  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai Genesis: post up your compliments/stares/double takes thread

A couple of weeks ago, some guys pulled next to me at a red light and motioned to roll down my window. They asked what kind of car it was, and thought it was either a Bentley or an Aston Martin. I proudly told them it was a Hyundai Genesis.

Any more, I just say it's a Genesis. I don't hear many people say, it's a Toyota Lexus.....

Did you get that look of misbelief or disgust :D. I have had both. Some people when they hear the word "Hyundai", sends them into some weird flashback, back in the 80's :D

Today, just sitting in my 2016 Genny, NY Grey, a guy walks up to drivers window and says, " This is one beautiful car. I love the color and the style, wish I could afford one". He drove away in a Kia.

I've only done this a couple of times, but all the reactions I've had so far have been positive. I think it's good to challenge their preconceived notions of what a Hyundai can be. I've also never had someone driving a luxury brand ask me, so I don't know how they'd react.

I also think that simply calling it a "Genesis" seems kind of snarky, since it's already written on the back. Unless they approached from the front, I assume they've already read the name and don't recognize it.

And you would say the same about Lexus and Infinity???

Had yet another "gas station approach" yesterday here in FL from a guy in a rented Chevy....he asked me if I was as happy with my G2 as he was with his.ba k in CT.......I was!

To be fair, a Lexus or Infiniti is a Lexus or Infiniti. Ours (through 2017 at least) are actually Hyundai's. Nothing to be ashamed of that's just what it is.

Hyundai did such a good job with this car that most people don't know, or even believe it's in any way associated with the brand. Plenty of my friends are dumbfounded over the fact that it's even a Hyundai. Hyundai are known for their affordable econo, FWD cars that get to A&B safe and slowly.

I just tell people, "it's a Genesis" and if I'm feeling playful, Bentley or Aston :D

So... I'm at the local grocery store today. I'm pulling out of my parking space, and about 4 rows over, and at the very end of the row facing the street, I see a very nice white car with the winged badge on the back. It looked like it may have been modded, so I decided to swing by. Looking at the trunk, I'm pretty sure it's not a G2, so... must be a G1...

Nope - It's actually a Bentley!

I laughed pretty hard on that one. :D

I have had my silver V6 AWD Genesis for just over week but not driven it much due to the holidays and work being quiet. Yesterday though I did my first real highway miles for a 100 mile business trip.

This is where I overtook a black Maserati Ghibli that was cruising in the middle lane of the I294. After I passed him, I pulled back into the middle lane and went back to cruising around 70. This is where things got weird. The Maserati slowly overtook me and pulled back in front of me. He then started accelerating really hard then backing off to let me catch up. He did that a few times until I decided to hit the gas with him a couple of times to stay with him, which the Genesis did really well. I then took my exit and left him.

I don't know whether he thought I was another Maserati (the rear of the Ghibli is similar to the Genesis) or something else exotic but this is the first time someone with a far more expensive car than mine has tried to play games with me even though I have driven BMWs, Audis and Mercedes.

Before and after lol. Local Genesis owner took a pic and sent it to me after a very quick meet and greet.

Expensive yes. Worth it (beyond the motor), nah. I test drove two...literally the same switch gear, nav, etc. as my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. :D for the price, definitely a weird choice.

I had a little kid a couple of weeks ago stare and point as I drove by. I get a lot of children gaping at my car. Children don't seem to hide their awe like adults do.

Yesterday, I passed a vehicle on the highway (Dodge Avenger maybe, not a Maserati), then moved back into the right lane. After a few minutes, he accelerated up to me pretty aggressively (it actually alarmed me at first), road my butt for about a minute, then backed off. I didn't cut him off or anything, so I an only assume he was trying to figure out what kind of car it was.

A few weeks ago we stopped by our local Ruth's Chris to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I decided to Valet Park the car.

As I dropped the car off, the Valet said "Sir... you don't need a ticket.. I'll put it up front in the VIP"

OK! :D

I saw a Santiago Silver Genesis a couple of weeks ago with the older (probably 50s) couple in it. The wife was just staring at my car from the passenger seat.

I've had the car for 3 months now, and finally got my first 2 compliments in the same day. First was in the morning after pulling into my office parking lot, an elderly gentleman in his 60s asked if I was driving a Bentley. I kinda laughed and told him "Genesis". He works at a law firm in my building, and he drives an E500, so he's not completely clueless.

Later that day a younger guy standing outside the 7-11 I pulled into shouted out "Damn dog, dat's dat whip!" when I got out of the car. He was smiling and looked impressed, so I'll take it as a solid compliment.

In other news, I drove a 2016 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport while my wife's QX60 was in service. That car is fast as the devil, but I still felt very satisfied when I returned to my Genesis. Maybe I'm getting older, but I appreciate the more luxurious interior and supple ride than just going WOT at every chance.

As I was leaving the mall, there was a younger guy behind me with his girlfriend and honking at me. At first I ignored it because I thought it was someone farther back since the mall was packed and they were in a hurry. Looked through my rear view mirror again and the dude was giving me a bunch of thumbs up, even went as far as sticking both arms out his window to make sure I saw him. His girlfriend was just shaking her head and looked almost embarassed. So I gave it a quick rev and he nearly jumped out of his seat in excitement lol!

My recent stares/compliments were...weird, and at gas stations. On 3 separate occasions, these "thugs" who sag their pants down to their knees were giving me compliments. Asking what the car was, how much it was, etc. Felt weird, so I said it was a Honda and I stuck badges and a body kit on it. This one guy challenged me and said, "oh dats a Honda? I got wun mang and it look nuthin like dat." So he walked away and was loitering elsewhere...got to be careful with these people following you home...call me overly cautious.

I've had a number of folks want to know what kind of car I was driving. A number of them asking if it was a Bentley, others asking if it was a high end sports car. Whatever, they liked the 2G Genesis even if they did not know what it was. Its a awesome car IMHO. Regards.

Had a guy next to me in a brand new Altima beep at me today while sitting at a light, heading in to work. Put down the window and he asked me if my car was RWD. I informed him AWD and he was surprised; "Reeaallllllyyyy????" I then filled him in on the motor and drive options plus those of the G90.

He said "That's a really sharp looking car. I really like how that looks. How much was it? About 50?" I let him know it was the top trim and feature of the V6 and that the sticker on it was 53, but that compared to an equally equipped 5, A6 or E350 it was a full 20k cheaper. He seemed surprised and impressed.

First time anyone has talked me up while driving. Often get remarks and comments while stopped for gas or whatever. Kinda cool to experience that.... though not nearly as cool as the guy who ended up plowing into the car backing out in front of him cause he was too busy gawking. :D
