AC Issues in Rain

I have had the same air problem in my 2019 Genesis G80 Sport on three trips after about one hour in Florida but no rain involved. System is running at full throttle, but air is throttled. Last was a day ago traveling for an hour. I've tried all the suggestions mentioned above after the failure, but it does not recover while car is still active. However, it does recover after about an hour with car off. A temperature sensor has been replaced twice. My garage seems to be clueless. I will try setting the circulation to "Recirculate" prior to a trip this week. Thanks for that suggestion.

2018 G80 5.0 with 26k miles. Had same issue on a trip about 8 weeks ago to Dallas, TX and a 2nd time 3 weeks ago on trip to lake house. Both times were right at the 1 hour mark of driving, so I new it wasn't some random issue.

I dropped it off at the Genesis Plano Dealer to look at while in Dallas 8 weeks ago. They said it was some clogged air filters and a few leaves in the system. NOPE!

I have printed out the Post #61 with the Diagnostic to take to the dealer in San Antonio. Thank you for posting the information!

Maybe this can help you guys get the issue resolved.

Here's the Repair Order that seems to have fixed the issue on my 2019 G80. I've put about 2250 miles (a few sustained highway runs) since this repair and the AC has worked like a new car! Oh wait, it is a new car. :giggle:

Car has about 28K on the odometer now. Note that there is a Case Number listed as well as the part that was replaced.

Wanted to thank you again for your post. Took my genesis to a dealer in Orlando after experiencing a similar problem. They gave me the dreaded "couldn't replicate the problem" diagnosis. After reading your post and sample Work Order took it to our local service center in VA and they replaced the thermistor. Said that they contacted Genesis with the symptoms and their solution was to replace the thermistor. So looks like the Genesis folks are have added/recognized this problem officially. Thanks Again!!

Back to the coil freezing
Took my car in for oil change and recall this morning. Also took a copy of post 61 with all the information, part number etc. They check out the AC and as expected, everything works ok.

I was willing to pay for the part and reasonable labor, but they sait it involves taking the dash apert to get to it, very expensive. The service manager said they had other complaints and found it was caused by the auto defrost. They changed the setting to turn it off.

I won't be making a long enough trip to test this until sometime in September. Meantime, I'm rating it a definite "maybe".

Hope that change works, way better than having your dashed ripped out! :giggle:

I suggest that you first check whether the filter is clogged. This is one of the most common problems when the air conditioner breaks down. And it is also worth checking the outgoing air above the evaporator, this is also a fairly common defect. In general, I think it will not be difficult to fix, because the air conditioner is not the most difficult thing in the car. I had a similar problem with the home air conditioner. I've been racking my head for a long time, but it turned out that everything is very simple. Due to the poor location, the filter clogged and the freon liquid did not flow well, then I decided to replace the attachment devices. Now I am satisfied with his work. I hope I helped you, good luck!

All of this sounds like a problem with the A/C Evaporator Core. It might be that the A/C Evaporator Core gasket is damaged or improperly seated causing a refrigerant leak. When this happens it cause the A/C unit in the engine compartment to freeze up. When it thaws out A/C airflow will return to normal and A/C will cool as it should.

Here lies the problem, to check for a problem with an A/C Evaporator Gasket issue, the entire dash has to be removed almost down to bear metal to get to the A/C Evaporator Core and to do this is very costly, so much so that even under warranty a manufacture would have to be really convinced to warranty such a job, but unfortunately if nothing else can be found to resolve this issue someone just may have to check for an evaporator core gasket issue.

If there is frost that can be seen on the A/C unit this is a good indicator that the unit is freezing up and is a good flag to check the A/C evaporator core for a gasket issue. Yes, there are usually signs if there is a refrigerant leak inside the car, but in rare case not.

Another thing is when you have this issue it make no difference where you set the inside temp the temp inside the car is just not going to get any cooler and air flow from the vents will be restricted. The rain thing may be coincidental, but for the most part if there is a Evaporator Core Gasket issue, the problem will occur rain or shine, but there is always that one thing that works outside the norm.

Good Luck!

I'll start by stating that I love my 2018 Genesis G80 Sport! One of best cars I've ever owned with one exception.

This is probably the strangest (and most annoying car issue I've ever experienced). It's happened 3 times in the past year, so I've pretty much figured out when it will happen, but with 3 trips to the dealership, they have yet to come up with a solution.
I posted about this last year when it first happened and have video evidence of the issue. Despite calls to the corporate engineers, (they are currently looking at the issue, but so far no solution and I can't believe I'm the only one having this issue.

