Navigation system software update

I have had problems with my navigation unit.

When I purchased my 4.6 Genesis with Tech package it included 1 year of XM for free. As long as my XM subscription was active, I had no problems with any of the NAVI features. At some point this winter, I started having problems with my voice command feature.

Sometimes I would press the button to give a command, and it wouldn't respond at all. Other times it would pause for a long time, tell me to wait, and then, 10-15 seconds later give me a beep. It would take the command, but the radio wouldn't come back for 30 seconds to 1.5 minutes. Sometimes the whole system would hang up, none of the buttons working at all on the system until I stopped and restarted the engine.

I took it to the shop, where they did their best, but could find nothing. It seemed a little ridiculous to make a big deal about this minor feature, so I just live with it, but it grated on me. The nav/av system for this car cost me $4000, I thought it should work flawlessly.

A few weeks ago, XM offered a free week of access and when my XM service reactivated, everything worked again! Woo-hoo! No delays in voice commands, no hang ups everything was perfect. When the week ended, and the delays and system hangs came back, I gave serious thought to subscribing to XM on one of their resubscribe offers, just to get my navigation working 100% again.

Then, last week my dealership called me up to offer me a free "Navigation Upgrade". They told me it was updating my maps, but it's on a series of 4 DVDs and the update takes hours. Clearly, it's more than simply maps. When I got the car back yesterday, the NAVI operated perfectly, with no lag. If you are having problems with your Navigation system, call your dealership and ask if your car is eligible for Campaign #P06, it fixed my problems.

Mike,

Thanks for sharing this information about Nav update for 2009 models. Do you know of an update for 2010 models?

Mike.

Yep - it worked. I'm out of the country right now, but when I read this I let my wife know. She called our dealer and mentioned campaign #PO6, and he confirmed that our 2009 Genesis 4.6 is eligible. He said it takes roughly 3.5 hours to complete, so she scheduled an appointment for two weeks from now to have it done. Thanks for the money saving tip!:)

just had the update completed today, I didn't have time to play with it yet but it does wipe your presets and phone book.

nice that this was free.

Thanks guys! I've watched from afar to see what all you trail blazers would get done and sure enough!!!! I've made the '#P06' call and my dealer has it ordered.

Been a long time since I've posted, but I've watched all of the posts. Congrats to all new owners. Welcome to the club.

A good way to "delight" your customers is to exclude from the update the first purchasers of the car and those who bought at the end of the model year. So now you have people who bought in the middle of the 2009 MY and 2010 owners who have the 2010 update. It makes no sense.

Just called my dealer(ship)
They want $275.00 for the Navi map update.

I got a call from my dealer last week offering the complimentary upgrade. I took it in Friday - the update failed. There are 4 DVDs that they have to load to the HDD. Apparently they are having some problems - it crashed after in the middle of the third DVD and they are going to have to start over. I'm taking it back tomorrow. I'll keep you posted on how things go.

Does the Nav update add pronunciation of street names, or is strictly map and POI updates?

Sounds like class action time to me. I am one of the ones in that lovely middle period where the promotion does not apply. Yet at purchase I was promised this update because it was only a month or two away. That was June '09. Never trust a Hyundai salesperson....

I am willing to sign on to the suit... Hyundai is wrong... They should stand behind their product. How can they install an outdated software... Then offer the update to some, but not others.. We all bought their product(NEW)

I have nothing to do with the company, but.. The early 2009 sedans are getting a free map update with their Nav software upgrade..(clearly trying to avoid a recall for something with the nav), the 2010's are just getting a map update... so are late year 2009's already running the later nav software?

Remember late 2009's had a couple of changes, one having to do with crash impact testing results as I recall.

So, if Hyundai is offering a free map update to get customers to come in for the Nav update (to avoid some type of recall.) it might make sense...

still seems nuts to offer it to part of a model year...

Not a chance on text to speech unless they completely overhaul the DIS interface, which you're not going to see on this generation Genesis.

Perhaps by 2012 or 2013 they'll have a new layout with T2S, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is completely idiotic, and as long as Hyundai stays in bed with Map&Soft, there are going to be problems.

I spoke with my dealer's service manager, who has the new set of DVDs and said he'd "work with me" if Hyundai wasn't willing to qualify my '10 for the #P06 campaign, which only applies to the '09 model.

Funny thing is I've already had a navigation update applied to my '10 (I complained immediately when I discovered that I had '07 map data shortly after taking delivery of the car) which brought me up to '08. This update is supposed to bring the map data up to '09, and they're not "offering" it to the '10 owners.

I was directed to contact Hyundai Consumer Affairs to file a complaint and see if I could get any traction from them; my answer from the representative who was more interested in giving me the case number and his employee ID than solving the issue was "I'm reading here in my notes that this update is only for the 2009 models and may cause the 2010 model DIS systems to go black if installation is attempted. We suggest you tell your customers to avoid this update until something further is worked out."

