If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

Agree with all on why Genesis does not make a revision change to the affected parts with an improved part. Also wonder what would happen if the dealer, prior to installing brand new parts would have their body shop clear coat the trim parts to see if that would hold up or protect the present coating better? I have a door handle that has developed a bubble under the coating. Only a matter of time before the bubble breaks through and I need a new door handle. my other trim is still holding up for the moment but I can see small water like spots starting to develop on some parts so only a matter of time before my trim develops the same problems others have been having. Would be interesting to know how many vehicles Genesis has replaced trim on so far?

I have not had time to take my car to the dealer for them to check the trim a second time...have just been too busy. I do not think, fingers crossed, that it will be an issue getting the trim replaced, especially considering they've done it once before without question. My biggest concern is what happens once the warranty period is over and the trim looks like crap again? It's not like it's a $100 fix...It's literally my only complaint with this vehicle. I love everything else about it, but it makes me sick when I wash it and see how bad the trim looks. I hate to be "that guy", but this would keep me from being a second time Genesis owner. My only other choice is to have it professionally wrapped, at my expense, and be done with it.

Throwing my name in the ring. Had purchased my 18' G80 Sport brand new, and had the driver side trim replaced under warranty last year. The rear passenger trim was replaced on the same side the year prior. And low and behold, now the passenger sider needs replacement. Needing to take the car in for the ABS recall, but the local Genesis service center is all booked up until 08/04. Going to see if they will replace it under warranty, but not holding my breath. I see some people have come up with some potential "fixes" for their own peace of mind, outside of the dealership replacing it, and I'm wondering if I'll be doing the same. I'll update if they decide to pick up the tab after all. Lord knows I'll fight as long as I can for them too.

I wonder if this was something that was fixed on the ‘19s. I guess I’ll find out, possibly the hard way ....
Definitely not fixed. I’m having the same issue with my 2020 G80 Sport. I brought the car to the dealership and they told me they wanted $60 to buff it out with compound. When I said that was ridiculous they told me to buy the compound and do it myself. This is no small task. So disappointed in that customer service experience. A letter to Genesis Canada will be on the way shortly…

Buffing the trim will completely remove the "dark" coating. That's not acceptable to me.

This is 100% a "WARRANTY" issue. You have a piss poor dealer. Demand that they turn it in as warranty! Go to another dealer if you have to. DO NOT ACCEPT THIS ANSWER!

after much research and frustration with you all, I found the fix:

Ordered this stuff from Amazon- arrived this morning, Just tested 30 minutes ago- paper towel- hand buff on- rub off- waited 30 minutes before posting and still perfect where I tested, not a spot or stain to be found. So I'm going to do the rest of the car, this will save us from the dealer frustrations, screw em. Post your success story and love looking at your 3.3T again :)

Thank you so much! I registered here just to find something like this. I just bought a PGA G80 with this same issue. The dealer already has the parts to replace it, but if all it is is oxidation that I can remove myself, I'd rather just do it. Their service sucks so bad, I don't want to risk them doing anything stupid.

The HUGE issue with you fix is, it's the same as what Genesis is recommending, it removes the "dark tint finish" to the trim, making it polished chrome. One of the reasons I wanted a Sport model was specifically for the dark tint on the window trim. Plus, now your door handles don't match. Or your grill trim. This isn't ok in my book

I mean if it's between this and this and dealing with a dealer non stop for the same parts its great for me. Tint is still dark, maybe not mirror but plenty shine, and this is still with residue on it since I just finished and didnt wash down. Did the whole side in 20 minutes but lesser of 2 evils, everyone says it'll happen again anyway so. Honestly when I bought my car it was already like this with the oxidation since I bought it used, so this is a wonderful thing for me. People who bought brand new and saw it fade may feel otherwise, but I love it.

If it's under the bumper to bumper warranty, Genesis should replace it. If enough people complain and have it replaced, maybe Genesis will come up with a more permanent solution that we can all benefit from. So long as people accept it other than how it should be, Genesis will do nothing towards a long term solution, and that's a issue that affects all of us. That's all I'm saying. I'm glad you're happy with your solution. I, like many others, am not though.

Curious if anyone has tried using Meguiars Ultimate compound on the trim?

ahh, I didn't really realize just how different the "polished" part looked compared to the "tarnished". I definitely prefer the dark tint, I just hate the spots. Oh well, my dealer is still on the book to replace all of my trim in a couple of weeks, so we'll see how that goes and how long it lasts.

Just wanted to pitch in my experience here. Purchased a 2018 G80 Sport with 40k miles with severe discoloration all around. Brought it to local Hyundai & they dragged their feet a bit. Kept getting "someone will get back to you by tomorrow" every day. Eventually upon calling back, I was informed that the repair was NOT covered under warranty because "paint is only covered until 26k miles". I insisted this isn't a paint issue, and again, I got a "we'll call you later".

Called into the two nearest Genesis dealers [both two hours away in opposite directions] & received the same response - "someone will call you tomorrow".

No phone calls, despite me calling several times to follow up.

I decided to email the service manager at my local Hyundai directly. I politely explained my situation, explained that this is a common issue on this trim, & provided detailed photos. I also provided a link to this thread to show that many others are experiencing the issue & having it resolved under warranty. I got a call back in under 24 hours to inform me that all the parts were ordered & to set up an appointment.

My takeaway: be polite, courteous, understanding, but firm. Make sure you have the info you need ready [Vin, photos, this thread, etc] & read how other people responded to curveballs thrown their way.

Here's what my trim currently looks like. It's super sunny so it was hard to get accurate depictions, but yeah, it's really bad looking.

Good luck to everyone else!

Our 2020 g80 has done the same thing. Bottom trim replaced 6 months ago, top trim 2 months ago. Bottom trim is doing the same thing again. I think this is going to be a continuous battle.

I just had all the trims replaced today of my 2019 G80 including the two rear quarter glass. $0 cost to me but dealer charge to genesis was $1945.00.
Experience was pleasant. Went for an inspection, Dealer ordered the trims, Dealer made the service appointment and had me dropped off the car on Thursdsy evening . Car was ready on Friday afternoon.

The new 2022 G80 sport has the same dark chrome trim all around. Looks nice on the lot but after a few months the problems start. Can't believe that this has been going on for 4-5 years and they don't do anything about it.