My car is normally garaged and the AC works fine. However, on two long road trips, after the car sat outside in the rain for a weekend while travelling, the AC will work normally until about an hour into the drive, and then something (a flap, a baffle, main AC vent, or something) freezes up and almost NO air gets into the cabin. As stated previously, you can hear the fan roaring somewhere deep in the bowels of the car, BUT NO AIR IN CABIN. The last time (3rd time) it happened, I had driven from my home and all was fine. It began to lightly ran and, in the course of an hour, the AC simply stopped delivering air into the cabin!

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. Love the car, but don't want a car that I can't drive in rain or summer. I'm no AC expert, but surely someone out there can at least figure out this cause. The morning after each event, there is a ton of water on the garage floor (much more than normal) which would again indicated something in the system massively froze up. Of course, by the time it gets to a dealer, it's working just fine and they can't recreate. Thankfully video shows the issue. Genesis corporate engineers are working on it...just wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
We have been experiencing this issue for over a year now. We took it into the dealer and thought they had it fixed. Due to COVID we haven’t taken any long road trips in our 2018 G80 sport until this last weekend. Well it happened again so the fix didn’t work apparently. They can’t get the car back in until 8/26. Guess we will see what they come up with. Glad we bought the extended warranty. Did you ever get an answer or resolve?

Happened to me on a 14hr drive to FL this summer. I took it to a dealer and of course they couldn't replicate the problem so nothing was done. Happened again on the return trip. There is a thread on this forum about a solution along with a copy of a mechanics report. The unit is freezing up. Tempory solution is to shut down the AC for a bit until it thaws then turn it back on and repeat as needed. THE PERMANENT solution (so far) is to replace the AC system's THERMISTER as stated in this thread mentioned above. Hope you have better luck with Genesis Warranty Support than I have had so far. In 50 years of owning new cars it's the absolute worst I've ever encountered.

This is exactly what is happening. I'm in Florida, high heat high humidty.

Not new Genesis issue. I had exactly the same problem on long road trips to FL. There is a thread 391503 on this forum that includes a scan of a work order to replace the AC's THERMISTER to keep it from freezing up in rain and high humidity. Showed the WO to my dealer and they replaced it in my 2018 G80 and so far it seems to have solved the problem.

I have a 2018 G80 as well and they gave me that take dash off response as well, but I pressed the Service Manager and then they looked it up and said they could get in through behind the glove box. Which they did. Might want to call Genesis Customer Care to verify if yours is the same.

UPDATE: Got the thermistor replaced and has worked fine for over 4 months now. Many longer trips taken without issue.

After an ongoing discussion about the AC coil freezing I spend most of the day at Gettel Genesis today. Two people looked and checked and ran the AC for a couple of hours. I told them that would not do it and of course, no, it did not freeze. The service manager told me they did replace a thermistor last week and the guy is back with the same problem. Considering the number of issues here I wonder of they got another bad one off the shelf.

They did call Genesis tech support but the only reply was, if you cannot duplicate it you cannot replace parts.

Looks like my solution is to get up early one morning, take a 200 mile ride and show up at the service center with a frozen coil. I will also be calling and opening up a complaint. This is no fun on a long trip.

I would call Genesis customer support directly. I got a little pushback, but I own 2 Hyundai Genesis and the 2018 G80, so the service manager knows me from bringing my other cars in for servicing. He started to lean towards the if we can't replicate it deal, but I explained I already had the vehicle in at the Genesis Dealer in Plano, TX while on a trip and it started.

It's a $15 part and accessing it on the 2018 G80 is from the glove box, so the entire dash does not need to be removed, btw.

All Genesis needs to do is take care of their advocates and keep us happy. There is strength in numbers...

If you call and don't get anywhere, I would be happy to call Genesis myself on your behalf and explain this is crappy customer support... fix it.

I'm guessing others on here that have experienced this same issue would be more than happy to make a call into Genesis customer support as well.

Cheers Ed!

I'm dreading dealing with the dealer on this as it is hard to duplicate the problem. I rarely drive more than 1 hour in my 2018 G80 3.3T Sport. August 2021 I took a 500 mile/8 hour trip with A/C running the entire time. After about 3 hours A/C airflow was reduced and air was warm/not cool. Turning off the A/C for 5 minutes and then back on resolved the issue for about 15 minutes and then issue reoccurred.

Anybody have details on how to replace this thermistor (part number, diagrams, instruction video, etc.). I can "turn a wrench" and would prefer fixing myself versus dealing with stealership.

I had the same issue. I gave my dealer permission to take my 2018 G80 AWD Ultimate on a 1 hour plus drive. They did and the issue with the AC was duplicated. They replaced the thermistor took the car on another hour plus drive and the issue duplicated itself again. Had the thermistor replaced again. It was driven again with no issue. AC worked fine. Previous two thermistors were sent to GENESIS engineering and deemed faulty. By the way there was no charge to me at all. This was all under warranty.
