  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

I saw somewhere online while looking up the recall there is still no ETA for the fix. This make Genesis look like a miickey mouse organization
I had an active recall on the Cadillac Escalade I traded in for my Genesis for YEARS.
I was finally contacted after I got rid of the truck that a remedy was now available.
This isn't unique to Genesis.

Yep, there was a stop sale hold on my 2016 Chevy SS. I bought it, but could not take possession for 2 months plus (they let me keep my trade and then gave me the original amount for it) due to a seat belt issue. This is most definitely not a Genesis only issue.

At 40K miles my 2018 G80 3.3T Sport is again showing discoloration on the driver front, passenger front and driver rear lower window trim.
This would be the 3rd time I've had the trim replaced. I am meticulous about my care car. I wash car with pH balanced car soap and waxed or used ceramic coating on the window trim after every wash.

When I took to dealer for the ABS recall fix I requested this be replaced under warranty. After 1 week and no response from dealer I called 3 days in row leaving a message to get a status. I finally got a dealer service representative. They told me replacement parts were in and I requested an appointment to get the trim replaced with a loaner vehicle. They said no loaners were available. I requested how long the work would take and was put on hold. A different service representative came on the line and told me they received a letter from "Genesis" saying this window trim would no long be replaced under warranty. Tech suggested I contacted Genesis Customer car.

I called Genesis customer care and they said they would need a PA # (Pre approval/Prior Authorization) and estimated cost.
I went back to dealer and requested they submit a PA and provide me estimated cost.

After 1 week of no response from dealer I called. They said they would need pictures of the damaged trim. This weekend I sent pictures to the dealer and now awaiting a response.

This is a classic case of "passing the buck" betwixt the dealer and manufacture. Frustrating !

Literally just had my trim replaced for the second time under warranty. Touched up the leather seats as well where the colour had rubbed off under warranty. Loaner provided. Nothing else was done. Besides the trim not getting any better, very happy with the Canadian service.

What part of Canada are you in? In Calgary, the dealer would not replace mine, just a buff job that lasted about two months. Not impressed.

Bubba,
I assume you are parking in a garage? How about during the days? I had mine replaced maybe a year ago and have used that wipe on ceramic coating that i think you recommended. So far so good and I just gave it a good look over this past week. I've been meaning to apply another coat of The Last Coat, now I'll make a point of it. That sucks to hear of the runaround, but I love the persistence. I'd be the same way.

Car is garaged at home. Away from home (e.g. work, golf course, bar, shopping etc.) car is mostly parked outdoors in the South East region of U.S.

I had the trim and wheels replaced twice, that's fine and dandy, but Genesis just kept putting on the same old junk that I knew wasn't going to hold up. Genesis was supposed to be a notch above the rest, and I gave them a chance to prove it, but they have proven to be just another car manufacturer that refuses to improve on their low quality components. It's really hard to believe that Genesis probably replaced the trim and/or the wheels on every G80 sport they made, and yet they are fine with not improving things so that replacement isn't needed again. shame on them.

I know how you feel. This will be the first and the last Genesis I will ever purchase. I can not deal with the service department anymore no matter how good the car is. I never had this kind of issue with Infiniti and MB dealership.

View attachment 15239I have my G80 sport for about 3 months and after I got my car back from the dealership for some rattle and armrest fabric issue. I notice that the dark chrome trim around the doors starting to discolor. I see spots everywhere on the chrome. Pieces started to look like it was from a 15 year old car.

Is anyone is having this issue? This is a WTF moment.

IMHO, replacing defective parts with the same unimproved parts is one of the greatest wrongs a manufacturer can do. I’m EXTREMELY disappointed to see Genesis doing it. Any manufacturer can run into problems, but prolonging them intentionally is a cardinal sin.

I am having the issue at 13,000 miles for the second time. I called up my dealer and they said, "bring the car in so we can see exactly what we need to order". No fuss, no muss. Not sure why some folks are having so much trouble...

Many manufacturers follow and participate in forums like this to help with customer satisfaction and quality control, maybe Genesis/Hyundai just don't care.

So I took the car to my dealer, Classic Genesis of Mentor yesterday. Showed the the 3 discolored trim pieces to the service manager. He had the the parts manager come out to ensure they ordered the correct parts. Then he told me they would call to set up an appointment just as soon as the parts came in.
If it is harder than that for you then you need to find a new dealer....

It's not that it's hard, it's the fact that it keeps happening and it will continue unless they fix the problem, and fixing the problem isn't just slapping on the same old parts that don't hold up.
Odds are you'll be back next year for more pieces...don't forget to look at your wheels closely, the finish peels off rather easily too. You can find another dealer, but they'll just put on the same cruddy parts.

Not sure at all what you are talking about. I never said the trim was well made or that Genesis does not need to find a permanent fix. I was simply alluding to folks who can't seem to get their dealers to replace the trim without them having to jump through hoops.

I took my 2019 Genesis G80 sport in for service last week and to look at the dark(er) chrome trim around the four doors. It looked like hard water stains. The service manager had one of their detail guy rub out the "water spots" with 3M #2 cutting compound. It took him about an hour in the service lot. It removed the darker coating too reveal a uniform stainless steel finish underneath As it turned out, the darker finish over the stainless steel trim had failed. The service manager was willing to order new trim for my G80. There isn't a large difference between the dark trim and the natural stainless trim. I have been watching the "failing trim" thread on the forums and came to the realisation that if I replaced the trim, it would just eventually fail as well. So, I elected to stay with the stainless steel look...ya, it's a little bit lighter than the factory coating, but it is uniform. I'm OK with that. I wonder what it would cost to repair if it was off warranty?

By the way, A fellow with a new 2020 G70 came in as I was leaving the dealership with the same issue only in the early stages. Unfortunately for him, He has the dark chrome door handles as well as the trim. It really showed up and not in a good way.

Parts and labor to replace all window trim on my 2019 G70 was almost $2,000 last year.
