  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Secondary air door/A.K.A Flapper door Experiment

If you would like me to eventually merge the two threads, we can do that. Or I can move the posts or something. Let me know. But both threads do serve their purposes....

OneFunGenesis thank you for the offer, I just sent you a PM with my thoughts...

OneFunGenesis, thank you for taking care of everything....

My experience with my 2012 5.0 seemed to have no effect with off the line acceleration. It did seem to actually slow down the down shifting action of the tranny when going WOT from 30 - 40 mph. I have never previously experienced any throttle response lag with my white Genny.

Other than protecting the transmission, I wonder why Hyundai provided this mechanism. I am suspect, however, that there may be other reasons for it.

GRIFF.

Griff, please if you can be kind enough to update the poll (not effected) in the other thread as I would like us keep track of this mod with hard data.

If I count myself (as not effected), The current trend seems to indicate that The R-Spec may not be prone to this issue, while 4.6 seem to be somewhat affected by this problem and the V6 seems to be most affected by the dead engine/throttle condition

However, more sampling data is required to get to a reasonable conclusion...

One thing i haven't seen anyone mention.. Since the amount of air that the computer has learned the car will receive during acceleration will be changed..

Not sure I totally agree with this assesment. The way I see it, it's still the same volume of air coming in, it just starts about 2 seconds sooner!

I removed the flapper door completely and have not looked back since.

That's the way I'm leaning. Although I think the mod I did is nearly the same as removing the door as the magnetic force is keeping it open and a very small amount of vacuum should open it fully, or just the force of the car surging forward. If I remove it completely I just have to remember before I take it in for any serious service work to put it back in. Of course I could always play dumb and just say I have no idea what the flapper door is or why it's missing from my car. I bet most mechanics at Hyundai would never know it was gone anyway.

Funny, when I replaced the Hyundai filter yesterday with the K&N there were a couple leaves in the air box and a price tag from some store stuck in it.

I haven't really noticed a big difference in driving yet but it's only been 25 miles or so and I didn't flash the computer after I did it. At a stoplight this morning when I knew the engine and transmission were warmed up I floored it when the light changed. The rear tire(s) instantly broke loose and the ESC kicked on to get the car moving forward without much fuss. I just put new Bridgestone Serenity Plus rubber on all the way around so I probably wont do that too often, but it was fun :-)

Glad to hear your results. Yeah with new tires I wouldn't do the burnout to often. lol

Before you modded the flapper door were you able to break the tires loose?

I was not able to before I removed the flapper. I'm very pleased with the results after removing the flapper door.

I wrote a full review a few pages back if you have not already read it.

LOLWUT?!

429 hp and you weren't able to smoke those tires?

There was only 1 or 2 times I floored it from a stop before the flapper door mod. I don't recall the tires breaking loose though. There were a couple times I accelerated hard from a stop at a turn and the ESC kicked on momentarily but that's to be expected with rwd and a turn with hard acceleration.

During our recent rain storms in LA it was actually fun driving with the junky dunlops. Making turns I would frequently try to get the rear end to kick out and I have to say the ESC does a pretty good job of keeping the car in check.

I'll go check out your review!

Damn, that's weird.....something isn't right with your car than.

I guess you have seen my video clips before, if not - there they are.

It was done with ESC fuse removed only. :p

Re: Wow! 50$ and a WORLD of difference!

Make sure to record the sound before and after changing mufflers, for us :D

Re: Wow! 50$ and a WORLD of difference!

AHHH, YES, I will do my best on that!

Re: Wow! 50$ and a WORLD of difference!

I also took the flapper valve out of the intake box as well. Made a big difference! I have the stock filter. Idk if a k and n filter would make a big difference.

Yeah, because I changed two variables simultaneously, I couldn't pinpoint where the magic happened, but the combination has me very happy!

Excited for us both to get our exhausts in the next two days too!

Yeah can't wait!!!!!!!

I'll try and post pics/ videos before and after installation.

How hard is the secondary foam filter to remove? Is that a consumable like the paper filter?

The secondary foam filter is held on by plastic posts with little metal clips you can carefully remove them with a small flat screw driver and save it for re installation at a later date, or just pull it out and potentially break the plastic posts if you dont care to re install it.

I have had my Car for for 2 days and this is the first thing done. Some of what I did differs a bit from what everyone else has done though. I completely removed the flapper door assembly as to maximize box volume and minimize airflow turbulence. Instead of removing the different resonator chambers I neutralized them. This was done to keep everything stock looking, and again, minimize turbulence. I capped off each resonator with black gorilla tape and put them back. The small mushroom resonator is plugged from the inside using a rubber plug. Lastly I removed the foam baffle from the filter box. Throttle response is noticably improved.
