BMW got hit especially hard...
I'm glad that it is indeed the case. (And yes, I gave up a BMW myself.)
BMWs are not luxury cars, they are performance cars - but due to the high price tag, BMW is pitching its cars toward people who don't even know what that 50/50 weight balance is supposed to mean. There are some BMW drivers out there who don't even know what that "5-speed auto" or "6-speed auto" is supposed to mean. Basically, they pay for technology they don't even know about, much less actually use.
But then, as I am in SoCal, where having the right hood ornament is the only thing that matters, that roundel still carries a huge amount of respect.
And therein lies the problem. BMW AG and BMW North America both seem to act as if their customers are disposable. They figure that there still are lots of rich lemmings out there who can't wait to get their hands on BMW vehicles. That's especially true here in SoCal. And BMW dealerships have the attitude to show for it. Even on national/international level, BMW's "independent spirit" really means the guts to support various organizations out there that are NOT in the best interests of their customers (and laugh off any/all customer complaints to the contrary). And I'm NOT talking about Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, possibly the ONLY good outside cause BMW supports (alongside dozens of bad ones).
I don't like buying from car companies that seem to consider me a disposable customer. Ford seemed to treat me that way too, because my Ford was the loss-leader Contour rather than the cash cow F-Series. Sure, Ford now makes nicer cars like the Fusion, but after my Contour experience, I won't even look at the Fusion.
And to really think about it, the 7-series sucks, the 5-series isn't as much of a standout that it once was, and the 3-series is still the best in class but the likes of
Infiniti G are getting very close for MUCH less. And there are those "SAVs" - the X6, in particular, is a total joke.
BMW really needs to lose a huge chunk of its reputation/market share. If I must have some obscenely overpriced German hood ornament on my car again, I'll make sure to buy a Mercedes or an Audi. I can't stand any more of BMW's "we never compromise" or "our cars never need tire rotation" crap.
