If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

I don't think I will need to demand one, I expect based on the other experiences on this forum that Hyundai will replace the engine. I am now more curious what they will replace the engine with. A new long block is obviously a preference, but the reality is I assume I have to take what they give me!
According to the warranty terms, they can fix your engine or provide a rebuilt one. So long as it is factory rebuilt (or rebuilt by Hyundai and not the dealer) I don't see anything wrong with that.

You don't want some tech at a dealer rebuilding your engine.

No, although that tech will be taking this engine from short or longblock form to complete. There is a lot in that job that can go wrong or mistakes that can be made. I gaurantee you that the tech replacing my engine will have never done a Tau replace in his life. According to the tech writer he likely will have a few sonota engine replacements under his belt tho! Apparently they had a bad (cheap) batch of spark plugs that broke apart in the combustion chamber.

Since they have to return my engine, I wonder why not have the factory send out the replacement as a complete unit, but alas, we will see. When I drop the hammer my genny smokes. It's obvious where the oil is going!

I pushed Nissan for a complete engine off of the factory line with my 2 week old Armada. They eventually agreed.

Just checked the level after 2.2k miles on the oil change and it's still on the full mark we made, I'm thinking they didn't PDI it correctly at the dealership. I'll check it again in another 1k miles and post if any change. It seems to be hit and miss with the QC on these engines.

End of consumption test, my car burns 1 qt every 1700 miles. Of course the dealer said it is within specs...will b calling Hyundai Monday with results

There are no specs. Your engine is one of the defective ones that they have since corrected, so demand a new one. It will do no good discussing this with the dealer.

Yes they did. I now own a 2014 and its fine. The whole car, drive, engine matted to transmission, seats, head unit, everything is better in the 2014, and it's still my sexy Genny!!! LOL. Good luck guys.

That's good to hear because my lease is coming up this summer on my '11 4.6 tech and I was looking to move up to an Rspec. :D

I'm sure there will be some really good incentives on these cars when the '15's hit the dealerships!

I'm having the same consumption issue on my '12. I called HMA and have a ticket in, but then went to the dealer and have a test underway now. I'm about 300 miles into the 1500 mi test.

I have used 2.5 quarts in 2000 miles. I have 500 more miles to go to hit 3000 an end the test. I will have burned 3 qts in 3K for sure, so we will see if a call to HMA is even necessary.

I am very curious what they want to replace my engine with. I just hate to see them use a long block and reuse things like spark plugs. I will be very detail specific when all of this occurs. I know a thing or two about engines and will be sure I am ok with the proposed work done. While this work is done, I am guessing I will have them do a transmission service/flush since I will be at 50K miles.

Gentlemen

There is NOT A MANDATORY OIL CONSUMPTION TEST ...PERIOD. TO TOP IT OFF, MY FIRST 5 OIL CHANGES, 2 SEPARATE DEALERS IN 2 STATES ONLY PUT 5 QT. OIL PER CHANGE IN LIEU OF THE 7.2 QT. IN THE MANUAL.

STOP BEING PUPPETS. CONTACT THE BBB AUTO HOTLINE. ASK ABOUT YOUR STATES LEMON LAW. I LIVE IN FL AND MINE HAD EXPIRED, HOWEVER, SINCE I WAS ON FILE WITH OIL CONSUMPTION COMPLAINTS IT EXTENDED IT 60 DAYS WHICH PUT ME BACK WITH COMPLIANT THE FL LEMON LAW. I PUT HMA ON NOTICE JANUARY 25TH, AS REQUIRED WITH THE FL LEMON LAW, VIA CERTIFIED MAIL.

HMA RESPONDED AS REQUIRED BY LAW WITHING 10-DAYS WITH AN APPOINTMENT AND A LOANER CAR SCHEDULED TO DROP OFF MY 2012 GENESIS R SPEC FEBRUARY 25TH. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR UNKNOWN TESTS SAID DAY. GENESIS R SPEC WAS RETURNED BY HYUNDAI SERVICE MANAGER MARCH 7TH WITH A NEW 2014 ENGINE...NOT A RE-MANUFACTURED.

CAR RUNS LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL NOW, STRONGER THAN BEFORE.

Thanks 2012 RSpec for posting a good resolution plan to end up with a new motor (that is the right thing to do).

Test done. according to service writer, 3 quarts consumed in 3000 miles. Hyundai considers this normal.

Called Hyundai and opened a case. The woman from Hyundai was "not good" to be polite. Opened a case, but said I am supposed to talk to the Hyundai Rep whom visits dealers periodically. Made no sense and she wasn't doing anything. Called back dealer and they stated that is NOT the process. The Hyundai rep has only talked directly to one customer that they are aware of in 10 years. Dealer said with case open they will get contacted and we can go from there.

Ideas? I called 800-633-5151

FYI, I called back and got a better rep. She will contact dealer, but I believe this is where the run-around begins. Dealer will say 1Qt/1000 is within spec.

She will get back to me by Friday, I will give her the opportunity to come back with options.

Hyundai called back, they have confirmed consumption with dealer and the woman at Hyundai escalated to a regional rep. She said 24-48 hours to return with a finding. She made a point to say this was the final determination.

Perhaps not. In a conversation with a very large dealership today I was told that initially there would be no 2015 R-spec's and perhaps not the entire model year. Instead there would be four levels of the Genny sedan (both 3.8 and 5.0 engine options).

I think he meant he could get a great deal on a 2014 R Spec.

*Update*
After speaking with HMA last week they told me they would contact the dealership and I would hear something in 7-10 business days.

Of note they keep saying they never heard of this problem with our cars...I wonder if we post our claim numbers after problem is fixed if that would make the process easier for other members with this issue?

I got a call this morning from dealership and they ordered me a new motor and should arrive 3-5 days.

The number I called for HMA is 877-277-0012.

Thanks for the feedback. This helps everyone and is what a forum is all about...
