  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

All the more reason I'm glad I wrapped mine with vinyl

View attachment 15239I have my G80 sport for about 3 months and after I got my car back from the dealership for some rattle and armrest fabric issue. I notice that the dark chrome trim around the doors starting to discolor. I see spots everywhere on the chrome. Pieces started to look like it was from a 15 year old car.

Is anyone is having this issue? This is a WTF moment.
Yes: I am having the same exact discoloration on the Metal Trim Work, I am going to tell the Service department where I bought the Car at., Have you done anything about it?

Had my trims replaced 3 times. They acknowledge there is an issue but can't pinpoint where it comes from.

I just purchased a 2017 g80 a lease that was turned in ... i didnt pay much attention to this until now.. i had the car for 2 weeks. all the trim around windows and sunroof is oxidized and faded. I havent brought this up to the dealership, but i have a service next week to replace a camera part. the car is still under warranty... who has had luck with warranty replacing trim?

I have the same issue. Had my G80 Sport for 2 months. Never put cleaner on the chrome.
I have the same issue on a single piece under the passenger rear window. My car is 1 month old with 1200 miles on it.

Question: has anybody with a 2019 had any issues with the trim? Sounds like no, but wanted to confirm. Also, for anybody who replaced their 2018 trim, has there been any further issues?
I have a trim problem. I own a 2019 G70 genesis

Go to dealer and have them replace them. I bought a 2018 G80 Sport off of a two year lease and it has the same problem. I went to a Genesis dealer and they are replacing them free of charge.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Stopped by my local dealer and showed them my discolored trim piece. They are ordering new one and will call me when it arrives. Warranty of course.

Update since I arrived back in the states, took my car to dealership for this and also few other things, they replaced under warranty. I was their first Genesis with this issue. Much happier now, just sucks it has happen / may happen again.

I brought my '18 G80 sport in for the turbo oil recall and had them also take a look at the trim. According to them, Genesis is no longer replacing the trim. They are now directed to use this special one time only use buffing compound (and tool?). Well they had to order the part, but happened to have some "leftover" so they did ~75% of both sets of trim around the windows.
It appears to me that they are simply polishing off the dark chrome and leaving it in a more polished state. I can say this much it attracts and keeps fingerprints like crazy. Has anyone else run into this?

I would go to a different dealer. I just had mine replaced two weeks ago under warranty.

My hypothesis is this issue is only applicable to the 2018 G80 Sport based on the postings in this thread. If any non 2018 G80 Sport owner has this issue let us know. Additionally, it would be helpful if any non-U.S. 2018 G80 Sport owners have this issue (e.g. our northern neighbors -eh ;). My 2018 G80 Sport was purchased in the East Tennessee. Port of entry was Brunswick, Georgia (U.S. not Russia :p) with a manufacture date of April 28, 2017

The 2018 G80 Sports is the only model with the darkened window trim pieces. Per the sales brochure "Sport dark chrome grille surround, grille insert and window trim".

I suspect this is an issue with the supplier using a "lacquer" to darken the non-Sport trim that is highly susceptible to this discoloration (acid rain, manufacture post lacquering cleaning solution) and not doing proper Q/A on their product before delivering to Genesis/Hyundai. My replacement trim had the same minor pitting on one piece. I assume, but cannot confirm, the dealer ordered replacement trim and did not "borrow" it from another G80 sport on the lot.

Since the replacement, I've done numerous home hand washes, 1 touch-free drive through wash, parked outside/driven in the rain, and the discoloration has not re-occurred. Car is kept garaged at home.

I did not discover this until my first home wash a couple of weeks after delivery. It took me several months to take it back to the dealer. Dealer replaced at no cost/no fuss (Mr. bubbaG80Sport we'll order the parts and fix the issue no problem).

My suggestions are:
1) Keep complaining to dealer
2) Find another dealer
3) Call Genesis/Hyundai repeatedly until you get resolution. Being gracious, charming and courteous will go a long way. As they say “You attract more bees with honey than vinegar”.
Just located this post! I have a Genesis G80 Sport 2019. Noticed it two weeks after I got the vehicle. They other door trims are doing it now. I really think it has something to do with going through car wash. My others trims we’re not doing it until my last two recent car washes.

I have 2 that are going to be replaced next week...
If Genesis was not going to replace them, well let's just say I refused to sign the arbitration paperwork and let it go at that.

This "discoloration" on the window trim is a defect. This trim/coating is not able to stand up to the weather/environment. I've had all of this window trim replaced twice (covered by warranty/no cost to me) on my 2018 G80 sport due to this issue. Issue appears to be specific to the G80 Sport trim level. The window trim is darkened on the G80 Sport compared to the 3.8 and 5.0 models.

I've taken to applying a "ceramic" product called "The Last Coat upgraded formula TLC2" on this trim to protect it. It's been ~6 months since the new trim was installed and coated with TLC2. So far I'm not seeing the "discoloration" issue.

The TLC2 is doing so well, I've applied it to the non-filmed body panels (doors, B+C pillars, non-glass parts of roof and trunk) . Car stays cleaner longer and repels/resists water spots. This is not a commercial grade (~+$75USD/oz) ceramic coating. A 16oz bottle costs $37USD. It only takes about 1->2oz to do an average size 4 door sedan. Mfg. claims life of product is up to 6 months versus wax being 1-3 months. So far I'm forgoing waxing and rather impressed.

Worth noting we have this same issue on the G70 sport dark chrome trim. I've had mine all replaced, and the replacement pieces are still flaking/peeling and need replacing again. Manufacturing issue for sure.

Also, the guy who's dealership polished the dark chrome off.... I would have never let this happen. Now you have limited to no recourse anywhere else and your chrome trim doesn't match the dark chrome elsewhere.

I'm the guy who's dealership polished it off. I didn't sign off on it. I'm not overly concerned about it impacting anything going forward. Supposedly Genesis is making the decisions on what is or is not being covered. They are asking again and if Genesis denies it for a second time (supposedly) my next course of action is direct with Genesis. As it's been repeatedly explained to me this is not a Dealership decision ultimately. Thank you for sharing with me what my future option limitations are though.

Fair enough, and i guess I was a bit blunt. My concern (facing this potential same problem) is that by polishing it off you are changing the appearance and colour. Now there is trim that at one point matched when the car was new (and still matches on new sport models) which now doesn't. The car has effectively been altered from factory. The fact the dealership did anything supposedly at the direction of Genesis is ownership enough of a warranty issue. The resolution is the problem I would be arguing, it seems it is a strictly financial decision that can easily be argued with the points above as not appropriate.

The second point, and again my concern, is that now if you were to go to another dealership after this happened they would say tough luck, the trim has been altered/damaged and is not valid for warranty. This assumes they don't agree with the original polishing dealership and it truly is not a Genesis corporate solution to the issue (likely) and treat it like an alteration/damage and not covered by warranty through them. Now you're stuck unless the original dealership owns up to it.

Definitely overthinking this, but again in the same boat here and I sure as hell don't want the dealership polishing anything on my car, let alone changing the finish. I would also be concerned the compound they used scored the clearcoat/glass on either side of the trim assuming they left it on the car when doing this.

Please let us know how this turns out.

Just heard back from the dealership and was told Genesis approved the trim replacement after I laid my case out in email to the service advisor. I'd love for them to actually figure out a fix for the problem.
