Navigation system software update

Excellent!! I just took the Genesis out of storage yesterday (4/12) and I noticed my XM radio and Nav Traffic still works perfectly! Hope XM just forgot about me since my trial period expired during storage.

Purchased car Jan 09 (build date 12/08) and I'm aware that the 1 year XM subcription expires 1 year after the dealership receives the car.

Hope it stays this way, but I'm not holding my breath.

Also, I still receive XM mail trying to have me resubscribe since the letter states my trail period has expired. Started receiving this mail about 3 months ago or so.

Sorry to hear it, but I think you're being too picky or something else is going on. To rely on Google and memorizing directions instead of using the navi is totally insane, not to mention ridiculous.

I didn't list every problem that I have had but only highlighted those that were glaring.

Nice to know that I'm insane. That answers every problem that I've ever had. Thanks.

Scott,

Before you do anything, check the Radio ID on the resubscribe letter, and compare it to the Radio ID in your Radio Channel 0. If it is the same, pay the bill, as they will cut you off. If the ID's are different, you may as well just sit tight, as they think you have one radio whereas you have a different radio.
Mine were different, but I was not smart enough to keep my mouth shut, and told them that the two ID's were different.

Lastly, when you pay them, DO NOT PAY BY CREDIT CARD! If you do, they resubscribe you after one year, without you knowing anything about it. (I.E., If you just think you can let the subscription "run out", wrong - they resubscribe you automaticly, plus other problems could happen - read www.ripoffreport.com for more information.). I paid them by Money Order, and sent it where I could track it by USPS, plus Return Recept Requested.
The trouble with XM and Serious is that the left had does not know what the right had is doing. I still get calls from them to renew. Dumb.

I don't have any of the mail to check the radio ID since I just throw it out when I receive it. I have no plans on renewing since XM radio's quality sound is horrible, flat, compressed etc.

Plus I don't want to pay for something year round on a car that I do not drive year round.

The Genesis nav system has been the biggest disappointment for me, too. I was accused of being "silly" even though I said I wouldn't consider buying another Hyundai if the Genesis failed to retain its resale value, and, oh yeah, I'm disappointed with the nav system.

You're "insane" and I'm "silly" because we're both less than thrilled with the nav system, like many others who've posted on this site. I have a long list of things I don't like about the Genesis nav system, including, but not limited to:

Outdated maps that don't find addresses when you search by address, but DO find locations when you put in the phone number.
The nav system's insistence on indicating a "turn" (the arrow in the bottom right shows distance to "turn") even when the direction is, in fact, to continue on the current road. Garmins do that and I'm baffled as to why the system says a "turn" is coming up, when, in fact, you continue on the road you're on. (This happens very frequently on non-Interstate routing).
Generic icons for things like gas stations, restaurants, etc. Other nav systems actually have the recognizable logo of the establishment for larger chains (i.e., he McDonalds restaurant has a McDonalds logo; a Hilton hotel has the Hilton logo).
The time-to-location is based not on average (or a calculation of current vehicle speed and remaining distance at posted speed limits), but on whatever values you put in for average speeds. The vehicle knows how fast you're going. This is laziness by the nav system designers (other GPS manufacturers do it).
The time-to-location estimate can't be toggled to estimated time at location.
If you cross into another state and then do a search for a location, you have to tell the system to now look in that state. Again, it "knows" where you are.
At least for me, the brightness setting in the middle is too bright at night and too dim during the day. Which obviously means if I set it to dimmer for night, then it's way too dim for day. And if I set it brighter for day, then it's way too bright for night.

I bought a Magellan GPS (with free lifetime traffic) so when the XM subscription expires (and thus the traffic updates), I'll have a system I can rely on. Because I'm not paying Hyundai $200.

Hey Kev,

Don't hold back. We want to know how you really feel. ;) :D :welcome:

(Just pulling your leg)

I was at my dealer (Antwerpen Hyundai, Clarksville, MD) for an oil change and a wheel alignment and decided to check on the availability of the map update. They said they would order it today and it arrive sometime next week.

