  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Rear-View Camera Quality

The rear camera resolution is fine. More than fine for a car which costs less than half of similar cars with the same or worse rear view camera. It's function is to aid backing up and avoiding objects - the resolution and two angle options perform that very well. No reason to see if a coin on the ground is a dime or nickel, so its function over cost done well.

As I clearly said: it works fine - but it could certainly be better and the refresh rate is slow - when cars pass by behind you and you get the cross traffic alert, the car's movement is quite jerky/stuttery.

Mine is just fine. Nice and clear.

Not having those issues. Maybe your camera?

My G2 ultimate has a pretty clear picture. Frame/refresh rate should never be an issue. If so you have a much larger problem and should take it in.

I did notice that the loaner 2016 Sonata Sport they gave me while replacing my sunroof had a more crisp image than my car - it was surprising actually. But certainly nothing for me to complain about with regards to mine.

For those saying that refresh/frame rate is good, and resolution is good; Perhaps you haven't seen a truly good backup camera to compare it to. I don't mean that in a rude way... I'll mention again the C300. Go sit in one if you get the chance, and compare it. It's an outrageous difference.

Also, the refresh rate on the Gen1 Genesis is so much better it's shocking.

I've now test driven two brand new Gen2 Genesis, and the cameras are the same.. just plain bad :( I've wanted to love this car, but it's a combination of these little things holding me back... that, along with the rattling pano roof problems, etc. Dangit!

Sorry if I seem like a wet blanket. I just want to love this car, and can't afford to go higher up market at this point.

The quality of a camera that you use probably .0001% of the time you are driving the car should not stop you from loving the vehicle. Remember - it is also a supplement to how you SHOULD be "backing up"... not a replacement for it.

Nope, I owned 2 G2's and driven a bunch of loaners - ALL had the identical camera quality in term of resolution and refresh rate. The refresh rate is ok for backing up, but when a car pasees behind you, the slight stuttering is clearly evident. As I said, it works fine, but could certainly be better.

Sounds like you should not buy a G2 Genesis. I have seen bad. This is not bad, nor the best.

For the seconds a day that small camera is accessed strictly as an aid to backing up, it seems trivial to me, but you seem like someone who finds this important enough as to move to another brand or hold onto your current ride. I wish I could get worked up over the camera, but it is low on my list of needs and I find it clear, functional and more than sufficient.

All we are saying is it could certainly be better. They touted the HD display in the Ultimate, so I was surprised at the camera resolution the first time I used it as they are not even close to using the full resolution of the screen.

Agreed - listening to the rattle from my pano roof all the way home today on pretty smooth roads (actually seems more like something loose in the headliner above the driver's door) on my second try with a G2 tells me that Hyundai has much bigger issues to sort out than the average quality rear view camera!

You may have misunderstood my response to the OP. His fixation over the rear camera resolution seems to be the critical item in his selection of a new car. In that case, maybe a car with a camera that exceeds all others is best for him. I find the camera fine and it's ultimate resolution was no where on my requirement list for a new vehicle.

I got that - just pointing out that regardless of the camera quality, Hyundai appears to have bigger things to worry about. I'm on #2 and this one has noise issues from the roof area as well - not acceptable at this price point (actually not collect at any price point). It's really frustrating as I like the car alot, otherwise.

I earnestly feel bad for you. Mine has been basically problem free. I do not have any rattles and even with the very minor wind noise from the drivers window, it is the quietest car I have owned. Had iPod Classic connectivity issues early on, but ended up loading up the jukebox drive and have been happy since.

My expectations were purposely set lower going in, coming from years of BMW's, but this car has pretty much hit it on all points. Not diminishing you real issues, I am not sure there is a model wide quality issue, as internet forums are a risky way to analyze statistics. Not sure the complaint ratio here is any better or worse than other car forums. The BMW boards are full of a mix of issues and accolades, regardless of model or year.

Hope your issues get sorted out or you can find a way to accept them when weighing it all out. I am not sure quality is Hyundai's real challenge with this car - it is the higher expectations of service and dealer experience that will be the hardest to overcome.

Exactly why I mentioned the pano roof being one of the other major deterrents for me. It does seem to be a very real problem.

Trust me, I'm not a hater! I rather enjoy my Genesis Gen 1, and hope to some day own another... so long as they address certain quality issues.

You guys with the pano roof issues need to see my latest post in the rattle thread. :)

I haven't had any issue with video quality or at least it is as I would expect and no better/worse than multiple other cars I've had that had backup cameras. My bigger complaint is the delay for the camera to pop on screen. By the time I have shifted into reverse I am ready to backup, but I am stuck waiting for the camera view to pop up on screen. All the other cars I have had are much quicker.

Amen: It would be suicidal to back out to the road in front of my house using that little toy. Get whacked in no time.

the back up cam resolution is definitely a lower quality. I think they saved some money there on the cost cuts.

my former 2007 lexus had a better camera resolution for sure.

Are you watching a 4k movie filmed in 8k on an LG oled panel? No. It's a back-up cam and it works just fine, not to mention the straight down feature is really useful.

What an odd thing to complain about. As long as it's more than clear enough to see objects in my path (and it is), I'm good. I don't really need to be able to tell whether that quarter sitting on the pavement is heads or tails. Nor would I want Hyundai to spend the extra money - and pass those costs on to me - to make it so.
