  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis G70 Reviews

The midsize lux sedan segment isn't slow in Korea; it's by far the largest segment.

The fact that the G80 (despite its age) is only down 6.9% compared to last year is pretty impressive.

EQ900 sales are down in large part due to the sales of the new K900 doing so well.

As for the US, yes - lux sedan sales are down, but the article totally ignores that Genesis sales are down as much as they are b/c of the delay in launching the '19MY and the halt of shipments of the '18 back in spring.

Genesis may have over-estimated the market for smaller lux sedans in Korea; but still, the G70 is doing about on par what the German competition is doing in that segment.

Where the Germans have the edge is more variety in the powertrain dept., in particular, electrification.

Not sure what you mean by segment that is sagging - as lux CUVs have yet to make major headway in the Korean market.

K900 sales are way, way up and have more than made up for the decline in G90 sales.

At minimum, the G70 and G80 need a hybrid variant pronto; the new 2.5T wouldn't hurt either.

You make several god points. I think the major flaw in my reasoning was that I wasn't thinking specifically about the Korean market, which the article addressed. Thanks for the corrective input.

I agree that the 10 spoke rims are the best. Am I correct that the 20’s go on the 18” all season and the 10 and 5 rims are the 19”?

I gotta admit that you and Tonester have changed my mind about those rims. Definitely agree that the 10-spokers are the best looking of the bunch. That said, I'm leaning away from the sport trim now just to avoid the 5 spoke rims. Also, I could save a few bucks by doing so and spend it to get some upgrades even sooner. Nice.

Even if I like the 10 spoke wheels more, the difference between the blackened chrome on the sport vs the normal chrome is more important to me than the difference between the wheels. Plus, some other people like the 5 spokes because they're more of a gunmetal color than pictures suggest, making them match the blackened chrome.

Definitly get a ton of looks due to the gunmetal rims, its the first thing people look at.

That being said, each to their own but here in Canada i am 90% sure you do not get the LSD or adaptive suspension unless you get the top trim 3.3 sport, also i agree the dark chrome front grill is a huge difference

Where is the video link? All I saw was a still pic

Here's that video. The camera work is nauseating and it's not much of a review, but the "review" differentiates itself with some interesting tidbits of info from a Genesis salesman and the first impression perspectives of young carheads.

... and that's why you don't buy a demo.

I'm with ya on that. I definitely like the dark chrome over the regular, it looks much meaner. That said, I've been planning on spraying on some removable metallic black (eg plasti-dip) over the chrome anyway for the more aggressive look. However, the problem I'm expecting is that clear plastic rectangle right dead center on the grill. Not sure how you could spray the grill that's lying behind that plate, and I don't see anyway to remove the clear plastic piece either... So my idea is probably impossible.

Genesis US posted a news brief about the trims we'll get here. All V6 G70's have the multi-plate LSD. The sport trim, in addition to cosmetic changes and those rims, gets the adaptive suspension.

Yeah, the 10 spoke rims are growing on me, but I want adaptive suspension so sport it'll be.

There is no grill behind the plastic - the portion that looks like the grill is actually printed on the plastic so its all one piece.

Yeah...you beat me to it. They did an excellent job making it seem like just a clear plastic part over the grill. That part protects all the laser/camera stuff for the autonomous goodies.

Woah... I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. Perhaps this will work after all.

The printed-on grill has always seemed like a sort of cheesy solution to me. I wonder if the image will wear off over time. The front of the car takes all the abuse as it zooms down the road. Sand, salt, pebbles, etc. will eventually take their toll up there, I fear. Seems like they should have been able to come up with a better solution. I've never been crazy about it aesthetically. It looks like a license plate holder. If the plate itself is just a sheet of plastic with a picture of the grill on it, maybe it won't be too expensive to replace if it gets beaten up. If the image is printed on the back, that would also help, although the plastic could still get beaten up. Maybe it's some sort of gorilla glass that resists scratches and is tough enough to take a kicked up stone and survive. The illusion of its looking like the grill behind it may not hold up very well over time if the image wears or the substrate dulls, scratches, or cracks. We'll see eventually, I guess. Current owners: Does it seem to be of pretty sturdy material? Is the image on the back or front of the forward-facing surface?

No car's perfect and in the grand scheme of things, this is a pretty minor issue. But it still might be an issue, at least for those who like to keep their ride looking pristine.

Nobody said it was printed on.

The grill is inside the clear plastic.

The plastic shield actually has the grill molded into it so that it doesn't look 2-dimensional. The plastic is quite thick, too.

Interesting solution- many manufacturers put the autonomous goodies inside the emblem which is usually smack in the middle of the grill. Genesis puts the logo on the body above the grill so i guess they came up with this instead.

It seems there is/was a Genesis G70 event going on in Washington D.C., so everyone keep an eye out for more reviews or details on release and pricing!

You make several god points. I think the major flaw in my reasoning was that I wasn't thinking specifically about the Korean market, which the article addressed. Thanks for the corrective input.

No worries!

Like I had stated, thought the article was poorly researched and a bit misleading.

Case in point - August Sales (Korea):

Genesis - 4,525 (6th)

MB - 3,019 (7th)
BMW - 2,383 (8th)
Audi - 2,098 (9th)

So, Genesis outsold each of the Germans; MB and BMW sales have dropped a bit as Audi has started to recover from the diesel scandal, along w/ BMW starting to feel the effects of the diesel 5ers going up in flames.

G80 - 2,982
K9 - 1,204
G70 - 1,138
Stinger - 437
EQ900 - 405

As can be seen, G70 sales recovered to over 1k/month (stupid for the writer of that article to come to any sort of conclusion based on the prior month's sales as sales can vary widely month to month.

Now, certainly, that's not to say that the Korean brands (whether it be Hyundai, Kia or Genesis) aren't feeling pressure from the European imports - as imports continue to grow in popularity and in particular, the German lux brands (which is not any different from most other markets).

In Japan, Lexus sold 3,019 last month w/ the NX being the only model to sell over 500 units w/ sales of 571.
