Sunroof Rattle

The seals coming apart on the roof and splitting on the doors are indicative of harsh chemicals and detergents being used at the car wash - ie: drive-through/gas station and do-it-yourself wash bays. Wash it at home. In the shade. Use Dawn.

Mine's been hand washed only using Zaino products. Either way, these seals should last longer than 10,000 miles. Irregardless of the way they're treated.

update - apparently the seal in question on my roof can be replaced without the whole assembly being replaced. The dealership is working with a 'glass company' to get seals replaced. great news bc I don't want them tearing about my car if we can help it. Should be ready for PU monday and I'll update then

Seems like everyone that has had just the seals replaced still had the problem

I noticed while washing my car that the "plastic" strips that run from front to back on the roof next to the sun roof have a lot of play in them and cause a creaking sound. When the sun roof assembly is replaced, do they replace these strips as well? Just push on them and you can hear the creaking.

I'm pretty sure the strips are replaced as well, it was an entire sunroof assembly replacement.

We shall see. Riding with service manager today before accepting the car. If it's not fixed, they're keeping it and giving me something else to drive

Unfortunately I'm now in the same boat. I drove a few 2015 dealer demos (all ultimates) with less than 3k miles and no rattles.

I picked a 10,000 mile lease turn in and I have a rattle/creak right above my head when the pano roof is closed (not when it's vented). Also sounds like the front door seals make a similar noise when going over bumps/the car flexes.

Next oil change is in 4k miles, probably will just have them look at this then. It's a real shame, because the car is SO solid and quiet, this really detracts from that feeling.

ETA: I'm a December 2014 build date

Talk about the exact same issue I have. That sound is so annoying as it literally right above your head or something. Also I can hear a lot of rattle when I go over speed bumps. I mean it feels as if the car hasn't been put together correctly. I will get it checked out at dealership at next oil change. I have a problem with my closest dealer because they don't seem to take anything customers say seriously any issue I have they seem put it off as if we can't find anything wrong with it. Next time if I can't get this issue resolved, I have to contact hma directly and see what they say. Honestly I wana love this car and I truly do. But this whole customer service is getting beyond my patience. I am always having to tell myself hey look you spent less this is what you get. Have 2 more years left on my lease. If the customer service doesn't improve I have no choice but to switch to another brand. I hope the Genesis brand they launch will change the customer service.

OK good news, car came back yesterday with seals replaced around the pano roof, as well as driver door seal (was torn and making noise) and the control knob replaced (finish was already wearing off). Everything is great now, very quiet. I have to wait 5 days to open or vent the roof, we'll see how things go from there. Fingers crossed!

Definitely have a tech or service manager ride with you and point the issues out. I did that and followed up with an email - a picture of each problem and the request to fix it. Stuff like this can't be over communicated IMO, worst case open a case with Hyundai.

The real shame here is that issues like this aren't a TSB or recall yet. It's a widespread problem.

Took mine in Monday for sunroof rattle(when vented) for the second time. Squeals like a pig when closed too. Not sure they even tried to fix it the first time. Said they need to take the car to a body shop to remove the sunroof to diagnose. Could take the entire week. At least they gave me a loaner.

My 2015 Genesis 5.0 with 10k miles is making noises when in full open mode as I go over uneven surfaces. Also, because of wind noise, I have the moonroof curtain closed most of the time. Is this justification for them to replace the sunroof entirely? Also, how should I "sell" the problem to them so they won't make excuses and take no action?

Thanks,
Paul

It is a known issue that they should replace. If they play dumb, they can talk to Tim Machuca at Sterling McCall Hyundai in Houston TX. He just did mine. Service manager.

I've had my 2015 3.8 Ultimate (Oct 2015 build date) in three times for the sunroof rattle with no luck. Last time the dealership had the car almost three weeks. They notified HMA and were told it is a design defect in the rollers and there is no known fix (this was in May). The dealer told me to keep checking back with them periodically to see if a service bulletin gets put out. I had a fresh-off-the-truck 2016 Genesis loaner the whole time and it didn't have a single rattle or squeak in the over 1,000 miles I put on it.

From what I am reading here though, it seems like replacing the whole sunroof assembly might be the answer? I'm wondering why this was a potential fix for certain people before May of this year when I was told there is no known fix.

My 2016 (4,500 miles) has now developed a rattle when open on uneven roads (even rattles when you shut the door when roof is open) so will be going to the dealer like the 2015 did. Might be time to switch brands - unacceptable design defect in a car of this price point. I suspect the 2017's will have this issue too. Damn shame as I like the car, otherwise.

So the picture above with the cracked seal is what mine looks like. I showed the tech and he didn't understand what was wrong with it. So we wandered over to the new car section to inspect some models. There was a mix of cracked seals and not cracked seals. It appears these things don't last very long. He said he was going to look into it, but it's been a week and I haven't heard anything.

Should I contact Hyundai direct? Who would I talk to?

Had same work done on our 2015 Genny last week. Hyundai replaced the weather stripping around the fixed pano panel. Took a few days. It will take a few days to double check it has fully fixed it. But we're definitely hopeful. In other news. Our dealership has been excellent. They immediately went to weather-strip replacement based on a tsb in canada.

You can still barely hear something in mine, only with the sunshade open though. Definitely not as loud as before, curious to see how mine fares over time and through the winter!

Starting to figure this whole rattle thing out. Took mine in for a sunroof rattle - Fairfax Hyundai fixed that but then I notice the whole roof creak/rattle. Took it to Hyundai of Chantilly they say seals were not replaced correctly. They performed the fix and say rattles are gone. Chantilly also said there are new seals pending but Hyundai hasn't sent them out yet?

If you go to a Hyundai dealership and look at a bunch of new Genesis, you will notice at least half of them have seals that aren't seated correctly between the two glass panels.

I'm wondering if there is a defect in the manufacturing of the vehicle. I'm wondering how to make Hyundai aware of this problem in such a way that they can issue a TSB on the problem. I'm worried that down the road the seals will cause an issue.

Agreed - this is a defect that has potential to create issues. For awareness, you can contact Genesis /Equus Customer care (HMA) and open a case.

My 2015 had this seal separating and the seal was replaced - it held up for the remaining 4 months that I had that car. So far, my 2016 (that was built in July 2015 and I picked up in mid January) is showing no sign of this seal separation.

Unfortunately, I do have some significant rattles in the sunroof (more when open, but still there when closed) and it has gotten worse over time. The car is being dropped off at the dealer on Monday and I am getting in touch with HMA again as well. Too bad - great car let down by what appears to be a poor sunroof design.
