Bought $43000 Lemon! 3.8 AWD 2015 Genesis

S

Somebody Else

I purchased my 2015 Genesis 3.8 AWD Feb 2015.

I'm having and dealing with lots of problems with my car since Feb. 2015. Its new and 1st owner of this vehicle. I'm working on this Lemon case and I would like to let you guys know my process. So you guys can prepare if you having same problem like me.

1. Steering wheel made vibration.
When i purchased my vehicle and it happened right away. I went to Hyundai dealership for get a service of this problem (1 attempt). They said there was no problem with my vehicle (seriously?) After that, I went to another Hyundai for same problem and they found it and adjusted my tire balance and alignment (2 attempt). BUT! had same problem after their adjustment So I went to another dealership. (3 attempts) and finally they found that the problem was came from all the tires So I've got replacement of my all the tires. However, SAME! Hyundai finally realized the tire problem so they RECALL it for change the new tire (4 attempt).

2. Brake problem.
When I tried to push my brake paddle, It was making some strange sound and vibration every single time. I went to Hyundai dealership for this issue and they couldn't find the problem at the first time! (seriously?) (1 attempt). I went to Hyundai again for this same issue and they finally found that the noise and vibration came from Brake booster on my vehicle. They ordered the part from S.Korea and installed it.(2 attempt). After that, instantly my brake paddle made noise and vibration again and even the paddle moving freely! So I went to Hyundai again and they found that the brake paddle was freely moving and need adjustment of paddle. So they adjusted my brake paddle. (3 attempt). After a month later, It did make same problem and I went to Hyundai again (4 attempt). They are now investigating the issues.

3. Knocking sound from Engine room.
I can hear the engine knocking sound Especially between 24-30 mph speed rage and when the engine cool down (Every single morning!). I went to Hyundai for this issue and they found that the problem came from dashboard and they adjusted the plastic dashboard. (1 attempt). After that, It was NOT FIXED and I went to Hyundai again and they found that the sound came from cowl cover. So they adjusted the cowl cover. (2 attempt). HOWEVER, It's not fixed!!! So I went to Hyundai again and they are now investigating the problem of this issue. (3 attempt)

After that, I made a case to Hyundai customer service for report Lemon before contact attorney. I simply trusted Hyundai because its their premium car brand and advertised as it. So I wanted to listen Hyundai first and I totally believed that they will handle this situation and make customer satisfaction. I waited 1 week after applied my case and finally received the answer from the regional office that they can't make any replacement of my vehicle as new and also not going to refund of my full purchase price. The regional customer service employee was terrible and they didn't even try to listen my all the concerns. They didn't even say any sorry to me. Moreover, employee said that he also has a new Genesis but no issue at all and I'm the the only one who made complain about this car. (Yes!!!! I picked the wrong one!!!). Only they can do for me is Keep REPAIR and not gonna buy my car back even replace the vehicle.
Right after this phone call, I made call to Hyundai head office and complained about it. They said, That decision is Hyundai official answer and there is nothing they can do for me.

So I called the attorney for this situation and they reviewed my case and they accepted my case. So we sent the official letter to Hyundai and waiting their answer.

I will keep update this!

Very sorry to hear about the problems with your car. I hope they get resolved to your satisfaction.

Every manufacturer has these from time to time. I am sorry you are experiencing this and I hope you are treated better. Good luck.

It's possible that the vibration in the steering and the brake problems are from a warped rotor. I've had the same problem on a $60K Audi. Sometimes if they are in the lot a long time the rotor can be rusted on one side. A few hard stops without letting the rotors cool can warp them.

If I have to do a hard stop at a light, I'll put the car in Neutral and take pressure off the brakes.

Heck with neutral - If you really want to take pressure off of the brakes, throw it into reverse!

Sorry - couldn't resist :)

Sorry to hear about this, sounds like you just did get a lemon out of the batch. Sucks that Hyundai isn't considering buying your car back, especially if you've had to take your car back more than 3 times for the same problem.

Infiniti ended up buying my Q50 back just because they couldn't fix my navigation screen going black randomly. The couldn't figure it out after taking it back like 4 times and just opened up the case with Infiniti Consumer Affairs. It does sound like you have a case though. Best of luck!

Thank you for your reply. I tried to negotiate with Hyundai customer service department without attorney. They reviewed my all the history of record and then they simply denied without any explanation about why they made this decision. I think they don't want to negotiate with customer.

Please keep us informed about your situation. It would be good to know what rights we have as consumers regardless of the car model we buy. I have always wanted to know how lemon law work. May I ask what state you live in? Lemon laws vary from state to state.

