Aftermarket Subs in Genesis?

Dan

You will love it. I have tinkered with car stereos my entire life and have to say that once I added the 12" sub, this is one if the best systems I've ever had.

Good luck!!

Ed

I agree it's one of the best sounding systems. The ELS system in the Acura TL was superb as well.

I have a crappy 10" sub I have lying around(Alpine type-R), and still debating whether I should try this on the car or not.
I'm afraid of ruining the whole balance of the system.

BTW, when you tapped into the stock sub's lines, was the polarity of the wires pretty clear?
If not, which ones which?

Dan

Ed,
Glad you like your setup. I wish I can get a chance to listen to a setup like this.
Regarding your comment #1, I'm not planning on replacing just the sub to put it in the same location.
I'll be using a 10" or 12" sub placed underneath the stock sub location, but plan on removing the stock sub to let the bass channel through.
But if the sub can be heard no problem with the arm rest folded, then I guess I don't really need to remove the stock one.
I wonder if the stock subwoofer(disconnected) can work as a radiator for a bigger sub in the trunk. :)

Anyway, I gotta remove those panels and liners in the trunk to get a better idea of how I'm going to tackle this project.
Can't wait! :)

Dan

I get what you're saying about the stock sub removed in order for the bass to travel. My friend talls me to do the same thing, but after having my sub in now for and getting some time behing the wheel to listen to it, I actually think I would have been better off with the same sub I bought, but the 10" inch one. The twelve is great, but I think the 10" sub and box would fit underneath the rear deck. My current one does not, and also the bass can be WOW! Seriously. So the 10 inch would be great. I'll just turn down the GAIN on the amp, and that will tone it down to perfection.

Don't need to armrest down in order to hear it!

Thanks for the feedback.
I guess I'll try out my 10" sub and see how I like it.

Was it easy to verify the polarity of the stock sub wire?

Dan

So nobody has tried swapping out the stock 8incher for a higher powered one? I don't need the sub to rock my world, I just want the punch that the stock sub is lacking. I think I'm going to have to try this if nobody else has. Picking an 8" sub that is meant for an IB install will be the hardest part. I have the amp already.

First, there would be no direct replacement sub for the Lexicon system.
I have added a 10" sub and a small amp to see how I like the added bass without tearing out the stock system.
Still playing with the gain and whatnot on the amp to make it blend in with the system.

Thanks for the pics!

What makes you say this? If the stock woofer is an 8", why couldn't I replace it with a sub designed for an infinite baffle install? If the stock subwoofer is not a standard size, then it depends on what would have to be done to make a standard size sub fit. Or am I missing something? I'm not talking about just sticking in a new sub, I'm talking about amping the replacement just like you would with any after-market sub.

key word: direct replacement

My apologies if I wasn't clear.
I meant there's no aftermarket sub that's simple bolt-on replacement for the stock Lexicon sub.
You're gonna have to do some custom installation which might involve drilling or cutting or both to make an aftermarket sub fit in the stock location.
Most of us decided not to tamper with the stock sub placement which could be irreversible, and go the easier route by just adding an additional sub in the trunk.

I'm tempted to put something like a 8W7 in the stock location powered with a decent amp, but not sure if the W7 is ideal for an IB setup.

Just to be clear, you are saying the Lexicon sub is not a standard size, correct?

It is an 8" sub, but the mounting bracket has bolts that makes it not interchangeable with other aftermarket subs.
You can always retro-fit it though. Anything's possible with custom installation. :)

I'll have to open it up and take a look at it. I did a pretty in-depth install on my Tahoe...I'd like to keep it a bit simpler this time.

Nice installation on the Tahoe!
How do you like the G5?
I've been wanting to get one, but I think they're all gone nowadays.
Should've bought one when crutchfield was doing a clearance on them. :(

Removing the trunk liner that covers the rear deck speakers are easy, but wasn't able to figure out how to remove the deck cover(w/ the speaker grills) without looking at a shop manual.

The G5 met my expectations for it. It can certainly handle much more power than I give it normally. When I first installed it I turned the gain on my amp all the way down, then turned the car on. I thought a bomb went off until I realized I turned the gain all the way up. The amp was facing away from me, so I turned it to the left...idiot...

