Apple CarPlay and Android Auto NOT coming to Ultimate Genesis (2015, 2016)

DH is just an internal Hyundai designation for the Genesis model. PE is the product enhancement model which is for 2017 MY. As G80 was introduced, although it looks pretty identical to the 2015/2016 Genesis, internally there were some enhancements and this was one of them.... If you are desperate for Apple Carplay, perhaps DIS stack can be upgraded-replaced at your own cost once the parts are available at the dealers but I am not 100% sure on that. The dimensions of the display is identical as previous model. Anyway, my information came directly from my contacts at Hyundai engineering team which is responsible for the development of the part. So I would trust that more than what a dealer is saying. Although the optimist in me still hopes the dealer is right....

They paid for my map upgrade and offered 3 years of Google guidance package. Would much rather have CarPlay, but at least it's something.

Hello all, new to this forum.

So I have a question/experience to share regarding the Ultimate and lack of CarPlay.

For 2 years, I've been really wanting to get a new car, but was holing off buying any new car until the car I liked had Apple CarPlay (ACP?). I passed up a lot of nice cars that I liked, at good deals, because they didn't have CarPlay thinking I'll wait till I like a car that has it.

I always thought the Genesis was nice, and liked Hyundai since I was driving a Sonata, but always kept it off my list since it didn't have CarPlay.

Then I heard about the update, and checked the master list of cars with ACP on the Apple website, and was excited to see that the 2015/16 Genesis showed as supporting ACP. It says NOTHING about different trims not offering it. (Still shows this).

So this past Sunday (4 days ago) I went to the local Hyundai dealership, to see what kind of deals they're giving on the last 2016 Hyundai Genesis they have in stock, as well as what they'd give me on my trade in.

I specifically told the salesman that I held off on the Genesis and was considering other cars, because ACP was a major deal breaking feature for me. (I was given a great offer on the 2016 Maxima Platinum but declined and decided to check out the 2017's even though the lease deals were not nearly as good. I had also started negotiating prices on the 2017 A4). We talked about how much I love Apple stuff. I have the watch. I have the new iPhone 7. Etc etc.

The last Genesis they had in stock was an Ultimate, demo, which they were giving a great deal on. During the test drive, I asked if this car had the ACP update installed yet, and salesman said no, not yet, you have to sign up for BlueLink first, when you get home, you download it and you will have it. Cool I thought.

So I bought the car on the premise it has ACP. I don't think I would have even test drove it if I knew the Ultimates can't get ACP.

Only 2 days later when I tried to download the update did I find no updates on my BlueLink page, and after searching online, found this forum and other less obvious sources demonstrating that only Ultimates can't get ACP.

So obviously, I was pretty furious at the deceit and disappointed. Because otherwise, I LOVE this car! I almost thought it was too good to be true to get a car I liked this much, at a great price, with the one feature I've looked forward to for almost 2 years.

So I haven't spoken to the salesman yet, because he was off yesterday, but I'm really torn with what to do. On the one hand, I feel I was deliberately lied to (this is different than being promised an update later down the road - I was told the car I was buying supported ACP THAT DAY. All the while, he knew how important ACP was to me. And at no point did he take a minute to correct me that in fact the car I was test driving did not have this ability, and I should look for a signature/tech model instead (which did not have in stock).

So I ask all of you, half for advice, half just to vent.
I'm not sure what to do. I've had a few ideas.

1 - I actually think if I want to fight this, I have legal ground to take the car back and cancel the sale (it's been < 4 days, and was purchased based on false information). But at best, this would not be an easy process. They do not have any stock left of the 2016, and even if I wanted to pay premium price for the 2017 G80, they only have Ultimates in stock, which wouldn't help things.
However, other local dealers have a couple 2016 signature models left which I thought about test driving before buying this. Again, had I known about the ACP limitation of the Ultimates, I would have just gone straight to those dealers.

