  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm a little surprised we haven't seen a comparison test between the G70 and new 3 series

Today I had a middle aged lady in an A4 try to skip ahead of me at a light when the road ahead was closed down to one lane due to construction. No one behind me! She just wanted to prove something but it was weird seeing someone from that demographic try it. It’s nice knowing which cars you can easily pull on vs the ones that might be better left alone like the m340i

I was leaving Galveston late after an eventful summer night and someone tried that on me with a V6 Camry. Person was driving like a teenager, weaving and bopping, tailgating me when I had nowhere to go. So right before the road turned into I-45, we both lined up at a stoplight, side-by-side. I-45 basically starts (or ends, depending on your point of view) in Galveston. I switched into sport-mode and let that 420hp V8 run. I wasn't going to keep racing; once we were on 45 I moved to the far right lane and set my cruise for 75. Didn't matter though; that person stayed several car-lengths behind me from that point on.

That may be, but the BMW also has more power, and they historically underrate their hp numbers, so it's probably more like 400+.

Exactly.. and these Mag's need to start putting that in their title for the comparison because it's not as even as one would think. They need to highlight this and at least point out..

I agree with both of you. I was thinking of getting the M340i xdrive prior to my G70 3.3 AWD but I ran into 2 issues 1) At the time the car wasn't even out and the order would take up to 4 months to receive the car. That wouldn't work for me because I needed it sooner than that. 2) The HUGE price difference. I'm still happy I went with the G70 because of that and also I hate the area near the gear shifter on the m340i. I feel like it seems so plain.

Here is a G70 3.3 AWD on dyno
HP: 324.2 TQ: 368.9. With the losses, I think Genesis is under rating as well.

BMW m340 numbers: HP 338, TQ: 381. If both numbers are to be true, then I still think the G70 should be much closer.

I'm not sure what tires the m340 runs thought.

Does the G70 build boost during launch? I recall reading somewhere that it doesn't, while the 3 series does.

It does...but you cannot launch higher than 2,200 rpm. Sucks. That’s with LC. Without is 2k rpm.

That limitation goes away with the burn out switch (aka brake snip).

I wonder what the m340 does then

I think TheStraightPipes spoke about building boost while launching in the M340i, I thought they said something like 3-4 psi during launch. I could just be making stuff up, though. *Shrug*

Either way, chalk me up for the BMW being faster for both reasons as well (ie harder launch control, and an underrated engine).

That was my baseline Dyno, I was pleasantly surprised since it's AWD, especially with that torque. I am hoping I'll be above 400whp when I run it again. I am only waiting for Mishimoto to come out with their new intercooler then I'll run it again on the same Dyno. If I'm not wow'd by the numbers, I may give WMI a shot.

The youtube video I linked was of your actual car???? That's crazy! Thank you for posting it because now we have real life numbers.

I think you're right; I do remember straight pipes saying something along those lines but I'm too lazy to go back and verify.

P.S. is your car colour the Siberian Ice? It looks really nice. I got the Mallarica blue and I sometimes wonder if I made the right decision....

Yup, my car (Santiago Silver). No problem! I like documenting my progress.

I think the Mallorca Blue looks really good, but I was dead set on silver for mine. Flew 3/4 across the country like a fool just to get it.

Speaking of the M340i. BMW Bros be like....

Haha.

Edit: Just wanted to use that .jpg for no reason other than it's funny.

Anyone know Korean?

That looked like a fun race! Too bad they didn't also include a 1/4 mile race, as well. Even so it probably doesn't matter, the M340i was simply faster than the G70 is basically every way.

Nice find.

damn that looked fun. lucky day job.

could be a driver difference as well, but the M340i does seem to have more pace which aligns with published test data.

pretty cool that out of the box factory sport sedans, not even the high-po specs like M3, can lap like this and stay in one piece and without overheating!

Looks like the G70 is AWD and the M340 RWD. As well, the G70 has all season tires and the M340 has PS4s. Would be a nice comparison of they were the same spec. The M340 would still take it but they would certainly be even closer.

I was surprised that the M340 didn't pull away harder on the straights but that seems to be inline with Car and Drivers 30-50 and 50-70 stats that show the two cars are closer that we would think.

Honestly it didn't look that close. It looks like the M340 has a crap-ton more torque. I know the G70 is rated as having more, but the M340 looks like it has a pretty good bit more power and torque.