Hi Kev;
Let me assure you you are not alone nor are you insane, silly, etc.
The NAV system is the most bizzare that I have ever seen and I have used them in BMW's , Lexus, Merc, Porsche, and Infiniti's. The GM nav units are a disaster-really screwed up, but, then again, what can you expect with the government running the company.
The one thing that is better is that when you fail to follow the direction given, it doesn't give you a load of crap ( make a U turn as soon as possible, etc.) but calculates from the point you are.
My list is equally as long as yours but my biggest two gripes are the lack of accurate map info (14 miles out of the way, etc.) and the fact the damn thing wants the street name before the city/town!! Do you know how many towns have a Main Street in NY??!!
The latest map update does nothing to correct the process issues and the jury is still out on the accuracy of the map data.
It's ironic that the guy who says you are nit-picking (his word, not mine) has only had the car two months and fails to respond to my inquiry regarding his car info.
What is even more ironic is that a $200 Nuvi from Garmin is much easier to use, provides more information (lane positions, speed limits, etc.). This is a classic case of company arrogance shared by GM and many others- of course they can design a Nav system by themselves; they made a car didn't they? Once again, do what you do best and let others do what they do best.
Thanks for the opportunity to pontificate.

This navi issue is completely out of hand. My 2009 genesis was manufactured in February of 2009, and the updates that are available today for 2009 will not work in my car. (You insert your vin to check). MapNSoft saiys they released the new maps for my model, (my vin says it is available and to contact Hyundai), but Genesis has not blessed it. So, the 2010's got a new upgrade, some of the 2009's got a new upgrade, and my model has nada!

Worse, ever try to call Genesis customer service lately? The wait can be 15-20 minutes before you get a human. I wonder if they let employees go? After you get customer service, (after saying "something else") you still need to be transferred to a "Genesis Technical" person to ask a navi question. That is also an excercize in futility, as these folks don't know anything about the navi upgrades.

What has happened to one of the best, new innovative vehicles, and those of us who took a chance to acquire it?
By the time they release my navi update, my lease will be up!! Poor, poor, poor customer relations.:(:(:(

No, not Ironic, just a case of not having been back on the forum since I posted last. Now, to address your question. My vehicle build is July 2008 and has the original Nav data. Yes, Tech package with the 3.8 V6. It was a dealer demo that I picked up in Feb '10 with 6k miles on it. I use the GPS all the time. I have mounted two Garmins simultaneously and run routes on all 3 and the Genny's system has not given me anything out of line. My Garmins do not have the lane guidance feature (750 and 780 Nuvi), but they route as well. I live in the suburbs of Detroit and have driven the car through Ohio (Dayton and Cincinnati) with similar results.

I am sorry that some didn't like my expression of Nitpick, but hey, I can give you 20 items that I don't like about my two Garmins. I hadn't bought one of the newer slimmer Garmins because they were no better and in some instances worse. OEM anything in the car business means expensive. You pay nearly $80 to $90 bucks for map updates from the Garmins/Magellans/TomTom's of the world so $200 from an OEM is not out of line on a system that cost you probably at least $2000 of the $4000 Tech Package price.

As others state, your mileage may (and for many of you it seems has) vary. And as I stated before, I agree that the interface is not standard by any means (ie the input of an address prior to the city and state) but I have gotten used to it. On my Garmins if you don't put the address in correctly as it is stored in the unit you will get hits for every other local in your state other than the one you are looking for as well. The Main St is extreme, but I know true and in that instance frustrating!!

Just got an e-mail from my dealer's service mgr with this message: "I received official notice from Hyundai that the 2010 north America map updates are now available from mapnsoft.com for the 2009 genesis. According to the website these are available to order through the dealership only at this point. I can acquire these for you at the price of 199 plus shipping and tax. According to the website the procedure takes approx 200 minutes to complete. Please let me know if you would like these disks ordered for you."

