  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

Seems to be just the 18s. My trim is from the 2019 and its been fine since repair but now its ceramic coated so im good for years.
Yes, well...I'm looking at an 18 :). Regarding this ceramic coating - does the whole car typically get done? Do yourself or 3rd party? How much is the cost and how long does it last?

Ceramic coating varies. You can DIY or hire a professional. I had it professionally installed with a 4 year warranty for $1,000 however this price includes the paint correction to repair some imperfections and swirls from previous owner. He was in my garage with a mobile utility van from 9am -11pm. He worked his but off and its magnificent haha. Always shiny. Always had that fresh wax look even after rain and a few days of pollen.

Direct message me of you have more question on the coating. I dont want to hijack the topic.

Nice!

when I get all my moldings on,I'm just going to wax them with the rest of the car, usually 2 or 3 times a year.

Question: has anybody with a 2019 had any issues with the trim? Sounds like no, but wanted to confirm. Also, for anybody who replaced their 2018 trim, has there been any further issues?

I have not seen 2019 issues yet but may be too early to tell.

I have NOT had issues since the 2018 trim was replaced but it's only been about 4 months and it's now ceramic coated so odds are I won't be a valuable judge of opinion on this.

Hello ... I tried this product on mine - Blue Magic Metal Polish Cleaner ... did nothing to improve the look. Anybody have any luck with a commercial cleaner / polish ?

Still waiting for my trim, must be on a slow boat from Korea.
Wonder if trumphole is going to tax it extra special too?

Anyone have a part #(s) and/or good source to buy the trim other than local dealer?

dude, its gonna cost you like a $1000. Get the damn dealership to file it under warranty.

Yea not sure why anyone would want to try and take that task on anyways. All the molding has to come off and the back 2 small windows. Not worth it. Take it to the dealership and show them this thread. Genesis gave my dealer no issue.

Got mine back from the dealer today, all new trim pieces, I'm happy again.:)

I quickly reviewed this thread to see if there was any way to clean off the water spots / discoloration on my 2018 G80 sport (purchased April 2018) trim while waxing one of the G80's sports today at our cottage, which discoloration have been a major problem on the front of the car's trim and on lower door trim for the one at cottage (note: no problem regarding trim around side windows on this car) -- this is a problem which has plagued both cars (I purchased 2 within a couple of months of one another but do not recall the extent of the other one at home). Given the discussion, it appeared to be a defect. So, thinking I did not have much to loose, I tried some "Mother's California Gold Chrome Polish" which I had on hand, tested it in a lower grill area, and it removed all spots and discoloration. It cleaned up all discolored trim on this car - door handles, front grill and related trim areas, and the trim at the bottom of the doors. In a couple of weeks when I return home, I'll try it on my other G80 sport. Just a thought....

There are 2 separate spotting issues.

1) water spots - These can be removed using a "polishing agent" or clay bar.
2) "lacquer" damage - These are cause by the lacquer being removed. The only way to fix is replace trim or polish out the remaining lacquer (not a viable option IMO).

The base and 5.0 trim level trim has been tinted/darkened with a copperish coating/lacquer on the Sport model. This problem seems to be related to the G80 Sport only. The Sport model has a tinted/darker chrome on the side window trim. I've had all my window trim replaced under warranty on my 2018 G80 Sport. I'm noticing lacquer spotting re-occurring subsequently, but keeping the trim clean and waxed to reduce the damage.

Let me add to the "mottled" trim problem. New 2019 G70 (Elite/Prestige) with driver side window trim showing brown dotted stains. Tried a lot of stuff to remove, but to no avail. Dealership said bring it in and have all the window trim replaced. here's a pic if anyone is interested:

EDIT: Sorry, good info, but wrong forum

Had the trim on my 2018 G80 Sport replaced last week. Looks great now! BUT now I have wind noise from the drivers side door that I did not have before. Thoughts on what to do to fix it? Is there an easy fix without having to go back to the dealer?

I am from Canada and have the same issue. Build date was June 2, 2017. I have just notified the service department. I will keep the forum posted.

Same issue on my 2018 G80 Sport, build date March 7, 2017. Had Service Mgr check during recent oil change and he gave me the attached TSB. Even saw a used 2018 Sport on the lot with the same discoloration.
Oh well, time to get Customer Care involved. Appreciate all the great info here!

Personal opinion, GM products are trash. Number one problem are transmissions. The only American brand I'd buy is a Ford product.

It seems that the service manager is pulling the ole switcharoo on ya.
That TSB is for problems on NON SPORT G80's. The G80 SPORT does't have chrome trim around the windows, they are painted and it's not even supposed to pretend to be chrome.