2- After having the car for a few days, I actually rather like the stock Nav DIS system. It's got clear images, and live traffic updates through XM Traffic (which is better than I thought it would be, much better than it was on my 2013 Sonata). And I especially like having with the HUD. I know the ACP wouldn't support that feature. I am learning about the Siri hands free features, and I know I can play my music w/ streaming or connecting the phone w/ USB, and can even use Pandora (which ACP doesn't support, I believe). So I'm trying to convince myself that despite 2 years of solidly focusing on having ACP, maybe it's not that big of deal anyway.

3 - I did lease it, so maybe I can see if they can arrange to transfer me out of this one and into one of the 2017 late model G80's at a good price which I've read here may have ACP in the Ultimates?

4- Lastly is probably the most realistic outcome, which is maybe I can get them to pay for the Connectivity BlueLink for the term of the lease, and pay for my map updates.

After thinking this over, and reading some of the other posts on the somewhat limited benefit of ACP, I think ultimately I'd probably be ok with option 4, but I wanted to reach out for any other suggestions/feedback? Should I fight this? If so, to what degree? Just makes me mad that there are dozens of cars out there I would have considered but turned down due to lack of ACP, then I unknowingly go out and buy a car w/ out it.
Anyone with ACP in their Genesis think it is a game changer for them? That would be worth giving up the features of the Ultimate if I even have that option?

Thanks everyone, and sorry for the very long post, especially since it's my first one.

Hello ijano,

I totally understand your frustration. On the lease deal, here is what I think will happen to you.

Unless the contract you have with the dealership and the financing institution specifically mentions that the car will be equipped with ACP, you won't have an easy time getting out of the deal based on a promise by the sales person.

In my experience, car sales people are often absolutely clueless (there are exceptions) - I have experienced that multiple times while car shopping for myself and for friends. I know more about cars I am interested in than any sales person I have ever met at any dealership - with the exception of the former General Manager of the Audi dealership in Austin - he was passionate about the cars and knew more than me about most cars since he got invited to all the dealer events and didn't just go for the booze and food, but to learn more about current and future models.

Some sales people are flat out liars that will do anything to have you sign the deal, so I wouldn't put it past someone to have known they were giving you wrong information in hope that once you signed you are on the hook.

Anything not in writing will not be honored - I would be very surprised if you are able to get them to make any concessions after you have signed, unless you have the ACP feature promise in writing.

You can always try to get them to do something for you based on what they told you, but I'd be surprised if they are willing to negotiate anything that wasn't in writing when you signed the deal.

On the 2015 Ultimate there are several issues with the maps, guidance calculations, and voice recognition of the DIS system - it seems like most of those were solved with a software update that should be standard on the 2016's, so you may be able to live with this. The HUD is awesome, I wish the voice recognition and map data was half as good as the HUS system.

Good luck, and let us know what the dealer says once you speak to them about this issue.

I have an ACP in my sonata and it's pretty much useless. Apple Maps are not really great, messages only via voice, podcasts I'm not using it. Phone calls control is almost the same. Music app is the only thing, but it's not worth it to be that much frustrated and return the car that you actually LOVE. May be a couple of years later, when Apple release the update where we will be able to install any apps, then it will be a great feature.

4- Lastly is probably the most realistic outcome, which is maybe I can get them to pay for the Connectivity BlueLink for the term of the lease, and pay for my map updates.

I would try this route. The Ultimate package far out ways the benefits of ACP. You will not be disappointed in this car if you can get over not having ACP. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you all for your advice - and in particular, thank you for not making aggressive comments blaming me for not being well informed before I purchased! Maybe it's the demographics of people who purchase a Genesis, but people seem to be pretty nice on this forum.

I'm actually usually VERY well informed when I shop for cars. The other two cars I recently test drove (2017 Maxima and A4) I was telling salesman about features they did not know about. But in this case, it was a little bit less researched because the Genesis came on my radar more recently as a consequence of hearing about the ACP update, as well as reading on other forums (Edmunds.com) how aggressively the 2016's were being priced. So when I went to the dealer, and had seen on Apple's own website stating ACP compatibility, it never even occurred to me that this could be false.

