If you look behind the plate there are two soft pads on the trunk located towards the bottom, which protects the paint.
I had your thought at first too, and I wanted to know how a luxury car made by Hyundai provided a solution for this, and I was impressed. The pads work great.
The pads keep the plate off the paint, but are not thick enough to keep the frame, which wraps around the outer edges of the plate, off the paint.
It's an easy fix. I purchased extra pads and stuck them between plate and frame. The point is their design is cheap and I guaranty for most people the dealer threw the dealer frame on the car with little regard for the paint. This will vibrate off the paint every time the trunk is closed unless you are aware of the issue and do something to prevent it.
