc..

It may be the same with the TAU 4.6 and 5.0 engines.

I am going to be real here. The front lower timing cover is a very complicated repair. The way the cover is mounted actually does require the upper oil pan to be removed. I can not properly install the front cover with RTV unless I drop the upper oil pan. Therefore, I will have to drop the sub-frame. I see why this a $3500-4000 job at the dealership. Darn, this is turning into a very time consuming repair job.:(

Well, I am in this far so I will get it done. Hopefully none of you will have to deal with a lower front timing cover repair.

Jeez... Turning out to be quite the "adventure".

There is a lot of useful information coming out of your repair. Thank you for your service sir!

This type of work is pretty common for many late model engines. The front timing cover and upper oil pans usually require the sub-frame be dropped on many makes from GM to BMW.

My main source of drama in this "adventure" is acquiring a front cover without any damage; new or used. The 5.0 engine in the Genesis do not have a large source of parts available outside the dealerships or online OEM part sellers.

Hopefully you do not have a front timing cover leak that will need to be repaired. If you are keeping your Genesis pass 100k miles then you may need to start saving for the repair now.

Thank you.

Hopefully this information will more useful as the engine ages and more DIY owners attempt to perform similar repairs on their 5.0 engines. The upper oil pan and front timing cover are going to leak eventually since they are sealed with RTV.

Heck, some owners may end up cracking their timing cover like I did on a simple oil or coolant sensor change.

I will be doing this method to drop my sub-frame to access and remove my upper oil pan to install the new lower timing cover. The only good in this is that my Genesis do not have power steering fluid lines to worry about.

The lower timing cover has been removed. It was tricky to get off due to a lip under the crankshaft.

I had to use a block of wood to hammer the top of the cover out until it would not go any farther due to the lip hitting the crankshaft and then I hammer it back a bit and then pried the cover form the bottom with a pry bar until it cleared the crankshaft and then pulled it off by hand. The RTV held on pretty good. The lower timing cover only had several 12mm bolt holding it in the front, (5) 10mm bolts on the bottom, a 12mm bolt in the back next to the coolant pipe in the valley area, and a 10mm coolant pipe support bolt next to the rear 12mm cover bolt.

Next will be the tough part. RTV and replacing all the gaskets.

The lower timing cover removed. The timing chain system looks good without any worn guides or loose chains.

Important!!!!

Do not remove you lower timing cover like this with the upper oil pan in place if you are going to reinstall it on the same engine. This method only works if you are just pulling the lower timing cover off an engine, because you will not be able to properly reinstall the cover and seal it with the upper oil pan already in place.

You need to drop the sub-frame and first remove the upper oil pan to properly perform this repair.

I take pause at something labeled "EASY!"... It's like a friend of mine that says "How hard can it be?" and 8-10 hours later....

Easy? I would not say that either about dropping a sub-frame. However, compared to removing the engine and transmission to do the same amount of work it would be considered easy in comparison.

The Genesis sub-frame removal appears to be the exact same process as that BMW more or less. The sub-frame is only held by(4) large bolts. The only component in the way is the power steering rack. The motor mounts in the Genesis do not need to be removed. The motor mounts only have one bolt on top that holds them to the mounting bracket attached to engine that allows the motor mounts to remain on the sub-frame when it drops. Nice design.

I will use a OTC brand engine brace instead of the Harbor Freight brand engine brace used in the video.

Nothing about this repair is easy for sure; but it is DIY friendly. Repairs like this require time and patience.

I have not given up. I am waiting for my engine brace(to support engine) and wide jack(to support sub-frame) to arrive by mail.

My wide jack for ATV,transfer-cases,etc has arrived early. I have been wanting one of these for a while to use it if I ever needed to drop my front differential or transfer-case in my SUV. Now I will use it to help lift my Genesis sub-frame.

I think the Genesis sub-frame weights about 60lbs; so it will need something that will be able to hoist it up when it comes to bolting it back on the car. I am strong, but not that strong to hold it up with one arm while trying to start the bolts.

The wide jack.

I’m interested to know your opinion of that jack after you’ve used it. I’ve been looking around for something like that for my motorcycle.

I will keep you posted.

My only issue so far with the jack is that it only has a 17in lift height. So I may have to use a lifting block to gain a bit more height to work with.

LOL. I guess this car is cursed. The OTC engine support shipment was cancelled by Amazon due to an issue in transit. The support is now unavailable until further notice.

Well ,that sucks because the Genesis engine bay is wide, so the typical engine support bars are not long enough for the Genesis engine bay. I need a 60in-62in long support bar, however most of the engine support bars are only 57-59in long.

I wanted the OTC bar because it was about 70in long, so it could have been used for my SUV also.

I ended buying an Omega Lift brand engine support 3-point bar that is 61in long.

Amazon response to my OTC bar shipment. WOW, it seems that this project will take forever to complete at this rate.
