Tilt Telescopic Steering Wheel

Well my Genesis is going back in for the fourth time to fix the tilt on the steering wheel. I was so sure that the last fix was a good one that I had the car re-badged. The wings are really nice (front, back and wheels). Now I am debating whether or not to file the paperwork for the Florida Lemon Law. The car has already spent 17 days at the dealership for this issue during the last three visits to fix this. In Florida, its three unsuccessful fixes or 15 days out of service to apply for help via the lemon law. I am hoping Hyundai offers a solution before I have to wait for arbitration. Will let you know what happens.

I am in the same situation. My quandry is if they can't fix mine why would a new Genesis or Equus be any different? Until people report them to NHTSA (National Highway Traffice Safety Administration) and report a safety issue, instruments including speedo are blocked, there is no extreme urgency for Hyundai to find a fix. The difficulty they are having in finding a fix indicates a very complicated problem probably relating to software and hardware IMO.

What would I get if I lemonized my Genesis?

First, my dealer is a large volume dealer and they claim that my Genny is only the second one to ever have this problem at this dealership. Not sure about that but that is what they say. Secondly, through all of this we have had a 2011 loaner for 14 days and it did not have a problem with the steering wheel tilt. So if you can somehow get them to do a buyback or an upgrade to a 2011 model you should be okay. My dealer has no 2010 Genesis Sedans on the lot and fourteen 2011 models on the lot.

Well, I just took my Genesis in for an oil change and the tilt steering wheel issue. When I made the appt. over the phone, I asked for a rental since I knew this would be an all day event and he (The Service Manager) said he would have to get approval for that. He calls back and says, ok I got the rental for you and the part is in. Ok great...thinking, I'll get a Genesis. Maybe 2011 to check out. The day of the appt., I get there and the service guy doesn't know about the rental. Service Manager comes out and says "oh yeah...he has rental...Enterprise will come and pick you up". Okkkaaayyy...guess no Genesis even though there were about 10 sedans on the lot. Waited for Enterprise...nobody shows up. The dealership decides to shuttle me over there where they "hook me up" with a Hyundai Elantra. Later that day the car was fixed (as of now) and I had to return the car back to Enterprise where they then drove me back to the dealership. Remember, my dealership was doing me a "favor". :-O

At least my Genesis was fixed in one day.

BTW, I said to the regular service guy that checked me in "you know...if Hyundai wants to compete for BMW or Lexus owners, don't you think the least you could do is offer a rental car and not have to haggle for it? He didn't have much to say.

In the end, I hope this solves the intermittent steering wheel issue.
You may want to move to Florida. My dealer provides free loaners for all Genesis and Equus owners and a free car wash.

If you have any other models, it's first come first serve on the loaner only...

Hyundai policy is that Equus owners will receive complimentary loaners so the claim by your dealer is no big deal - The loaner is supposed to be another Equus or a Genesis

Getting a loaner for a defective car isn't the issue. The issue is finding a permanent fix for the problem.

One 2011 without a problem doesn't mean it doesn't still exist. There are many 2010 without the problem also.

That was exactly my point, because someone above said why bother trying to do a buy back since the new car would have the same problem. I think it is worth pushing Hyundai to fix this issue and not just give up.

I read through this thread and am sad to report that my 2011 4.6 has the same tilt/telescoping problem. Have an dealer appt scheduled for this Thursday for them to take a look. However, still loving the car, see this as a minor annoyance for now!

I just had the steering column replaced to repair the tilt as it did not go up high enough to clear the top of the instrument panel. The telescope action worked fine. After the install, the tilt was fixed and then the telescope stopped working. They are getting another column and will re-install next week. I have to wonder if the installer messed up, who knows.
On a related subject, I initially took the car to my local dealer to look at it. He told me he would have to talk to California as different vehicles would travel different distances. I told him I sat in a 2010 and it worked the way I thought it should, but he still insisted each car is different. Anywho, he promised to call back and never did. I called, and he asked for the build date which I gave him (this is available to them with the VIN). Never called back again. Needless to say, will never be using the dealership again, not even for an oil change! (David Mauss Hyundai, Deland, Florida). Drove further to Orlando and got the service one would expect.

Yep, this problem bit my car as well. I set the DIS to easy entry/exit for the tilt wheel when I bought the car. About three months in, the wheel started making a slight squeaking sound after the ignition was turned off and the steering wheel shifted out of the way. This caused me to research, and I read the TSB about the tilt problem and pondered turning the off the easy entry/exit feature, but decided what the heck, if it's going to go I might as well hurry the process along. Well, it went this week. The car is a 2010 with 9,600 miles and is 6 months old.

Given the fact that I've already had a piece of body trim repaired and also had the problem with the DIS control knob not functioning properly, I'm beginning to grow a little disillusioned with this MB/BMW wanna-be. I really love the car, but warranty trips to the dealer every two months are a PITA I just won't tolerate.:(

The steering column on my 2011 V6 (1400+ miles) was replaced on 10/27. The tilt was better, but still not the full tilt as when I bought the car. I also noticed after the repair that the steering wheel was now askew/slanted slightly to the right when driving straight. It is just enough to be annoying. Then, on 10/30 when I parked the car and shut it down, the tilt retracted the full amount. Why it self-corrected I do not know. I took a picture of the steering wheel position then so i can show the dealer if the tilt stops working again. I'm sure it will. In the meantime, I plan to take the car back to get the steering wheel slanting fixed. I believe that was caused when the steering column was replaced on 10/27. These are irritating problems for a new car.

Whats irritating is that they have no permanent fix everything lasts for a short-time and returns.

I had mine fixed last week. Like others of you, it self corrected once or twice then quit going up at all. The tech said my 2010 did NOT have the two limiter switches that other 2010's had. My steering column looked more like a 2011 he said. I have a very late build 2010 (May), so maybe Hyundai changed the steering column and eliminated the limiter switches later in the year??

Anyway, it works for now.

I may be out of my mind, but I swear the seat also goes back further now on exit. I noticed when the steering wheel was limited that I also could not move my seat back very far. What would the steering column have to do with the seat having a limited amount of travel?

I think that the issue involves the interface of the switches with the software in the memory chips. I had the tilt problem one time in my 2011 and when I allowed the seat and steering wheel to finish cycle before putting it in drive the problem went away. Since then we always let it finish before moving from park. Guess I will see what happens as time goes by.

I believe the same control module controls both seat movement and tilt steering wheel movement.

Here is the latest after 2 previous repair attempts. They replaced the steering column (again), control module, and checked all wiring for loose connections and/or shorts.

There was a Hyundai Tech Rep present when they worked on the car. The steering column was replaced again beacuse (you can choose from the answers I got) Hyundai wanted the malfunctioning back for study or the replacement is a letter version but no one could/would tell how it differs from prior version.

Dealer now admits that issue is a known problem which was confirmed to them by Hyundai rep. Still no one can tell me what caused or is still causing the problem.

Took mine in today for the steering wheel issue. Service tech called and asked if anyone else had worked on the car. (5 months old, 3800 miles, 4.6 with Tech).

I said no and he told me the telescoping switch was not there...

Perhaps they did change the mechanism for some of the later builds (Mine was ordered and purchased in June).

Will let you know if I find out anything else...

Well .... it's been a couple of weeks and starting a few days ago my tilt is slowly not going up as far. Seems a little worse each day. Guess I'll be taking it in again.
I have to believe it's the control module because the seat didn't move back very far before the fix a couple of weeks ago. And remember, I don't have the limiter switches which apparantly are not in the late 2010 builds.
