  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Recall/Free Tire Replacement???

Can someone please scan a copy of the notice they received regarding the tires. If I don't receive the notice, should I contact the dealer or can someone recommend a way to contact Hyundai directly. I'm hoping this resolves the issue once and for all.

Just ordered a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS. Will tell you how they work out. :D

We all thank you in advance for the upcoming report.

Would be cool if they gave you a tire voucher, that way if someone wanted an upgrade, they could apply their own funds.

Agree - would be a good idea, but they likely cut a deal on the Continental's so the voucher would not get you much off an upgrade, I suspect.

You should be happy with them. Those brands were and still are highly recommended by folks driving E39 BMW's. Best all season high performance tires.

I suck at linking things to posts, but here is the letter with just the VIN (poorly) redacted :)

Let me know if it's not showing up.

Thanks for the scan. Problem here is in the beginning someone mentioned they are replacing the Hankooks with Continentals which is clearly stated on the scanned letter however it was mentioned these would be Pro Contacts which may be OK for the V6 Genesis BUT the only tire Continental makes for the V8 setup is the Extreme Contact DW or DWS. Since they say they provide excellent traction in rain or snow one can only assume it must be the DWS since the DW is a dedicated summer tire and do not work in the snow at all.

A) Has anyone with a V8 received a letter yet?

B) Please post the tire model whoever gets theirs swapped out on a V8 please.

C) Wonder if this has anything to do with the tires blowing up in the Saudi extreme temps.

"Some customers have mentioned slight tire noise and vibration which may be amplified by road conditions."

That last part tells me they did extensive research and fully understand the problem. Thought I was wasting my time going through the survey and especially making comments.

Thank you, Hyundai, for listening to your customers, and more importantly for taking action! :)

Those Continentals were very similar to the OEM tires on my wife's Audi and they were very, very loud, and I thought OK for traction.

Just finished a 1200 mile road-trip on the Hankooks and I'm impressed. I use an extra 5 psi, which seems to help direction control.

MidnightSun, I (the OP and person who scanned the letter) own a V8 Ultimate. So the ProContact is mentioned even on ours. I called the dealer and they said they heard about something like that coming up, but hadn't recieved info or the tires. I will try the HMA number and see if I get any better info.

Since the ProContact mentioned in the letter do not appear to be in the V8 sizes, I hope the new cars will ship with the Extreme Contact DWS. If not, this is a downgrade.

Maybe someone else will have better luck than me, but the specialist at HMA who researched it when I called yesterday and had said they didn't make Continental ProContact tires in our V8 size didn't change the answer. They said all 19" V8 would be replaced with Continental ProContact TX per the internal information they had, and dealer instructions. They advised it could be a special order was made by HMA in a tire size they don't normally make, but that seems like a highly unlikely way to handle it.

Dealership said they do now have the instructions (Code P18), but do not have the tires in stock yet and said their information also says Continental ProContact TX.

Still not that great of info, every site including Continental themselves says they do not make a ProContact that would fit on the rear of the V8, but 2 HMA specialists and the dealer are CERTAIN that is what will be placed on the car.

I'm going to put a few miles on the Hankook's and wait and see for the dealer to have a stock of them.

Are any 3.8 owners getting this letter? Are the ties on the 3.8 the same as the 5.0? I have no received a letter but I am happy with my Hankooks.

The dealer said he found the order for their initial stock and it says ProContact TX for both the front and rear, and he can now order ProContact in the rear size on Hyundai's site (Something Continental doesn't normally make).

I still guess I don't see why they would spend potentially millions to solve a flat-spotting/road noise issue and put in a Grand Touring tire that is not only too low of a speed rating for our car, but also has road noise complaints from many customers.

ExtremeContact Continental's seem like the obvious choice. Maybe I'm over thinking it, but I would think tires that weren't rated for such a high torque car would be a nightmare spinning in the rain and cold and almost be a potential safety issue. Again I've driven 400-500 HP cars for the last 9 years and only ever put Max Performance Summer or Ultra High Performance A/S on my cars. A 65,000 mile guarantee Grand Touring tire just blows the mind.

None of this makes sense - replace a "noisy" tire with a noisier one and also downgrade the performance and safety on the V8 version by special ordering an inferior product.

We must be missing something....

Nope, have not heard anything...

I just checked with the service adviser at my dealer and he did a search on tire replacement. He found a TSB authorizing the replacement, but found only 19 inch wheels applicable and covered, which means V8s only. Maybe the V6 will come up in the future.

Something is up. If the V8 rear tire has been discontinued then there must be a safety issue or something safety related going on here. I have my doubts that Hyundai is doing this because of a few complaints as they indicated. The Hankook Noble is not discontinued in other sizes, only the big buggers on the rear of the V8. :D

MidnightSun that actually makes something the dealer said make more sense. Because my thought was if it's such a bad replacement I just won't do it. He said it's not listed as a courtesy replacement, but a critical recall and it would likely just be done automatically when I took it in for other servicing. Obviously I could probably fight that, but similar to the rear brake light deal they are being advised to immediately replace when one comes in for any service.

I'd be 100% on board for the Continental ExtremeContact they are the same rating as our current tires, appropriate for the car, and get very good reviews overall as well as for road noise, but the ProContact just still doesn't make any sense...special ordering a size they don't produce, for a car they shouldn't be on, on a tire with more complaints of road noise issues than the Hankook it's still just not making ANY sense.
