Apple CarPlay and Android Auto NOT coming to Ultimate Genesis (2015, 2016)

Likely an error in print. This happened to a few other "features" of the G2/80 back for 2015 and 2016 brochures as well.

So, a few weeks ago I spoke to customer service at MNSoft. I was asking about the AA/CP upgrades for the 15/16. He basically said the unit in those years was developed by LG and that there was disagreement between Hyundai and LG to develop AA/CP support. The 8" screen is Android based and the 9.2" is based on MeeGo platform. It's very plausible about this disagreement as LG has been pushing MeeGo for a good while. Its unfortunate that the customers get screwed out of corporate spats. Then again why have the two platforms and set yourself up like that in the first place.

Why? It was a good idea at the time. Different models with different features has been around as long as the automobile. Hyundai bought what was available at the time and AA and CP were not available. The decision was probably made by 2010 or so. Car Play was announced in 2013.

You[d be amazed at how much of your new car is bought from other suppliers. Most electronics are purchased from suppliers like Bendix, Dana, Bosch, Denso, and others. The fact that two platforms have two suppliers was no big deal. It is still questionable if AA and CP can even be made to operate on the Ultimate system. It is a financial loser to do so. There are not enough Ultimates to justify spending a lot of money on an aging model. Just as you won't be getting it on you 2003 Impala or 1998 Taurus.

The 2015 and 2016 ultimate models uses a powerful Windows based system that works fairly well with the 13.5 updates, however like most Windows based software, it is not Android app friendly. Therefore, the 2015 and 2016 models may never have the Android based Carplay/Android Auto service as an option.

The 13.5 updated Ultimate system is still a great system to use with a very high quality detailed navigation map, so you are not losing much unless you are hooked on Android apps that are only available to the Carplay/Android Auto service.

The 13.5 updated Ultimate system is still a great system to use with a very high quality detailed navigation map, so you are not losing much unless you are hooked on Android apps that are only available to the Carplay/Android Auto service.

this was found to be untrue, we have a member here that tore down the firmware in a 2016 and it is Linux meego, not windows.


case in point the member found that the hardware in the 2018 which does had CarPlay is exactly the same as the hardware in the 20q6, the only difference is the firmware.

it has also been determined that a 2018 unit will boot and work (and CarPlay also works) in a 2015/2016 vehicle but it will not power on the amp, which said member is working on figuring out right now.

I stand corrected. The 2015 and 2016 does seem to have some software differences(affects the 13.5 update) so I will only say that 2015 models are Windows based for sure.

Note: The head-unit from a 2018 model has it own firmware, so yes it should work if the unit can fit into the 2015/2016 model and have the same connectors. However, who will spend the $$$$ to swap the older stock amp to the newer stock amp located in the 2017+ models just for Carplay since the older Lexicon amp does not work with the newer 2017+ head-unit.

My point is that it is highly unlikely the 2015/2016 models will get Carplay/Android Auto from an official Hyundai update. Maybe 2016 model, but not the 2015 without a doubt.

However, if some used 2017+ head units and Lexicon amps can be found then yes it seems that both the 2015 and 2016 models can be physically upgraded without breaking the bank. As it stands the 2017+ Lexican amps are about $1000+ new. A lot of money just to gain Carplay/Android Auto in my opinion.

depends on the person I guess, $1,000 isn’t that much for someone that really wants it, people put twice that into after market amps and speakers to upgrade oem sound systems.

IMO if i was going to go that route (2018 HU into older car), I wouldn’t bother with the OEM amp, I would put in a DSP and aftermarket amp, better sound for about the same price. Warranty on the radio is already done anyway.

True, hence why I said in my opinion. Hell ,some aftermarket head-units can cost $1000. Therefore, upgrading the Genesis stock system can cost nearly as much as a good aftermarket sound system. However, the way I see it is that I will be spending nearly $2k just to have Carplay/Android Auto which is not how I would spend money on my personal 2015 Genesis.

If I were to spend $2000 on a sound system, I would go your route and go full custom not stock with one additional feature. However, everyone places value on whats important to them based on their desire.

Unless I'm mistaken, Suburbazine DID get the "old" amp recognized during diagnostics - but only for about 3 seconds. Guess the firmware shut down the party...

I'm curious where Carguy is getting his info from because I have a 2015 MeeGo Ultimate. Maybe he means 2014, since I'm pretty sure the first gen units were Windows?

As far as the 2018 headunit goes, it's looking like all the fancy "sound processing" features are actually being handled in-house and not on the amp. So it may be possible to bring Quantum and ClariFi to the older head unit.

As far as the difference with the 2015 headunit hardware goes, I think the RAM modules may be a smaller capacity, which may limit the overall capability of the system. Although, Hyundai did yank all the applets that would have used the available RAM, so there may be some free now for "other features".

Everyone makes valid points. The AA/CP thing is something that I doubt many of us concern ourselves with other than, sure, it would be nice to have. But...

Relatively speaking, one must have a specific reason or need to be willing to spend substantial dollars in order to achieve this in an Ultimate '15-16 Genny. I give Sub credit for working on trying to figure it out, but even then it may end up costing bigger bucks to accomplish should he find a solution.

Yet, if anyone is itching to drop some Cleveland's, you're most likely better off going custom to achieve higher fidelity along with every feature in the book. There was a time (ahh youth!) when I spent idiotic money ($14.5k in my 750iL) for what I wanted, or should I say what I thought I had to have. Let's just say audio IS a passion! These days, I'm rather fine with most Mfr. systems that have come quite a way in comparison, not to mention are now being acoustically tuned specifically to the interior of the vehicle. So unless you're building an IASCA show car, it's probably better to spend your hard-earned cabbage on other things.

Age does indeed bring wisdom, I think lol...

It can be Android compatible (at least for Android Auto) just by installing MeeGo Projector for Android (the mirror software). That's how they do it in the 2018.

cut and splice some files into the OS.

cant tell you how since I haven’t isolated the menu structure from the audio controls yet.
