  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Lighting

Like OBCT, I am ready to change lights, mainly under door lights, foot well lights, glove box, and trunk. My criteria is for consistant color with present overheads and reasonable brightness improvements. While this site offered really good data, it suddenly went blank. It also has given me a headache (I read each one and good data has been provided including sources but I am still confused). It would be nice to have some recommended bulbs and sources in one location a some definitions, ie, is a 1 LED one watt and an 8 LED eight watts, or what? Also, before I grab a screw driver and attack a lens removal effort, what is the best way to access each light.

I've been wondering also. Do you just stick a screwdriver along the edge of the lens and pry them off?

Yes, the courtesy/puddle/underdoor/whateveryoucallthem lenses are pried out with a non-marring, flat-blade screwdriver or tool (ideally wide, plastic, and with a thin angled edge). The textured surface is somewhat soft and will mar easily, although unless you're looking at the bottom of the door, you won't notice.

I pulled the light boxes out of the trunk, but couldn't get at the bulbs. Anyone have a trick to move the tabs in the light boxes to get at the bulb?

I too pulled the light boxes from the trunk, but how do you get to the bulb
for replacement.

Does anyone have a recommendation on FRONT turn signal LED replacements for the Sedan?

Thanks much GS300rich! I did purchase the LED bulbs and installed. Can you tell me how to take out the floor/foot light in the passenger side? It was pretty easy to take out the bulb in the driver's side but not the passenger side. I pulled it really hard but no luck.

Okay, I'm having a problem with my left plate bulb LED replacements (37mm festoon). After a few weeks, they begin to strobe like, well, a strobe light before ultimately failing. Four different bulbs from three different sources. I've tried both the 3- and -6 LED SMD variety. I can tell they're going bad because I can see the strobing in the rear camera when reversing at night. It's only the left...the right plate bulb works like a champ. Swapping the bulbs confirms it's a bulb problem, not a socket problem.

Before I go and buy an expensive Japanese bulb to have that burn out too, I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts as to whether it might be a problem other than bad quality bulbs.

Also, if anyone has any recommendations for non-LED bulbs appropriate for the license plate that provide a cooler white light than the stock incandescents, I'd appreciate them. Thanks.

I have experienced the strobe effect before in other cars also. From my experience my problem was caused by poor quality LED's. The LED's I installed in the Genny were about $10/piece for the license plate, but still look great and no problems. I would recommend spending more money on a higher quality LED.

If you're looking for a "super white" look without using LED's try something like this:

I've used the superwhite NON LED's for my reverse lights in other cars, and have seen a large improvement not just looks, but brighter and clearer light. This is what I recommend to people when I do a dark tint on their vehicle such as 5% so they don't hit something when backing up at night.

I didn't mess with trying to pull out the passerger footwell bulb directly...can't get a good enough grip on it, even if you remove that blue tined cover on the bulb. I removed the three screws right below the bottom edge of the glove compartment, pulled down the plastic panel that the screws held in place, and then twisted and pulled the whole socket out the back of the plastic panel. After doing this, it's a piece of cake to replace the bulb and then put everything back together.

How about the vanity lights? It seems like they are welded into the headliner. I can't tell how they're installed. Do I just pull out the clear plastic lens, or the entire housing?

I had the same problem. It really amazed me how much difference the pull pressure requirements were between these lights and the under door puddle lights. I used this method, which was easy but has an inherent danger. I took standard Sears pliers and, using the previously removed bulbs as a test fixture, gauged the amount of pressure needed to supply a good hold on the bulb without breaking the bulb. It does not take much pressure at all to provide a good grip. Then I tried it on the car light and the bulb came out easily. Just apply slight closing pressure and pull down. Do not break the bulb as other have said this is a problem.

This last picture I have the OEM bulb in the left side and the 6 LED cool white bulb in the right side:

This is what I ended up doing after trying a few. Thanks for the info.

I realize this is an old post, but there is some excellent info here. I just wanted to add an endorsment of the remove the 3 screws and pop the connector out the back method. But if you do want to try the pull the bulb out the front method I recommend pulling the MEM fuse beforehand as this will remove power to all of the lights that can come on with the door open. If you do break the bulb make sure the fuse is pulled vacuum up the broken pieces then pop out the connector from the panel grip the center filiment with your pliers and pull it out.

I guess I must be out of touch with the times when I comes to lighting. The first thing I noticed with my new Genesis at night was the harsh interior overhead courtesy lights. Maybe I just need to give it some time to get used to the effect because it's very different than the warm inviting interior lighting that my old car had. Yet everyone on this thread wants to replace any warm incandescent lighting with cold LED lighting. Because I find the OEM overhead courtesy lights to be very cold and unflattering, I would like to replace them with incandescents to make skin tones more lifelike and to warm up the entire interior. I have the cashmere interior which has kind of a pale washed-out looking color, and the cold LED courtesy lighting makes it even more washed out looking. Am I missing something here? Why does everyone on this thread except for me seem to prefer the cool color tones? I realize that these lights actually show "truer" colors, but I still find them harsh and uninviting compared to warmth of incandescent lamps.

Exlonghorn,
Vanity lights are removed by pulling down the edge closest to the door. Once that side is dropped, you can pull out the entire housing and bulb is readily accessible. You have to use a flat edge to get it started.

So is there an "official" list of LEDs needed to replace incandescent bulbs? I have a 2012 3.8L w/ prem/tech pkg and would like to just make one order to replace them all instead of piecemeal.
