  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

AC Issues in Rain

I would have assumed they checked the charge. They said they put gauges on it and it was fine. I am assuming the checked the drain. When it is melting after driving it water is dripping out. I live on the Texas coast so high humidity is our weather.

Temperatures and pressures will tell you if the charge is about right (assuming that the TXV is working correctly), but I think to tell if it is exactly right, you have to recover the refrigerant and then weight it back in.

I am having the same problem. after an hour or maybe more, the ac vents suddenly will only blow out at very low volume. I have made these observations..1) the fan motor is blowing at full speed. but air flow to the vents is not happening. 2) the air that does come out of vents is very cold. so the refridgerant is good. 3) when I stop the vehicle, I notice that there is no condensation dripping from under the vehicle. If however, I wait for 15 minutes, the condensation drips under the vehicle begin. once they begin, the ac air flow begins to work again. 4) if I turn off the ac while driving and just suffer the heat for awhile, then turn the ac back on, it will work again.
It is my belief that the system is freezing up and not allowing air to flow. is it freezing the coils? is it freezing a valve shut? I dont know the design of the system. I am arranging to go speak to the dealer in person and speak with the service dept and see what we can file officially.

Frost and ice are forming on the fins of the evaporator. The fins that the air blows through to cool the air off. This is why the air flow is being blocked. Below is a picture of a window AC's frozen evaporator. The shape of the car's evaporator is a little different, but it's the same thing that is happening.

The solution rests with the ability of the AC guy at the dealer. If he works on three a year he won't be as knowledgeable as the AC shop that does it all day long.

It's a 2019 AWD 3.3T Sport

Aggravating! Just did it again yesterday. Steady driving for about 3 hours (200 miles) and air won't come out of any of the vents, front and rear. Looked under the hood before I shut the car or system off. Not raining either.

Hey Genesis, help my Dealer fix this!

As has been pointed out you really need to know the pressures (low side and high side) at "rest" and with the engine running and ac on. Here's a link that may help you diagnose the problem - https://bit.ly/2UZkdGx .

Mine is a 2018 G80 3.3T AWD, Here is a picture from earlier this week. Still no response from Genesis Customer Care other than they say I have a case manager that I can't reach.20200616_100242.webp

I have another appointment July 6th to evaluate this problem again (been checked 2 times already, 2 Dealerships). When I made the appointment I asked that the Service Manager (Lou) contact Genesis Tech to explain the problem and see if Genesis had any resolution for this issue that appears to be happening to several G80 owners. He told me that for Dealer Service to request Tech Support the vehicle needed to be in the shop and connected to a computer for Genesis Tech to assist diagnose the problem. Apparently this wasn't done on the 2 previous attempts to find a solution, it was left up to the Mechanic to guess what needed to be done. I was able to get the Lou to query TSB's for AC Issues and he said there were no TSB's for the AC Systems.

Lou gave me the impression that he wasn't real happy with the level of support that Genesis provided the Service Department or the procedure he needed to follow to get help.

Let you guys know what happens.

Dealer had my car this time for a couple of days and didn't find any failed components. Genesis Tech did have them replace a Thermistor, although I didn't receive the Repair Order yet to identify the part. I'm going to guess it was in the Dash because the passenger seat was pushed back when I picked up the car.

I did run the car for a 2.5 hour trip (times 2) and didn't have any problem with the AC malfunctioning.

Probably the evaporator temperature sensor. This would be the correct part to suspect, since it's job is to tell the climate control when the evaporator is about to freeze up so that the climate control can turn the AC compressor off for a little while to let it thaw out some.

I was betting it was the evaporator temperature sensor or a stuck open evaporator valve, but I couldn't make it fit with why rain was often involved, so decided to keep my thoughts to myself. As the old saying goes "it's better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt".

Rain gives higher humidity and lower temperatures. Both make frosting and freezing of the evaporator more likely to happen if the low temperature limit isn't working. At least, this is what I have seen with other car brands...

Can you lat me know what dealer you used. I have an open case with Genesis and they acknowledge they have a problem but can't seem to find a solution. I was going to steer them to your dealer. My local dealer is useless.

Don’t fart around. Go to an AC specialist. Send your dealer the bill.

I agree
..love the car but exact same issue. Long trip car air sounds like a window is open and vent open flapping noice and hot. Hapoened so far 4 times and no answer. Just happened on long trip... hope when bring in fixable.
Well no luck and happens only on long trips. Car is a lease so this and sun roof creaking and thumping on turns never gets fixed. They will loose my business when lease ends in 5 months...may have to try a Lexus this time.

For the first time yesterday I had a coil freeze up. I started the day with high humidity and 73 degrees. About an hour later, I noticed it was not as comfy as usual and air low was reduced.

I tried all sorts of things while driving but nothing worked. Fan on high, system off, heat on, nothing did it. Finally, a 15 minute rest stop got it going and the outdoor temperature was in the 80s and it was ok since, It was a long ride, you'd never see it on a short commute.