Anyway, I appreciated the positive remarks - and yes, maybe I have been a bit tunnel visioned about having ACP. So I see your points. I have made a proposal to the dealership, similar to option #4 so that I keep the car, and they don't have to do the hassle of canceling the transaction.

Just to cover my self however, I spoke with our local attorney general's office, in the consumer protection division, and he seems to believe I have a case for at the very least a formal complaint, and probably canceling the sale, if that's what I want. I just want to have that option if they don't play ball. He turned out to be the lead principal investigator in charge on financial consumer fraud, and even knew off hand the exact codes of the laws pertaining to my situation for me to reference.

I'm waiting to hear back from the dealership, but will post my outcome when I find out! Thanks again to all who responded!

ijano, just an FYI even without ACP, you can still get Siri to interact with the car (read text messages, make calls, etc). Well you used to anyway. Since I upgraded to iOS 10.0.2 for some reason when I try to pull up Siri lately it seems to go off into the weeds.

+1

The Siri integration gets you the most needed benefits of ACP. I have ACP on my car, and while I like it, I would still take the upgrades that come with the Ultimate package and not miss ACP too much.

One of the nice features of ACP is the ability to have Siri set destinations on the fly while you are driving. I find it to be better than the standard Voice Recognition on the stock NAV, but I still like the map detail better on the car's NAV.

I also have the Blue Link package with the Google Destinations. I find that Google almost always gets it right. So... if I were in your shoes, I'd see if the dealer would extend your Blue Link and perform Map updates for a reasonable term. That package best the Apple Maps IMHO. Let us know how you make out.

I just read an article that the New G80 & G90
will not support Apple CarPLAY if you have the 9.2" screen.

Hyundai should consider giving us 2015-16 owners with the 9.2" acreen
free access to
BlueLink. Then we could get Google.

Well, I think we finally have a solution for my situation (to whose who didn't see my post - quick version is I was told by car salesman my Ultimate can support CarPlay during test drive - which I found out after I purchased, is of course untrue. Didn't know that at the time of purchase).

It took a few pestering calls to the dealership, speaking to my car salesman (who I otherwise actually really like, besides mis-informing me on the ACP) at which point I asked to speak to a manager.

I reiterated my proposal to him, which I gave to the salesperson a few days ago, after realizing the car I just leased doesn't support ACP, a feature I've been holding out for more > 2 years, and was told at purchase it did have. The proposal was as follows:

1 - Due to being misinformed, I felt it fair to compensate somewhat on the price of the sale. I felt I got a pretty good deal, but after researching online, thought maybe not a rock bottom price. And given that this was a dealer demo, w. 4k miles on it, and the ACP fiasco, I felt rock bottom price is the only fair way to go. So I saw that some people were getting a money factor of 0.0003 on their leases, whereas I got a 0.0006. The difference after 36 months comes to about $850, so I proposed a refund of $1000 to compensate for the lack of an important feature.

2 - I also requested a free map update to 10.0, as my 2016 came with 8.xxx, and in addition, BlueLink services for the term of the lease, or 3 years. I asked for all 3 services.
I figured this is fair, since at least this will compensate, partially, to one of the key benefits of CarPlay, which is Apple Maps and live traffic information that it provides.

So after a few days of not hearing back, I called and spoke with a floor manager, who proceeded to call the GM while I was on hold.

They said the 2016 demo I purchased was rock bottom price, and they definitely could not do a refund, because they would lose money. They instead countered to offer to swap me out of the car to a "lesser trim" - their words, not mine - that can support ACP. Problem is, last I checked, they didn't have any 2016's left, and the 2017 G80's all had Ultimate trim. So I'm pretty sure I knew their inventory better than they did, and even if they had G80's w/ out the Ultimate, I didn't want to pay the 2017 premium, and end up paying more for a lesser equipped car (because I got my 2016 demo at such a discount, it would probably be less money than a less equipped 2017). So I didn't really want that option.

So we move on to talk about the BlueLink service for free. According to them, they called Hyundai/Genesis and were told no on that. So if I wanted that, they would have to pay out of pocket. My car salesman pointed out that I'd be better off getting a subscription to XM traffic if traffic updates is what I want, rather than the "Guidance" part of BlueLink. However, I responded by saying I want both - because the "Google Local" part of BlueLink would correspond to the updated destination info of Apple Maps, and I want that. And also asked to have my map updated.