I glanced at the rear deck last night and came to the same conclusion about the rear deck. I'm suspicious that the seats may need to come out to get to it...(cough...TJPark.../cough) :D. If that is the case, I may just stick with a small box in the trunk like you. It isn't like our trunks are wanting for space... This route will be harder to go due to the WAF...

Once you remove the rear seat back, you'll see 3 bolts that hold the rear deck in place.
I removed those but still was fastened with something else from the sides and the back.
Didn't feel like applying excessive force before knowing what's underneath.

So a buddy of mine has an older Bazooka amplified subwoofer part of the EL series. It is a 8" or 10" I forgot to look and was wondering if this was something that can be hooked up to the Genesis. From what I understand, he had this hooked up direct to his aftermarket head unit in his old car with wires running all the way back to the trunk. I obviously would want to avoid this type of install.

Because this Bazooka is already preamp how would one go about installing it in the Genesis? I'll be honest, the last time I did any aftermarkt radio work it was 12 years ago... but I really think the Genesis could use some extra bass.

Any information to help would be greatly appreciated.... oh yeah, the only reason why I'm even considering this Bazooka is because it's free!!!!

So after reading all of the subwoofer threads I've almost cleaned out the cobwebs upstairs (in my head) and remember a thing or two about installing them. The only question I have for you "sub installers" is where/what/how are the Inputs coming from? Good 'ol aftermarket head units have the RCA outputs ready to go, but I'm not going to attempt to take the head unit off on the Genesis. So where did you tap from?

Also, has anyone used an "add a fuse" from the fuse box (ACC) in place of the "remote"/Blue wire? If so, was it hard running the line all the way back to the trunk? If you didn't do it this way, did you tap into one of the amp wires?

I guess my biggest  is the input lines into the amp. Where are they coming from?

I tapped mine from the stock sub, which is speaker level of course.
My amp has a speaker level input, so I just used that.
If yours don't have the input, you can always get a converter(speaker level to line level) and use that.
Sure it's not ideal from a sound quality standpoint, but it was easy to tap to.

For the remote wire, many of us used the passenger's side fuse box and tapped from there.
I believe I used external power output fuse. Didn't have those add-a-fuse handy, so I just tied it to one leg of the fuse and clipped it back in! simple as that.

Running the wire all the way back to the trunk was pretty easy.
below the 'genesis' plates and to the rear seats and through the rear seat pass-through.

Hope everything works out for you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the follow up Dan. At this point, I'm actually thinking of buying a new setup because most of what I need is cheap these days... My buddys bazooka is like 10 years old and who knows if it even works or sounds good anymore. Walmart has a Sony Xplod 10" 1100 Watt sub for $47 and I'll get a cheap amp for like $60. I'll use 4 or 6 gauge wire just in case I decide to upgrade in the future.

So when you say you used the sub speaker wire, did you disconnect the factory sub and use those wires, or did you tap into the wires so the factory sub still works?

No wiring diagram for the amp/speakers? Just double checking on that...:o

Good idea to get a newer equipment if it can be had for cheap.
Although some collectors prefer the old school amps, newer products are generally more compact and efficient.

BTW, I left the stock sub and just tapped into the wires.
Stock sub for the tech package is a DVC sub, so I tapped both +/- wires to feed it to my amp.
Wires were green and black. I assumed the black was negative and wired it that way. However, I had to switch phase on the aftermarket sub to make it sound right.

Good luck with your install and feel free to post or PM me with any questions you might have.

Well I ended up purchasing a couple items from Walmart.com
(Granted this is all bottom of the barrel stuff, but if it works to my liking I'm scoring HUGE in the $$$ department)

Sony Xplod XS-GTX110LW 10" Car Subwoofer $47

Autotek Street Machine 250 Watts x 2 Car Amplifier, AT1000 $58
(This was $199 at some point)

Scosche 680W 8-Gauge Wiring Kit for Single Amps $25

All done with tax was $140... Not bad. All I need to do now is make a box or buy one for $30... I think I have some 3/4" plywood lying around somewhere. If it isn't warped and nasty I'll make a box.

Funny how things come full circle... I remember doing all this back in high school!

I love that moment when I have all the equipments I need for installation, lay it down on the living room, and are about to start the installation. :D

I probably do this kind of install every time I buy a new car. It's fun.. and satisfying.
Hope you enjoy your install as much as I did.