What's surprising about this (other than the interminable wait) is that I'll be buying my own set of disks for $200 and installing them myself, rather than paying a fee to the dealer to use their disks and cover their labor to install them. As long as I'm willing to pay $200 for the upgrade, I guess the particulars of the transaction don't really matter. I'm fearful that I'll lose all user-defined settings again, though, which is what happened when the dealer executed a software update TSB a year or so ago.

Sure hope the mapnsoft update is significant!

Folks, I just concluded a call with Hyundai Genesis. After 35 minutes, start to finsih, I was informed that the navi update for 2009 (mine included), is scheduled to be released by the end of June. Of course, the additional caveat of "sooner or later" was added to the conversation. I expressed my frustration to a genesis rep named "Paul", who was very polite as he read the script thanking me for notifying him of my concerns.

I also explained this was the same rhetoric I have been getting for the past year.

hey Gang;
Map&Soft will not sell an individual the update- only sold to dealers. Have your dealer call Norma at M&S- she says the update is available and in stock. I had my 2009 Genny tech updated with the 2010 map data (long story and much frustration) and the 2009 update is the same data.
Be advised, however, that more than just the map data is being updated- that's why it takes over 200 minutes and why only a dealer can do it because, among other things, the car must be connected to a battery charger for the duration. Also be advised that all existing destination data will be lost and must be reentered. Same is true for all phone numbers.
Why Hyundai customer service says the update will be out the end of June is either they are wrong or M&S is wrong- then again, as in the past, maybe both are wrong.

Hey Guys, I finally sent an email to John Krafcik complaining about this ridiculous situation regarding the map upgrade. This is what I was told after a "sincere" apology. There is a map upgrade that they will schedule for me in May, I believe GPERZEl has already had that done, but they also mentioned a 2nd map upgrade they will provide me to bring the maps current to 2010. I've included the emails below so you can read them yourselves. I do not for minute that my email was answered by John Krafcik himself but I was impressed with the fact that they responded to quiries over several consecutive days. I have suggested GenesisOwners.com as a main forum for desiminating Hyundai information so just maybe we can get a little better communication from Hyundai in the future. I explained that Hyundai's response would be a determining factor in whether I considered or recommended the Equus to friends or myself as a furute purchase. We'll see.

Thanks Mr. Thomas

We’ll be in contact with you soon to schedule the first service appointment.

We’ll be posting updates on Genesis owners sites…which ones do you think are most important for us to prioritize?

All the best

Dear Mr. Krafcik,

Thank you for your speedy response and offer to resolve the problem. In my case getting the maps updated is worth the 2 trips so I will accept your offer. My dealership information is below. I also feel that I have some responsibility to the other Genesis owners on Genesis Owners, who supply generous support and invaluable information to members of the forum, to update them on how Hyundai intends to resolve their situations as well. I look forward to you providing me with information that I can pass along that they can take to their dealers or to your office directly (or whatever solution you deem appropriate). Once again, thank you for your understanding and offer.

Sincerely,

Gerry Thomas

Hello again Mr. Thomas,

We’ll have upgraded maps with one-year fresher info than your current level by mid-May, with another update capturing another full year of mapping updates available around August.

The map update process should take your dealership about 2 hours to accomplish.

All the best,

John Krafcik

Dear Mr. Thomas,

Thanks for your note, and a special thanks to you for all of your business. Staying with us from XG to Azera to Genesis is an incredible demonstration of loyalty, and you deserve better from us regarding the late Genesis map update. I'm very sorry you've had to wait so long for this.

We'll have this update out in the next few months...let me follow-up with you tomorrow with a more specific date.

Thanks again for your business, and your loyalty.