Best of Luck and sorry for what you are going through.

I'm in the same situation. My attorney filed suit about 30 days ago and should be hearing from HMA any day now. Good luck to both of us. :)

Hi. Thank you for your support. Im live in VA and the lemon vary from each state to state. And also there is federal lemon if you dont fit in state lemon law that you might consider it.

Hello. Thank you for your information
I really like to know your things and i really hope you to hear the best settlement with hyundai. please let me know.

I have a 2015 3.8 AWD with less than 10,000 miles and I can say at this point the car is flawless. I also bought the super extended warranty that takes me out to 100,000 miles for everything that is not a normal wear item, like tires, brakes, bulbs and logical things that would wear on any car. I was very concerned buying my first non US semi luxury car, but after my last Town Car started to rust at 40,000 miles and Ford would do nothing I went to a "foreign car". I am shocked that you can have so many problems right "out of the box" without any serious resolutions offered. My vehicle was purchased in the North East US from a Hyundia dealership that had only sold one other Genesis in that year, so I was extra skeptical. I also notice that they are few and far between out on the roadways so your case is very interesting. If you could please provide more detailed information, not that anyone would doubt you, to help us fellow owners understand you plight, it would be helpful. So good luck and feel free to contact directly, if for nothing else a good old "Yankee" opinion.

Sorry but this is blown way out of proportion. The tires were defective and this was not picked up at first, also seems like the rotors were warped. This is a very easy fix not to mention faulty tires have nothing to do with Hyundai as they are not the manufacturer. Last item sure sounds like a rattle.

Not sure but I personally think a tire problem, warped rotors and a rattle are no no where near sufficient to return a car under the lemon law.

Lemon Laws are different depending on what state you live in. In California, if your car has been in for service for over 3 or 4 weeks combined for the same issue within the first 18 months (95% sure it's 18 months) from the date you purchased it (brand new), it should be covered under lemon law.

I just went through this recently with Infiniti. They were actually really easy to deal with. So make sure you keep taking your car into the dealer and keep those service requests that you sign, since they will take a look at (at least that's what Infiniti did). Also take video and pictures since that will only help your case, and email (don't call) the dealer as proper documentation, so you have a paper trail of the entire problem.

I'm going to slightly thread-jack for a moment because this post actually reminded me of something that completely saved my bacon once.

About 20 years ago I was at school at Michigan State. I was working overnight in the computer labs and got done at 4am. It had snowed about 3 or 4 inches while I was on shift and the plows hadn't yet come out - so on my way home I am screwing around with the car in the snow a bit because the roads are completely empty.

1986 Pontiac Grand Am, 2.5 4cyl, FWD, 5 speed manual. Bare-bones everything. No traction control, no ABS, no air bag, nothing.

At one point I am going like 45 or 50 in a 30, sliding the car around, having a grand ol time.

Suddenly the train crossing lights about an 1/8th of a mile ahead of me light up and the arms come down. Those particular trains are heading to Lansing from Detroit and Pontiac and are carrying loads of cars fresh off the line - and they usually come through every bit of 70mph.

I go for the brake and the car instantly starts sliding without losing any speed. The gates are coming down and I know the train is only a few seconds behind it. After a split second I instinctively hit the clutch and floor the brake - locking up all 4 tires and sliding along at about 35 or 40. I then throw it into reverse, pin the throttle and dump the clutch.

The wheels and trans whine & scream - the tires burn through the light top snow, the packed snow underneath and the layer of ice on top of the pavement - and bring me to a rapid, shuddering halt about 15 feet short of the tracks - just as the engine goes racing past.

Not sure why I thought to do that - too much time screwing around on trails and in the snow in the U.P. of Michigan as a kid I guess... but I knew there was no way I could get stopped using the brakes and I figured even if I blew up the trans and the clutch it would be cheaper to replace than my life.

Saved my ass!

The Pontiac engine or the train engine? Those '80s motor mounts had a tendency to fall apart.

Pontiac. Hey - as much of a rattletrap & rustbucket as that thing was (coming out of the 6 months a year salted roads of the UP of Michigan) - that car left me stranded ONE time in it's 198,000 miles of use. It took a LOT of abuse for many years...

...and it walked away dependably from that experience too. :)

My shorts on the otherhand....

Not sure why I just re-read my last post here and realized it was wrong. The TRAIN engine had gone racing past, just as I came to a stop about 15 feet short of the gate. Not sure why the hell I posted otherwise. LOL
