  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

price paid for extended warranty

Has anyone purchased one of these recently? I was quoted $2498 for the platinum plan from my Hyundai dealer, which as far as I can tell is the full price. This was on a 2010 3.8 Genesis w/ 29,xxx on the clock. Just bought the car this past Saturday.

Was this from Auffenberg??

All,

I did ping Jim Ellis with the question as to why the text of the document does not jibe with their description of all factory installed electronics....no reply yet. When/if I get something, I'll post.

I'd be open to a reasonable surcharge or maybe a different deductible I guess...we'll see.

Posting to the thinktank is not at all a bad idea. If nothing else, perhaps they know of an existing solution that the dealers might not know about or pitch cause there's no money in it for them,,,

Philth,

When you get your Geico paperwork, please be so kind as to post their coverage/exclusionary language here as well. Your solution sounds even more attractive now if it is full coverage.

With respect to Matt21484, not sure where he is located, but apparently if you live in FL, you are out of luck. In florida an extended warranty is treated as an insurance policy and all insurance policy pricing is dictated by the gov't and they can't discount.

Thanks

One more thing that just hit me....it is not at all clear whether the LDWS would be covered for those of us with 2012+ cars....

If you have another mailing address (ahem, say a relative) you can lurk into a grey area by registering the policy with an out of state address (FL and Cali have similar ways of treating ext warranty's as insurance policies--which ends up limiting any competition amongst pricing) and then having someone fwd along the warranty materials. Once your VIN is in the HMA system, it's in there..they don't know if you moved or reside in two states. I guess some would see this as a moral issue and others would see it as a much of saving a grand plus on the same exact policy.

I'll post something on the ThinkTank tomorrow in regards to an inquiry on a clarification of the terms/fine print/coverage.

Hey Kraztfiend, Anything from the ThinkTank? Not urgent, but just wanted the topic to stay top of mind until resolved/clarified. I have not heard back from Jim Ellis with a solution yet. Will post once I do.

Philth posted some good info on the Geico option, but unfortunately it seems to only apply to original purchasers; of which I'm not.

Thanks

Has it been determined what is and what isn't covered under the extended warranty? I'm going to be purchasing a new Genesis soon, and would like to know if the warranty is worth it.

Thanks

RogerRoger,

I spoke with the Jim Ellis rep this weekend and she told me that she searched high and low to get clarification but made no progress. She recommended (as do I) to assume that the radar oriented items are NOT covered. This would include likely LDWS, parktronic and ACC.

Give Jennifer a call at Jim Ellis Hyundai if you want more details. As I recall, I posted the 'exclusions' for the Hyundai Platinum wty in this thread.

Let us know what you get quoted. My quote was $1360 for a 10/100 on my car with less than 5k currently, but yours might be even better if you buy when new.

Good luck.

Right now I'm looking at a new 2013 with only premium package, so I should be good I believe.
The price I was quoted from Rick Case is $2,195. I believe I'll be negotiating that down or looking elsewhere. This may be a stupid question, but can you buy your new car at one dealership and buy the platinum warranty from another?

Thanks

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Sure you can...however you may lose a bit of leverage in the negotiating, but at $2195, they are $800 over JE so it would definitely be worth it.

Are you in ATL? If so, I'd suggest looking at buying your car out of state and buying your warranty here at JE. The ATL market for these cars is fairly high. There are some good deals to be had by shopping around if you are willing to travel. Remember a new car is largely a commodity so they can be fairly reliably bought sight unseen.

Good luck

Jay

Well we've hi-jacked the thread a little talking price for cars and shopping around, but on the surface $30k for a new premium car sounds pretty good. Maybe check out the "Prices Paid So We Can All Prosper" thread...

I was not shopping for new when I bought mine 4 mos ago, so that may well be a good deal. I found searching autotrader for the dealer with the lowest advertised price on a new base model made a good starting point. Once you know what they will sell that for and spend the money to advertise it, you can call them and see what they will do on a premium car.

I ended up buying a slightly used (7 mos and 3k miles old) 2012 tech package 500 miles from home, but I saved about $3k-5k over what I would have had to pay locally.

New user here & new owner of a CPO '12 3.8 Tech.

The finance manager at the Hyundai dealership where I bought my Genesis from quoted me $1,695 for the platinum $50 deductible CPO Wrap. This was the first car I ever bought from a dealer, and I wasn't prepared for getting a hard sell on a warranty, so in retrospect I went in to this negotiation completely unprepared. Said no to the warranty on that basis alone.

After finding this forum and this thread, I called Jim Ellis, got right through to Hau-B Cao, business manager. Got an immediate quote on the phone for $1,350 for the platinum $0 deductible. The rest of the process consisted of emailing him a scan of my drivers' license, he sent me a contract to sign, scan, and email back. The whole process was fast and easy and I didn't get any hard sell from Hau-B.

One detail about the HPP extended warranty program that I don't remember reading in this thread, is that there are 2 variants: one for (presumably) all used Hyundais, and one that's only for CPOs. The CPO plan is called the "HPP CPO Wrap" and it must be bought "at the same time" as the car purchase. The premium for the CPO plan is significantly less than the premium for non-CPOs, it's about a factor of 2 difference. So my advice to any CPO buyers would be to ideally call up Jim Ellis (or whoever else you might want to solicit bids from) and line up a CPO wrap quote before going through with your purchase.

I haven't heard of anyone offering a better deal on a genuine Hyundai extended warranty than Jim Ellis. My experience with Hau B is exactly as 440 describes.

Hey 440,

Glad you had a good experience with JE. They run a first rate operation.

How many miles on your car and when in service? I have just under 5k miles and about 2 weeks away from 1yr in service. Last time I spoke to JE, they thought the price might go up a bit after 5k. My quote was basically same as yours $1380 I think.

Thanks

My limited experience with JE was definitely positive. I would have never thought to call them w/o this forum, as I live in Connecticut.

My car specs for warranty purposes: 2012 3.8 tech package, 19.5k miles, just under 1 year in service. Don't know if they price in Carfax/Autocheck info when pricing policies (since they do require a VIN when pricing, as others have mentioned) but mine had one previous owner (non-lease), no accidents on record, regular documented dealer service.

From Butler Hyundai in Indy, I paid 1360 for the platinum, $0 deductible 10-100 bumper to bumper. Price when buying the car. So, they were reasonable, unless someone had a different view.

Just paid $1295 for 10/100,000 platinum from a dealer in NH listed on the board. My local dealer wanted $1895 in Florida. 32% difference! yikes.

My dealer offers 1,500 for lifetime, unlimited bumper 2 bumper and transferable to a second owner but I have not yet decided.

A lifetime duration for no more than US$ 150.00 than the typical figures we see for 10Y/100K miles seems to good to be true...

LOL. I wished.
1,500.00 USD
