If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil change info 3.8 V6 in pics

Is the 27 mm socket required for the 3.8L or the 5.0L (mine) or what?

I think I take a 24 mm. - not sure.

Haven't done the job yet - looks like a lot of fun.

24mm for the V8 G2.

24mm for the V8 G2.
My recollection from 6 years ago when I purchased a 27mm socket for my V6 Genesis oil filter changes, is that the size that fits may depend on whether it is a 4-point, 6-point, or 12-point socket.

When I say it takes a 24mm for the G2 V8, why in the world are you coming back with sizes for the G1 V6? Talk about stirring up confusion.

For those with a Genesis V6 who want to change the oil filter from the top (possible on a 2009-2011, or 2015-2016 by reaching down between the radiator and engine), here is an interesting low profile infinitely adjustable tool I found on the Internet. A low profile socket is needed on the 2015-2016 V6 when changing from the top. I have not tried it.

Confusion is the name of the game on this forum.

In any case, thanks Midnight - I paid big bucks for a spare filter cap and I thought I may have had the wrong one.

When it comes to oil filters and the Genesis, Hyundai is mostly to blame for that. They started out in 2009 using the same exact oil filter for V6 and V8, but then switched to new filter for the V8 only retroactively, and it has been a state of confusion ever since.

When I first changed the oil on by 2009 V6, a Hyundai dealer sold me the wrong cartridge filter after searching his computer for at least 5 minutes (it was not even close to the right size for any Genesis), which I did not find out until I did the oil change.

x-post from another thread, but has anyone successfully removed the filter from the top on the V6?

Also, on my last oil change, i had originally planned to change the oil filter without removing the front fairing, but i couldn't get the filter housing moving without a 27mm socket and all mine are deep sockets so i put a 27mm oil filter socket on my wish list.

That and a mighty vac should allow me to do the changes without dropping either of the fairings. A Chinese food takeout container (black plastic) fit perfectly to catch the oil from the housing.

Were you able to remove the oil filter without removing the fairing? It has been over a year. Did you give up?

Can somebody confirm the oil drain plug takes a 17mm size socket? V6 3.8L engine

2009 V6 sedan, I found my oil filter on top of the engine, right at the rear of the intake manifold. 27mm hex removed the housing cap.

Why isn't this noted anywhere in this thread? Was it only 2009 that did this?

The 2009-2011 V6 has the oil filter in that location. When they switched from EFI to GDI in 2012, they moved the oil filter to the bottom of the engine.

This section of the forum is actually for 2015+ Genesis (2G). Even though all oil filters starting at 2012 are at the bottom of the engine, there is a difference between 2012-2014 (1G) and 2015+ (2G).

Good point.

I personally think Hyundai should give out some sort of DIY award for anybody who successfully does the oil/filter change on the 2G V8 (and does it right).

On second thought, based on some of the posts I've seen, maybe they should give out such an award to their mechanics.

ntx_v8, Thank you for the detailed DIY. After looking at my 2015 V6, I am going to the first oil change this weekend at bout 1,000 miles. Using Mobile one 5w-30 EP and Mityvac 7300 PneumatiVac Air-Operated Fluid Evacuator (Thanks, rec by Mark 888).

Just one question: about how much oil came out of the oil filter housing (OFH)? b/c i am doing this from the top as i was able to fit a 4 " high tuberware under OFH which am hoping is enough to catch the old oil :)

TIA.

attached pix for tuberware catch :)

I just did the oil change like 2 days ago and only about.25 quarts of oil came out. What I did was just loosen it up till oil dripped out then waited till it stopped to take off the housing

So I did my first oil change on the V6 today at just over 2k miles. I used regular 5W-30 Mobil 1, a Hyundai oil filter and the mityvac. The mityvac worked great except the plug on the top comes out to easy. No mess. I noticed a short handle socket for removing the filter housing works better because it clears the anti-sway bay. The rectangle Chinese food tray under the filter housing worked great. Make sure to have the lid handy because you'll need to turn the tray a bit sideways to remove it from the engine bay. The filter housing has a small cage inside which I mistakenly thought the filter sits upon, but you actually need to push the filter over this cage. I should do the oil change much quicker next time. And I set the service reminder for 5k miles. Sweet!
