If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

How did you know it was German rings? I would have guessed Japanese supplier.

I am just wondering where you saw the information. I couldn't figure out who was suppying their piston rings. No information on it.

Couple places... I emailed someone I know as Subaru when I saw this. Confirmed conjecture I had they used the rings from same place. This has hit a ton of makers.

Just spoke to a tech who works at high end BMW dealer at the Ecoboost challenge (while waiting in line).. He also gave many stories of ring problems in certain motors caused by European maker of piston rings.

I have one other source that is a client, who has mentioned the situation by name and geography. One day soon, I imagine the names of the two European companies mentioned will come out officially.

I just checked my oil yesterday, and was 2 quarts low!!! I should be checking more often and will moving forward. It's been about 2500 miles since my last oil change. I'm definitely concerned. I do make short trips to work and commute locally. Not much long drives. I try and drive the car easy until it warms up in the morning. I live in florida so it's not like northeast climate.

The level on the dipstick is now in between F and Low.

Before when I checked it was below Low mark on the oil dipstick.

my car is 2012 r-spec

I would guess it only warrants a new short block. A whole new crate might be viewed unnecessary.

In the early days, all were getting new crate motors. Drop in and replace. Now, seems like dealers want the labor of turning wrenches and going for short (or one could say Shft block) block many times.. Or Hyundai in different zones with .gov style zone management wonks seem to press for a half baked rebuild by former grads from the local auto school grads (sarcasm for effect added). If it happened to me, I would lawyer up and demand a new crate motor like so many got in the past. BTW, the rings were defective by design, and known to this German company.. The flaw was exposed by Hyundai, design was changed and fixed, within the same model year. Many brands of autos have had the same problem during the era with this. Especially VW, BMW and others. Hyundai was doing the right thing.

Point is, do not settle for a block put back together by local hands and tools. Instead of a factory fresh robot and hands built to exacting specs factory motor. Let alone the resale value issues with a block verses a new motor. And ones time to deal with all this. The crate motor is the proper thing to continue with.

my buddy that works at a dealer has done 3 short block repairs on 5.0 motor. 1st was his own car at 23k miles.

Mine has 48k and am going to be watching the oil levels over the next few weeks before I make my decision on what route I want to take.

Suggest getting a new one.. He will still get enough labor payout to keep his boat payment going (old Car Talk, Click and Clack phrase).. And you get a motor that has every rod bolt, every nut, fastener, whatever, tightened in perfect balance and within .5 pound by orbits and computer machines run by people in the Hyundai factory.

Has anyone tried using 10-30 oil? In hot weather would this be ok to use. I'm in Florida it's hot all the time.

Yes, 5-30 with good success for those masses that do not have the German defective ring problem. There have been reports that dealers when testing oil issue with the few 2012s, were caught using 10-30.. To try to hide the problem.. Did not work.. Still sucked enough oil for a new motor. Which, BTW, once approved, seems like a better customer sat outcome than what some have heard the VW and other German brand owners have been stuck with.

i drove mine hard off the line to "help" it burn more for the test, i was leaving smoke screens lol

You have a update report?

Funny... Others have not done that, and still got their motor... Glad you got yours.. Glad Hyundai, in the end, is standing by the product. Warning: sarcasm... Unlike others reported who have invested in the German brands who have the same defective German rings.. Reports they are stuck with adding oil every 6-1100 miles, some using 10-40 oil... Geez...

In process of last oil consumption test. Down a quart and a half in last 1300 miles. checking AGAIN in 1000 miles, then I will most likely have short block replaced under warranty. There was another guy with a 2012 5.0 in for the same thing, he had to have his car towed to the dealership, he ran out of oil it burned so much.

I check my oil often, because stories ive heard.. Ive been lucky, no issues. I burn maybe a half a quart every 2800miles or so..

90 percent city, take back roads to work. 30mile round trip

I had my oil changed a few months back by Hyundai after driving it a few thousand miles. I asked the mechanic is the oil coming out seemed like the right amount. He said yes.

My oil light came on today. Luckily I was 200 yards or so from a car shop where people I know and trust work. I was five quarts low.

I park in the same spot and no oil on ground...the tailpipes are very dirty inside....

seems very excessive..
