  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Reading this thread will certainly give you the flavor of this issue. 18 pages worth. It appears that some of our cars with sunroofs (non sunroof cars have been too few posting here to verify) develop this issue and one owner had his entire headliner replaced and the issue returned in short order. It is also mentioned in Kia Stinger forums (similar manufacturing processes):
Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof
It is a persistent and common fault with either no known solution or many solutions depending how you read the posts. Some learn to ignore it, some undertake DIY fix. All I can say is read these posts to learn from the extensive experience. You have a great deal of company.

I would also say that there seemed to be two distinct issues/sounds. Some have a rattling sound that is not temperature dependant, but possibly depends on sunroof position.
Then there are those of us that have more of a popping/crackling sound that definitely is heat dependant, and may not change with sunroof position.

The source could very well be the same. It's possible that some hear the sound as a "rattling', while others hear the sound as "crackling/popping".

If I recall, I thought the consensus (after 19 pages!) was that one group of owners - myself included - experienced a sound with a clear dependency on outside temp (had to be about 80 or higher), while the other group did not feel there was a temp dependency. I believe this latter group also described it as a rattle, rather than a popping sound.
I realize the description of the sound is somewhat subjective, but the temp dependency isn't. I could certainly be wrong, but this seems like two different issues to me.

Take a gander in YouTube for "stinger sunroof rattle" and you'll find a lot of videos. No fixes in any, but you start to notice most of them make noise to a similar harmonic frequency, hence might be caused by the same source.

In the Stinger forum there is a new thread for a "fix." I was hesitant to post here too early but it's such a simple thing to try it's worth a shot. I cant comment since it's been very cold here lately and the roof has been near silent. Check out a thread in the Stinger Forum for "Sunroof rattle fix". It's basically tape or foam on the front edge of the rails the glass travels on where it "parks" in the front.

Also, a dealer salesman reports that a tire shine gel like Meguairs High Endurance Tire Gel works wonders for seal related noises in the sunroof for a good month or two. I'm trying that now.

Good luck, let us know.

My issue is the suede panel and a slight intermittent ticking sound. If I put my finger in space in space between that panel and sun roof, it stops.

Thanks for the info! I tried a fix similar to what they posted in the Stinger forums and I think it may have solved my issue but then again the weather did cool down, so only time will tell.

Awesome, that issue seems like such a plausible source of noise...metallic things jiggling against each other on uneven surfaces are bound to make noise.

I too cannot comment whether this fixes anything probably until spring. I've already braced myself, winter is practically here.

I can comment that using a tire gel on the seals on the sunroof seems to have gotten rid of the ticking noises I was getting from them when the sunroof wasn't making the usual popping. I used one of those little foam painting brushes to apply it to all the seals, way better than trying to jam my fingers into all the nooks and crannies trying to get all surfaces of the seals lubed.

Sorry I have been silent as work, vacation, and frustration reigns on with this popping issue. After having my headliner replaced, I noticed some shop grime staining on some panels and my passenger seat belt. My grab handles in the back seat pull away from the roof it feels (not sure if it's normal yet). But my rattling persists. And my drama with getting it fixed also persists.
After waiting another month to hear from my repair shop. I finally called the corporate consumer line and started a case, pushing to have my issue escalated. I've been without my car for almost a month during all these repairs and am begging them to either buy it back or repair is asap. I'm currently stuck in a base model G70, while paying for a loaded US Design Edition effectively. Not happy.

My escalation was denied the other day because the car was in my possession, so I had to take it back in yesterday and get this loaner. Going back and forth with them, they are collecting all the data regarding my car and having an engineer contact my dealership's shop. At this point. I'm pushing for a buy-back and may step back from getting another one at this time. It's put a sour taste in my mouth. I hope to have an answer this week. I pray for everyone's sanity that has this issue. Especially if you have the cream color headliner like me! Black shop grime is your worst enemy!

Best of luck to you. How frustrating.

@Tdefrees, any update from your Genesis regarding your new case?

I took my G70 Sport out two days ago (45-50 degrees) and....heard the rattling. As far as my case, heat doesn't appear to be the catalyst. I still won't take it in. At least until a resolution appears. So I'll continue to monitor this thread.

Is yours a headliner or sunroof issue? I had the sunroof rattle, so I tried a similar fix to what they did in the Stinger forums and I no longer hear any rattles.

This thread is pretty much about the headliner rattle, although the location of the rattle is often at or near the sunroof. I'm not familiar with the "sunroof rattle" nor the Stinger sunroof rattle fix that you mention.

I wasn't sure about cross linking forums here, but it sounds like it's allowed.

General sunroof noises thread:

Sunroof rattle fix thread:

I don't doubt the possibility that some of the Genesis owners have noises coming from the headliner, but I suggest not eliminating the possibility of the noises being from the sunroof. The sunroof has a lot of mechanical and moving parts and is a highly likely source of noises. In new cars which have rather quiet interiors isolated from outside noises, it's hard to locate the true origin of an unwanted noises, it tends to sound like here or there.

Going back and forth. Gave it to them Monday, still now answer. In a base model G70 for now and not thrilled. The only thing to replace next is the entire sunroof assembly. I doubt it is that. I personally believe there is a design flaw of the headliner that is leading to something rubbing together and causing the "popping" sound. This come after looking at everything inside with the headliner out of the car. Out shopping for a replacement ride today in preparation.

Finally determined that my "ticking" issue is due to clearance of the bottom left from just beneath the glass of the sunroof. Thinking small piece of felt may remedy the problem.
