When will the 2015 Hyundai Genesis be at dealerships?

I went through this supply/demand issue with two previous cars, the Infiniti G35 Coupe when it first came out (2002/2003) and the Range Rover Sport (2006). Yes, I'm a sucker for 'hot' new models.

In both cases, the dealer would NOT charge over MSRP but had me put a deposit down to secure my spot in line.

I hope the dealers that chase short term profit by adding an additional markup get hurt long term by not getting as much inventory (I think the more you sell, the more you're allotted in the future).

I called 3 Hyundai dealerships. 2 of them are adding a markup to the car. Pretty obvious which dealer I'm going to buy from, even if I have to wait a bit.


Yes, supply and demand is what it boils down to. In the case of the Genesis charging over msrp will be very short lived as supply quickly catches up and the small number of first-adopters willing to pay the premium are satisfied.

Dealers often get around charging over msrp by adding things like pin-striping, window etching, etc to rationalize/justify the mark up.

Maybe dealers looks at this way: the % of the dealerships customers shopping the Genesis, especially in it's first few weeks, is a very small part of his business so the number of people he may turn off is relatively small so the risk he takes for the extra $$ is worth it. And, since the incidence of purchase can be 5 to 10 years.....time heals all wounds.

Dealers have been doing this forever, so they must have learned that no matter how distasteful it is to some shoppers, many accept it as common practice so it's "good" business in the long run.
 
Charging a $7995 markup on a car with a $39,0000 MSRP is a 20% markup. I suppose people have paid even more to have the latest and greatest products at launch.
 
So I was told today by the dealership that Hyundai stockpiled these cars at the port and is now just delivering them out to the dealers. I got 3 phone calls from different dealers saying they are here. I asked about the 5.0 Ultimates and I was told they are not even building them yet. Has anyone seen a 5.0 Ultimate? Just curious.
First rule of being a salesman: If a customer asks you about something you don't have in stock, tell them it doesn't exist.

I agree that dealers who add to the MSRP will lose customers in the long run. I assume they may jack up their price to hold on to the car since there are not many out yet to buy. It brings people into the show room. I would totally avoid a dealer that marked up a car. If they are doing that, what else do you think they are doing?

The Chevy SS which just came out was marked up by some dealers but the manufacture frowned on the mark up, so some of the dealers added the scotch guard, etc etc extras to justify the mark up.

I also think it's a poor practice, but, if you think about it, MSRP is what it says it is, a "suggested" price and we don't complain when the selling price drops way below it.

Agree completely. And I'm somewhat surprised that so many folks think that any car dealer wouldn't try to extract every penny they can from customers, be it sales or service. Even the best of the dealers I've dealt with for over 50 years would take advantage of their customers if they could get away with it.

Maybe I'm too cynical in my old age, or maybe I've been in California too long;)

I'm not that cynical, but you are probably right. In the end, it is the consumer who chooses to be fleeced, or is willing to pay a wasted premium on driving a newly launched car for a few weeks that doesn't visually even stand out from the pack that much anyway. The Hyundai dealer employee lounge was be filled with riotous laughter with every recounting of the story of the guy who paid over list for a car which will trade soon starting up from invoice.

That's how we might look at it, but to that person who enjoys being first-on-the-block, its worth every penny. So everybody's happy.
 
After I sat in a beautiful red '15 Genesis last week, I was more than happy to climb back into my paid-for '12. My seats are comfy, if not perfect. My radio/Nav is just great, if not perfect. My suspension and handling beat a Lexus ES, if not perfect. Life is good.

The new Genesis is a nice step forward, but not a price step that I am ready to take at this time, or anytime soon. I hope Hyundai knows what it's doing. Going forward, it will be much more difficult for them to draw prospective buyers from the higher end of the plebeian brands. Also, I used to think that the '15 would quickly decrease the value of the first gen Genesis. Now I am thinking just the opposite.

I would have to disagree with you on the ride of the ES 350 vs the Genesis gen 1. Both my brother and my father have the Lexus and I get in and out of them continuously. The ride is no question better in the Lexus, not night and day but definable better. As for handling, not sure as I never push any car to extremes or hard enough to justify a comparison. I will clarify I am comparing to an Rspec which may be stiffer to a non Rspec.
 
