If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hey Guy
Reaching out from nyc. I want to change my transmission fluid myself, my mileage is close to 60k. I know some most cars require a new filter replacement...is it the same for genny? Or can someone tell me what I need to do for the transmission fluid change.

This is a how-to on the 3.8 coup model, but the same process on a similar 8 speed automatic transmission that is in the 2012+ sedan models.

From what I read, the filter/pan does not need to be changed before 100k miles(large built-in filter attached to the pan). However, it could not hurt I guess to change it sooner. Therefore, I will soon just change my transmission fluid just at 76k miles and then the fluid/filter/pan at about 100k miles. After that, I will change my transmission fluid every 50k miles and the filter/pan 100k miles.

You will need about 8 quarts of this fluid type; OEM or aftermarket.

This video is pretty much how you do the job on our 8 speed automatic transmissions, however the service guys in the video should have just fill the transmission pan with 7 liters of fluid first and then let it drip out the check hole at a specific operation temperature per the service manual; instead of just fumbling with how much fluid to use in the filling process.

Update: I just recently changed my fluid in my 2015 5.0 and a drain and fill just required about 3 1/12 quarts of fluid in my Genesis. A transmission pan change would probably require about 4-5 quarts depending on how much fluid is inside the filter.

Here is what I did for my transmission fluid change in my 5.0. I will drop my pan at about 100k miles to change the filter.

I used Revanol brand SP-IV RR transmission fluid that is made in Germany with my AST fluid pump to quickly fill the transmission pan.

I was under the expression that I would need about 7 quarts to fill the pan properly, but only about 3 1/4 quarts of fluid drained out of the transmission pan. Therefore, I just replaced the amount of fluid that drained out since my transmission was shifting well, so it appears to be filled correctly in that regard. Therefore, no need to waste good fluid out the level check plug. The transmission pan in my 5.0 seems to hold only about 3 1/2 quarts anyway since the fluid just flows out the fill hole when I tried to add more.

The only thing that may need be to changed on a drain and fill are the rubber o-ring gaskets on the 8mm hex drain/level plugs. The o-rings gaskets are standard 116 sized rubber gaskets, however my drain gasket still seem good even though i replaced it anyway; so you may not really need to replace it after one use. I changed my gasket to prevent a leak. The 8mm hex fill bolt uses a metal washer which I changed as well, but it seem good as well.

The job is pretty easy as transmission fluid changes go.

Note: The shift cable is in the way of the fill bolt on the drivers side of the transmission pan. In my case it helped to hold my angled fill adapter in place while I pumped fluid into my transmission, however it can also be a problem if you use a different type of pump method.

My old fluid. It was dark reddish color, but still seem good for fluid that is 76k miles old.

New fluid. A nice light red color.

The AST fluid pump and 102 adapter I used to fill my transmission pan.

The drain bolt is the bolt in the center of the pan. The level check bolt is the bolt near the outside of the pan. I only removed the drain bolt since I knew how much fluid to replace without pulling the check bolt. However, I may still open the check bolt to make sure that my transmission is properly filled after letting the transmission fluid warm up to about 130F before I install my under body cover.

Final advice, make sure your car is level before draining the fluid or checking the level for accuracy. I used jack stands to support my Genesis.

Good job! Did mine at 60K, along with the pan + filter as well. He was able to get almost 7qts drained out.

Sounds about right depending on if the fluid was cold or not when it was drained from the transmission. The fluid expands when warm so if the pan holds about 4-5 quarts of cold transmission fluid with the filter; my guess is that the same amount of warm/hot fluid would measure over 6 quarts due to fluid expansion.

Only 3 1/4 quarts of cold transmission fluid drained out of my pan.

I believe that the Ravenol would be the better choice of the two due to it being a fluid specially formulated as a SP-IV RR fluid. However, a good quality multi-make transmission like the Amsoil should work well I suppose if the company list it as being compatible with SP-IV RR fluid.

You can also score some from the KIA dealer w/ the same spec, as the Stinger has the same transmission - it was $20 per bottle. My Genesis dealer didn't sell it by the quart & acted like I was crazy for asking for it... As opposed to the KIA dealer saying "Sure, we've got some - how many do you want?"

I gave Amsoil a call and they verified that the signature series will work just fine, in fact it will be better for my transmission than the OE fluid because it's a lot lower viscosity when it's cold thus I will not have the jerky shifts when the trans is at 40F (I live in Rhode Island) and I also checked the stinger forum and saw a lot of people using Amsoil for performance due to the fact it reduces the trans operating temperature thus the seals and clutches don't get heat damaged, but I'm not taking a 4700lb car to the track!
Also does anyone know the part number for the 2018 Genesis G80 sport transmission pan?
