Aftermarket Subs in Genesis?

I added one 12" sub and a 750 watt amp to power it. The only drawback to this was that I had to remove the 8" sub in the rear deck to be able to hear the new sub in the trunk. Now I have all the bass I need, I don't have to turn the volume up as loud or the bass as high, and I can listen as loud as I want without the amp cutting out when it gets too hot. This suits my taste. If you don't like to listen at higher volumes with a lot of bass there is no point to this modification for you. For me it was well worth it.

Would you mind posting pics? Also what amp and sub did you use?

Well, it was time to replace my 10 year old Jensen amp, so I just puchased the following amp a couple of minutes ago. Wow, the prices of amps have dropped so much in the last decade. Out the door with shipping (Amazon) for $153. Best Buy wanted $200 plus tax. My friend has this amp and it's excellent. 500W RMS is a lot of CLEAN power.

I finally installed a 12" JL sub with a JL 500W amp. It has made a great stock system sound amazing. I don't care what kind of music you listen to, it's incredible.

I will post some pictures later this week.

Please do! This is the same set-up I'm considering.

I'm going to use a couple of shallow mount subs from Stereo Integrity that are receiving some early praise. If anyone is interested, there is currently a pre-sale/group buy that runs through January. They are selling for $175 + shipping each.

Pre-sale info

Subwoofer info

Also, just so we are clear I am not affiliated with Stereo Integrity in anyway. I just think some people may be interested in a high-performing shallow mount driver at a good price.

my friend hooked up my system and he ran a remote through the side pannels hooked it up to a fuse on the passenger side. dont really want a kill switch, if its too loud, its too bad. i got x2 15: cerwin vega subs running on a rocksford fosgate 1200w amp.

just need to re-cone my left sub. also got me some mudguards and window visors as you can see in the picture

Sorry I haven't posted a picture. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to mount the box (keep it from moving around). There's not much to work with.

I made another change. I removed the JL sub from the box and put in an Infinity reference sub (cost me $80 on ebay) and it's waaaaay better. The JL sub was about an 8/10 and it's now a 10.

Once I figure out how to mount the box, I'll post a picture. Any ideas are gladly welcome.

I just used an adjustable bungee cord and used the factory trunk net hooks, and now the subs do not slide at all:) Try something like this, they are like $5 at Target.

I also have a JL Audo 12 inch subwoofer and a 750 watt amp. I'm using the cargo net to hold the sub box in place. It's not perfect but does a fairly good job, and prevents me from having to drill into anything.

I put my new sub in a few weeks ago. A huge difference in terms of quality vs. the two 10" MTX subs I had.

I am using a Square 12" Kicker, and it's amazing how much clearer the sound is vs previous subs I've used.

Bonus: I have much more trunk room since I rid the huge dual-enclosure box for the 10's:)

Dual Voice Coils in this sub, which now days is pretty standard from what I hear, but my old MTX's subs were not dual voice coil.

Sorry for poor picture quality, I used my cell phone.

Nice sub. Is that a California Car Duster off to the side?

If so, how do you like it? I just bought one and its in the mail.

Ah, why yes it is the California Car Duster:cool: Works like a charm, and I've been using this product for 10 years or so.

Works wonders on black (and a must), and I don't wash my car often, but the Genesis is only used for pleasure since I don't drive it to work or in the winter.

Def. a great purchase. As the directions will tell you when you receive it, there is a small amount of waxy substance on the duster and maybe a little bit noticable on the cars finish, but goes away after only a couple of uses.

Just as the product says, "the dirtier it gets, the better it works" Totally true.

Nice setup.
I was playing with the idea of somehow using the stock sub location to mount an aftermarket sub.
I remember you mentioning that the rear pass-through door had to be left open to make the bass travel through.
If I could remove the stock sub, and somehow mount it around that area and make a custom fiberglass enclosure that fits under the the trunk liner, it would be real nice.

I could just leave the stock sub out for a passage for the bass to travel through, but I'm afraid of the road noise traveling through the trunk area at the same time.

Something to consider when purchasing a sub is the type and size of the box used for the sub. I prefer a sealed box, because of the tighter sound, but also because it's more versatile with all music. A ported box is great for R&B/Rap, but I like many types of music (mostly Rock/Metal) which sounds better with a sealed box.

Also, a sub requires a box with a specific air volume to make the best match and to receive the highest sound quality.

Below is an example of a 10" square Kicker:

10" subwoofer with dual 2-ohm voice coils
square SoloKon™ polypropylene cone with Santoprene rubber surround
power range: 50-450 watts RMS (225 watts per voice coil)
peak power: 900 watts
frequency response: 24-100 Hz
sensitivity: 86.3 dB
mounting depth: 6-3/16"
sealed box volume: 0.66-1.0 cubic feet
ported box volume: 1.25-2.25 cu. ft.

I think your idea of a custom box is great and may make a perfect setup, and I think this is something you could find out talking with a car audio shop.

I think a a custom box would be very expensive, but it could have a nicer appearence vs other setups.

Let me know what you end up doing:)

I ended up going with a 12" infinity sub with an enclosed box. I replaced the JL sub I originally put in. I have a 500W clean JL amp and the sound quality of the entire system is AMAZING!

To keep the box in place I tried using industrial velcro but when it ended up folding the rubber mat as I accelerated (e.g., the sub still flipped over). My simple fix was to wedge a piece of foam in between the sub and the top where the old sub is and that has worked like a charm.

Two comments:

1) Forget about replacing the stock sub with a new one in the same spot. You need to get something bigger to notice a big difference
2) You should NOT have to open the rear arm rest to hear the sub!! With mine closed, it's enough (if you want it to be) to get a free message!!

For what it's worth, if you are into music put a sub in, you wont regret it and for <$500 you can make a huge difference.

Thanks for the detail, Scott.
I also prefer sealed setup for the same reason, plus it's easier to build. :)
I'm thinking of going with a SQ sub that's not too expensive.
Possibly a Boston G5 if I can find a new one for a decent price.

As far as building an enclosure, I would most likely build it myself.
I like working on my own projects as a hobby, and I ended up building a fiberglass enclosure for my Corvette last year.
However, it's a little more tricky with the Genesis, since I have to somehow mount it under the shelf, as I'm thinking of a design that mounts underneath with the sub firing upwards (as in replacing the stock sub).
I wonder if the rear cross member is designed to endure that much of a weight.

Anyway, it'll be an interesting project. :)

Ed,
Glad you like your setup. I wish I can get a chance to listen to a setup like this.
Regarding your comment #1, I'm not planning on replacing just the sub to put it in the same location.
I'll be using a 10" or 12" sub placed underneath the stock sub location, but plan on removing the stock sub to let the bass channel through.
But if the sub can be heard no problem with the arm rest folded, then I guess I don't really need to remove the stock one.
I wonder if the stock subwoofer(disconnected) can work as a radiator for a bigger sub in the trunk. :)

Anyway, I gotta remove those panels and liners in the trunk to get a better idea of how I'm going to tackle this project.
Can't wait! :)

Dan

You will love it. I have tinkered with car stereos my entire life and have to say that once I added the 12" sub, this is one if the best systems I've ever had.

Good luck!!