While the ride in the early Genesis equipped w/ the horrible OEM Dunlops is probably worse, would not be surprised if the ride in the post '12MY Genesis is better than the current ES.

Toyota, in a failed attempt to make their offering more sporty - stiffened up their suspensions all around, but really just ruined their formerly compliant rides.

There have been numerous complaints about the ride for the Camry, ES, Avalon and Corolla.

Nowadays, Kias have the better ride than Toyotas.

Optima > Camry
Cadenza > ES/Avalon
Forte > Corolla (even the Soul has gotten nods for its ride over the Corolla).


It is puzzling that Toyota engineers got the suspension tuning so wrong when by all accounts they did a pretty good job w/ the GS.
 
Just bought the GS and yes it does ride noticeably better than my '11 4.6. Never drove later model Genesis so can not comment. GS is also definitely more engaging to drive. I have only good things to say about my Genesis...great car.
 
This is a good question and I've seen a few people discussing when their local dealership will get the 2015 Hyundai Genesis on their lot. If you've got a date from your dealer, please reply here...

I talked to Mark at Hyundai in Danbury CT and they will receive the new cars on the 15th of this month. I have setup a test drive for the 17th....like Bart Scott said "CAN'T WAIT"!!!!
 
I would have to disagree with you on the ride of the ES 350 vs the Genesis gen 1. Both my brother and my father have the Lexus and I get in and out of them continuously. The ride is no question better in the Lexus, not night and day but definable better. As for handling, not sure as I never push any car to extremes or hard enough to justify a comparison. I will clarify I am comparing to an Rspec which may be stiffer to a non Rspec.

My comments on the Lexus ES related to the same model year as my car, 2012. After all, that's when I made my purchase. I would certainly hope that by now Lexus has made some improvements. I did sit in a '13 Lexus once and noted that the front seats were more uncomfortable than my Genesis. The sides of the seat bottoms curve upwards too much for my liking. The main point of my post above was that we should appreciate the fine car that the first gen Genesis is. I'm still quite content, even after seeing the '15 in the flesh.
 
I test drove a 3.8 signature package this afternoon because my local dealer didn't have any 3.8 ultimate packages in stock at the moment. Compared to my 3.5L Maxima, this car even though heavier has more pick up. I found there to be an ever so slight delay between when you punch the pedal and when the car actually picks up. Nonetheless its not a deal breaker at all. The car rides very smoothly. The standard infotainment system was very nice. Can't wait to see the 9.2" screen and heads up display. The car has more than adequate power for those who want a balance between power and fuel economy. The car is simply beautiful on all fronts. Loving it. 20140509_114925.webp

Drove an Ultimate earlier today. For those of you debating whether to splurge for the Ultimate Package or not, here's how I'd assess each feature (ranked in order of what would make me want to splurge):

1. Heads Up Display. Absolutely loved it. Yes, you don't really "need" it, but if you want to simultaneously feel like you're in a video game, in an episode of Knight Rider, and in a six figure car, it's a must-have feature.

2. DIS Multimedia Controller. This is probably the most notable visual difference inside an Ultimate. The non-ultimate's actually look a little bare in the spot in front of your arm rest.

3. 9.2" screen. Very nice. The bigger size just looks better to begin with. I did not have a chance to play around with it much though.

4. Power Trunk Lid. Loved it (thought about ranking this as #2...but that would make everyone think I'm a 90 year old grandma). I don't really care about the auto open (I think that's on non ultimates too), but the push button close is really nice (and fast). We have it on our SUV too...once you get used to being lazy, you love being lazy.

5. 17 vs. 14 speakers. Stereo was decent in both upgraded trims. I have not heard the base model's stereo.

6. Matte Wood. Totally personal taste. I like it better than the super shiny stuff, but I would have preferred a stitched leather dash. The matte wood comes off as more "conservative" than "premium" to me.

7. CO2... seems to get a lot of press buzz... but I wonder if it would ever turn on. I'm not a doctor, but it sounds a little gimmicky.

Thanks for the write up! Now that you have said all of that, I am even more ready to pickup my 3.8 Ultimate. Just waiting one of the dealers in my area to get a black one in stock with black interior. Can't wait.

What are you expecting to pay for it? MSRP, above MSRP, below MSRP?