Warm regards,

John Krafcik

Latest Update****** Received a call from the Regional Consumer Affairs Manager of the Southern Region yesterday afternoon. He said that he had received an email from John Krafcik asking him to contact me about getting the updated maps installed in my Genesis. I wasn't able to reach him yesterday because of the lateness of my arrival home but I intend to try and reach him on Monday. I'd like to confirm a few things that I think are adding to all the confusing details we've been individually getting and trying to piece together. From what I've read here in the forum it would appear that only GPerzel has actually had the update installed in his Genny. HeavyG stated on 4/22 that his dealership was ordering the update. My dealership was supposedly given a purchase order from a regional sales rep but so far nothing, which is why I wrote directly to Mr Krafcik. But taking the information that Mr Krafcik wrote back to me and what I've found out doing so research thsi is what I think if going on.

On 4/13 a TSB was released for:
DIS NAVIGATION SYSTEM MAP UPDATE PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides the procedure on how to purchase and install the Genesis Sedan
map update software to the DIS Navigation System.
NOTE: The DIS navigation map update is not covered under the factory
warranty; customers will be charged for the procedure.
NOTE: The map update procedure will take approximately 3 hours.
APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
2009 - 2010 Genesis Sedan with the DIS Navigation System

GPerzel said that his update had the same date as the update for the 2010 Gennys - 2009-8-25. Taking this information and matching it to the information in Mr Krafcik's 2nd email to me it states that there are 2 map upgrades. I believe that the first upgrade updates your maps to 2009 and there is a 2nd upgrade sometime in August, according to Mr Krafcik's email, that will update the maps to 2010. According to the TSB the update is not a warranty item. If there are to be 2 updates released this year you may want to bypass the 2009 and wait for the 2010, if indeed that is the plan. That is what I want to discuss with the Regional Manager. I wil let you know what I find out. I've also recommended to Mr Krafcik that Hyundai communicate to their customers through Genesis Owners, in addition to their other marketing outlets, as I have found this to be the most knowledgeable Genesis/Hyundai forum on the web. Some of you may want to see if you can get your dealer to deal with the TSB as a warranty item since it has been released so late. As I stated earlier, if I find out that there will be a more up to date 2010 map being released later this year I will let you know in this forum.

Hi Gang;
With reference to BaldEagles last post, please be advised of the following:
The update performed on my 2009 genny was done with discs brought from the regional parts center to the dealer by a tech person. he tried to install the update, but was unsuccessful because he did not have the proper authorization code. He left the discs with the dealer, whoi ultimately installed them two days later when they had received the code. This was not, to my knowledge, the eagerly awaited update promised for so long, but he same software in the TSB package mentioned on numerous other threads.
I have posted the exact software version numbers on another thread-the NAV data is the same as that in the TSB.
Map&Soft insists that a new update is available for the 2009 Gennys but will sell it only to dealers. Does anyone know of any dealer who has contacted M&S, purchased the update, and/or installed it???
Has anyone had the update installed????????????

Received this email from Mr Krafcik today. He says that he has visited Genesis Owners and will make sure that updated information is posted here by the end of the week. You'll also see where he responds to my post where I question whether or not I was actually corresponding with him. Thought that was funny. Let's see what information Hyundai provides.

From: Krafcik, John [HMA] To: Gerry Thomas

Thx Gerry. I had a chance today to check out the GenesisOwners.com site. Appreciate the tip. We hope to have something up there by the end of the week explaining the Genesis navi update process.

All the best,

John Krafcik

PS: By the way, this really is me ;-)

OK, I haven't been on here in a while, and I don't want to read 14 pages (I read the last 3). I have a 2009 4.6 purchased on 12/30/08. How much is the cost to upgrade the GPS map software through Hyundai? Thx

Cost is $0 to who knows? No record of anyone having it done yet from the "released" upgrade. Price per Map&Soft is $199 but can only be done by dealer. Hyundai has said dealer is free to set his own pricing as upgrade takes at least 3 hours and car must be running for the full time or connected to battery charger.