I'm pretty sure there are no physical differences to the DIS head unit from 2009 to 2010, and my dealer's service manager is also convinced that this will not be a problem on my 2010, and has placed a call into his district service tech specialist prior to my car visiting the dealership this coming Tuesday, 8/31.

I'll report back on my findings/results and how well they "worked with me."

I took it back on Tuesday, got another loaner (an Elantra Tour - sweet!!). This time it worked - presto, new maps. I'm not sure what else the update did - haven't really noticed yet.

A happy ending: Nav software update

I purchased a 2010 4.6 Sedan w. Tech on July 13, 2010 and found out about the impending Nav update (10-BE-004-2) a few days later. I contacted Hyundai Customer Care and said that I expected a free update based on the short time I had owned the car. The customer rep gave me a case number and was vaguely supportive but said to contact my dealer. At my dealer, I was referred to the Service Director on August 9. He pointed to an unopened package that had just arrived on his bookshelf, but had not seen the TSB until I gave it to him. He is an energetic and customer-oriented person and said he needed to check with Hyundai and his management about the update and cost. The next day he called to say that the TSB did not cover "my VIN range" and that the update would not apply. I was skeptical and he agreed to double-check his info. The next day he called back and said he had been given some bad info by the Hyundai dealer support staff, and that indeed the update did apply to my Genesis.
The good news is that the update was successfully installed on Aug 17 at N/C. The update does make a difference. I was happy to discover that a couple of Nav-suggested suicidal and illegal turns in my hometown of Wash DC (in the original map version) had been eliminated by the update. This increases my confidence in trusting Nav recommendations in unfamiliar areas. Bottom line: the process worked, but it should not be this hard!

I have been working on the navi issue for many months. Each attempt ends in frustration with no results. Last week, I called the President's office. (Customer service didn't have his name or phone number)! I got an assistant who basically told me that MAYBE the version for my vehicle would be ready in September. This has been going on month after month afetr moneth and there is still no end in sight.

My vehicle was manufactured in February of 2009 and seems to have fallen into a crack.

I asked why Map N Soft has my VIN listed as being usable with the new update and Hyundai says no it isn't. Typical response: "We can't help what they do or post".

Does anyone else have a build date of February 2009 who has had an update successfully installed?

This truly sucks.......:(

The build date of my car is Feb. 18 , 2010 and I have the 2009 map .I have the Tech Package DIS system. The dealer had me call Map&Soft. Map&Soft said call the dealer and tell them the 2009 update is also for the 2010 and that there is no disc that they send out to the customer.
I called Hyundai and had both the dealer and Hyundai on the phone to no avail. I told them that the update says April 2010 and my map is a 2009 version. It make no sense that they are telling me the update is not for my car and there is no update for my car. The dealer is now saying he is going to contact someone else at Hyundai. I told the dealer there seems to be allot of confusion over this update and when they get it all figured out or Hyundai puts out a bullitin that includes my car give me a call. I also gave them all the information that I had read on this forum in regard to the update.
The dealer has the disc for the update but says my VIN does not come up and it probably does not for the free update that applies to some of the 2009s and I think that is where the problem lies.

I, too, am being greeted by frustration and ignorance
Hyundai corporate customer support has a special genesis team to handle affairs dealing with just the genesis. I phoned them after speaking with the service manager at my local dealership.
I have been getting he run around ever since.
I don't understand these people; I can't say they're the only ones, as I see many other corporations taking this approach: they think we're STUPID and try to please us as fools by repeating a prepared script/ "We're still researching this, out of my hands, do you mind if I place you on hold for one minute? we want to help, we're on your side, sorry that's not possible, out of my control, my manager is not available can I help you? repeating the same story over and over and over and over and over and over - even though they have notes with timestamps etc."

I know all about picking my battles. I am convinced that today's U.S customer service is based on lies and deceit. Tell them what they want to hear so they'll go away, and hopefully we won't have to talk to them again.

Per TSB 10-BE-004-2 (available on hmaservice.com with the first page attached here), the current update can be applied on 2009's and 2010's with the DIS system.

However, note that the 2010's out the door have more recent maps (2009) than the 2009's do (2008). IIRC, there was a directive for dealers to apply the 2009 maps to any sold or dealer stock 2010's that shipped before the 2009 map data was applied at the factory. I'm not sure whether the 2010 database (perhaps the date, but maybe not the data) is different from what was updated on the 2010 models.

And as long as you have a 2009 database on a 2010 model, the current upgrade won't be free. The free promotion is for only selected VINs of the 2009 model. I have an inquiry into Hyundai about the rest of the 2009's. My hope is that they're staggering the VINs to avoid everyone swamping the dealers at once.