We essentially ran the cost of these things, and agreed on $500 for the map, and the extension of XM Traffic, and one year of BlueLink guidance. So they decided they'll just cut me a check and call it even.

So in the end, not nearly the amount I was asking for, but I asked for more than I knew I would end up getting, and also, I wanted the $1000 back based on principal almost more than the $. I figured if I'm going to be misled about purchasing a car not having a feature paramount to me, then I better be getting the best damn deal on that car possible. I felt content that I was when they offered to buy the car back from me rather than refund me more money - I figured if they were able to lose any more money on my car, they would certainly rather do that than take it back and start all over again.

And with the BlueLink features, and Siri handsfree (thanks to those who pointed this out!), and XM traffic, and the otherwise excellent display on the stock NAV, I think I'm ok with not having Apple Carplay. Still disappointed, but not enough to make me not enjoy the car. So now, just going to go learn all the features of the car, and just enjoy it and try not to worry about what it DOESN'T have and focus on all the great features this car DOES have!

Thanks again to those who posted!!

PS - I did also reach out to Hyundai customer care about this, before the dealership and I agreed on the $500 today, but I'm waiting to hear back from whoever my case was referred to. I'll update if they have anything to say Re: getting free BlueLink, etc.

PPS - When my salesman found out about my car not being able to get the ACP update, he told me he called Hyundai and was told that the agent told him "we are supposed to tell people there is nothing in the works right now to make it compatible with the 9" NAV". But then apparently told him something to the effect of "But it's possible it could be updated with in a year." Apparently she told him the 9" NAV hardware makes writing the software for the update more "difficult" but not "impossible" and whether they decide to do it depends on if there is a strong enough demand.
Also, when I spoke to the manager, he stated that in their training they were apparently told "possibly in 6 months". So I don't know, I guess we can take those statements for what their worth, but just thought I would share.

Just so you are aware - XM Traffic is part of XM Data, which is free for 3 years on the Genesis. I just ticked past year 2 on my 2015.

XM Traffic is free for 3 years as srobak said, Bluelink 3 package's one year renew after trial is $150 and Map Update V10 is $169. At the end you got $319. Not bad at all.

I don't find XM traffic useful in the slightest (especially since I run Waze), but believe it or not I do pull up the weather map from time to time to quickly see if there's a weather system pending (yes, I know I can almost as easily do that on my phone as well, but it's easier with the jog dial). I actually wished for that feature at one point in 2005 when I was driving out west and you'd see the massive storm systems on the horizon wayyy off in the distance.

I use that weather feature as well. Wish it would pan and let you know which direction the storms are moving though.

Really? I did not realize that. Is there anything I need to do, like register? Or does it just continue to work w/ out my involvement? I'm surprised the dealership didn't even mention that.

how do we pull up the weather map?

I just read an article that the New G80 & G90
will not support Apple CarPLAY if you have the 9.2" screen.

The G90 isn't available with a 9.2in display.

Nope - it should have been taken care of the date your car was originally purchased. See below:

how do we pull up the weather map?

Select HOME, rotate the jog dial to XM Data. You will see weather, sports, traffic, movie times, gas prices and stock ticker. After you select Weather click MENU for options. Once you are on the map - rotate the jog dial to zoom in and out, and slide the dial to change position.

Does anyone find it odd that CarPlay is available on the Korean G80 with the 9.2" DIS system, yet Hyundai USA is claiming CarPlay incompatibility for the same system?

Korean G80 website:

https://www.genesis.com/kr/en/luxury-sedan-genesis-g80.html

From specs for the 3.8 Finest model:

"DIS(blueLink2.0, 9.2" display, Apple CarPlay, bluetooth hands-free)"

This just adds to my growing list of suspicions that Hyundai simply decided not to issue an upgrade for Ultimate owners due to some internal cost/benefit analysis and is using hardware incompatibility as an excuse.
