If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Can we get back on the rattling roof topic please? :) I don't think 3 extra speakers or lack thereof adds to the rattle :D

Dumb q maybe, but do we have any evidence that the "sunroof rattle" is caused by the same or different problems in the various sunroofs? I don't remember reading of any of these problem roofs having actually been fixed or even improved except one where a loose part was discovered.

Mine's only been four days and maybe 200 miles under many different driving and road conditions and from driver only to full load, but so far the noise is GONE. It was very persistent and has now completely disappeared, so even if it doesn't stay fixed, it's gotta mean I'm working on the right area, at least FOR MY CAR. I must be addressing the area that's causing the problem on my particular vehicle and I wonder if the other roofs are the same or a completely different flaw? Are other owners dealing with the same problem or something completely different?

I know there are a few cars in dealerships being worked on, but has anyone else actually gotten rid of the noise or at least had any progress on this issue?

I at least this weekend determined my noise has absolutely nothing to do with my sunroof (builddate 6/5/14) . I have bad hearing meaning I can't hear the direction of sound . I removed everything from trunk spare etc . Put car up on ramps and had the intention to remove sway bars but was to much shit in the way. Instead I sprayed every bushing and part under there with Teflon grease . Made wifey poo get in and sit in car to tell me where noise is coming from and it's the passanger right rear on full acceleration it knocks but not all the time . It is just like a single knock at the door . Funk in pissed can't locate it. Mac

Could there be anything loose in the tool tray area of your trunk? Could your spare be a little bit loose? Good luck cuz I know these things can drive ya nuts! :)

No I removed everything but the battery. I love this car but this is bullshit

There's another thread where this 'knock' coming from the rear has been discussed.

I get it consistently when accelerating hard from a stop.

Next time it goes in I'll ask about it.

Well, my fingers are crossed. :) Listening to the rattle from my roof this AM I tilted the roof and the rattle went away; when I closed the roof the rattle would come back.

I have the exact same issue. Tilting the roof makes the knocking noise disappear but returns once I close the roof. Please let us know if lubricating it fixed the issue. And can you also share with us what you used to lube and what area in the roof exactly?

Thank you.

During my first 2 visits, the service adviser thought it was the trunk too. But the reason i determined it was the roof was because whenever I tilt or fully open the roof, the noise is absolutely 100% gone each time.

Did yours get fixed?

EDIT: Oops, I missed your post.

Mine is still okay. I used Zaino tire dressing because it seems to be pretty long-lasting, but probably any rubber seal dressing would do the job. I'll keep you posted if the noise comes back.

I paid special attention to the hard material (apparently plastic, not rubber) surrounding the moveable roof panel and the perimeter seals the panel contacts in the closed position then recoated every rubber surface I could find. Please be aware that I had tried this once before and it didn't help so I either missed the "spot" or it simply required a second application. Good luck! :)

Nope. After a 6th visit when they actually took out the headliner and all, they didn't find anything. They said they lubricated everything and didn't hear anything in their test drives. But when I rode it back to work that very same day, it was there like it never left.

I am going to attempt to lube the area that you mentioned earlier.

Good luck - I really hope it helps - this is such a frustrating problem. Keep us posted.

EDIT: I wonder if when they say they "lubed everything" they mean the hardware assembly and whether they lubed the rubber and plastic pieces at all.

Some more info on my knock investigation this past weekend . While laying on the ground underneath my car (while wifey rants i told you to get another Toyota)ahhhhh. Anyway I was able to move my exhaust system side to side and have the exhaust tips make contact with the bumper inserts will be looking into this further this weekend and also noticed made in Germany on some of the drive shaft parts . Mac

There's another area I discovered that I didn't know about or pay special attention to the first time I lubed my roof - the "skirts" on the moveable panel. They are flat pieces of plastic on the sides of the moveable panel and apparently mesh into the mechanism when it's closed, but you can't really see where it goes when closed. Anyway, I tried to pay a little bit of extra attention to making sure the areas were well coated with the tire dressing the last time I worked on it and that may be the reason it was a more successful attempt. YMMV.

Maybe some of these will be useful; posted in another thread as to not to fill this one up with photos.

Yeah just thought they might be useful in getting a look at the belly if you didn't always have access to/feel like crawling under a lift. If it's not, then that's cool. Believe me, I have a vested interest in seeing this problem get identified and fixed so they can fix it on the line.

Thanks for the pointers. Yes I noticed that mesh too. Last night I bought silicone based lubricant spray and generously sprayed the roof area - both in the tilt position and also in the open position.

I took the Genny out for a drive right after and noticed no rattle at all - especially at the end of my slanted driveway where I always get a knock. I was cautiously delighted.

This morning on my way way to work, I noticed the sound was back - albeit much quieter and more sparse than it has been all along. Perhaps another coat of spray is in order?
