2015 Hyundai Genesis V8 vs V6

From the reviews I'm reading, it sounds like the V8 is really only good for bragging rights. The car weighs 400lbs more with the V8 and apparently doesn't even handle as well as the V6 without the CDC suspension...

Yeah, it does seem like that is the consensus from several of the reviews. Sounds also like the Dampening Suspension does little to add to the sportiness. It is beginning to sound like a V8 sport model may be the best ticket to take advantage of the weight and cost of the extra two cylinders - maybe later. I guess no different than the R-Spec, but had hopes for more from the V8 model.

I'm thinking that Hyundai set up the 5.0 as more of a luxo-cruiser (appears the shifts aren't as quick as on the 3.8) and that they are saving all the things that go into a sport-oriented sedan into an R-Spec (or whatever they will call it) - at least I hope so.

Seems like the V6 equipped right (and getting a decent discount from MSRP after a few months) will be the bargain of the lineup.

I forgot to look. No difference at the bottom of the rear bumper? I can't look right now.

The V6 has always been stout so I don't expect that to change. Still I expect the 5.0 to be at least 6/10ths faster and have a much better snarl when the right exhaust is added. You definitely don't lose too much opting for the 3.8(not like the more than 2 seconds you forfeit getting the 3.6 CTS over the V-Sport). The 5.0 may not habdle as well as the 3.8 without CDC, but I don't expect it to; it weighs more. All the more reason to get the CDC and have the best if both worlds. I also don't expect such a huge disparity in weight between the 3.8 and 5.0.

What can ya do? The V8 will certainly be faster and WILL walk the V6 in a race but the V6 performs so well it's just not that much of a difference. As mentioned above, however, the exhaust note will be much nicer when modified...

I think the v6 will account for at least 90% of sales in Canada. Gas and insurance prices, the initial hit to the wallet and the very expensive ticket costs for speeding in Ontario.

18 miles per gallon in the city and 29 highway for the non AWD V6 with the AWD model gets 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway rating. V8: 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway...

We don't have a gas guzzler tax. We just pay that tax every time we fill up no matter how good the mileage is on your vehicle.
And besides, we have 11 months of winter and live in igloos.

I recently drove both cars at a Media Launch of the 2015 Genesis as a member of the Hyundai Think Tank. I drove each car about 100 miles on all kinds of terrain including mountain roads and your impression is correct. Anyone buying the V8 is wasting their money and buying it because they can. There was not much of a discernible difference and in fact the V6 seemed to handle better because of the weight balance.

I have to tell you though, both are amazingly refined premium cars in "EVERY" respect and after owning both a 2011 and a 2013 Genesis I can say with authority that this new Genesis is a quantum leap forward from those vehicles. All I can say is WOW!

The cost is about $5,000 higher for a fully loaded V6 but for that you get Lane Keep Assist, a 9.2" Nav, Real Matter Wood and Aluminum bits on the dash, a full color Heads Up Display that is so nice to use, Much improved leather seats (As good as anything out there) and its still between $10K and $20K less when comparably equipped competitors. Yes, this time the competition has something to be afraid of.

Thanks Bill. From all reports that I have read, the V6 HTrac should provide sufficient performance. Just a shame that the LED fog lights are not available. Someone will come up with an aftermarket solution I am sure.

Are the LED lights another thing that's not available on any V6 model? If so, than there are a few reasons I might spend the extra money for the V8:

1. 19" wheels
2. Quad exhaust tips
3. Deeper exhaust tone
4. LED fog lights
5. Wide tires at the rear
