Hyundai Genesis: post up your compliments/stares/double takes thread

Re: 2015 Genesis: post up your compliments/stares/double takes thread

Getting into my car after a trip to the post office last week when a woman stopped her car, rolled down her passenger side window and shouted out to me "that's the best looking car I've ever seen". First time that has ever happened to me with ANY car I've ever owned.

Re: 2015 Genesis: post up your compliments/stares/double takes thread

I agree, I've already had several people ask me about it and I've only had the car for just over a week. It's definitely an attention getter. I also think it's only a matter of time before Genesis starts being associated with the typical players in this space by the average joe. Lexus started from the bottom and look at them now. This car has won more awards and accolades than the others and its the best looking car in it's class imo.

Just out of curiousity, why did you trade in the Equus? Was it too much car? I've always had a secret obsession with that car and kind of wanted one hah. Genesis was way more affordable though.

The Equus was awesome but my lease was coming to an end, I got lucky/slash negotiated a great deal on it a few years ago, lease payment was $430 with basically nothing down. I wouldn't have gotten it if it wasn't for that relatively affordable payment. I was concerned that the Genesis would be a huge step down, so far so good.

While driving around a community today, a bunch of school kids shouted together -"Is that a Bentley?"

Today two teen boys in a small pickup, stopped in front of my house to take pictures of the Coupe in my driveway.

Great, I'm sure they'd love to hear that in the coupe forum...

Pulled up behind a 3.8 Genesis yesterday. The license plate holder had Bentley across the bottom of it with the Bentley wings. When I passed the car the lady looked over and gave me a thumbs up as did I.

As I passed her, I could see her checking out my rear end which I removed the Genesis and 5.0 emblems. She quickly pulled over into my lane and followed me to the next red light. My guess is when she got home yesterday she removed her rear emblems. :D

Re: 2015 Genesis: post up your compliments/stares/double takes thread

A couple of weekends ago I was driving down a nice country road when I ended up following what I can only assume was the local Porsche club. They had a couple of older 911s, a 944, and a bunch of newer cars (911s, Caymans, a Cayenne, etc). As we passed a guy mowing his lawn, he completely ignored all of the Porsches, then stared at my Genesis the whole time it was in view.

Getting into my car after a trip to the post office last week when a woman stopped her car, rolled down her passenger side window and shouted out to me "that's the best looking car I've ever seen". First time that has ever happened to me with ANY car I've ever owned.

Did you get her number?:p

I had an opposite experience...I'll preface this with the fact that I am not a materialistic person and brand name is not a driving factor in buying something like a car for me...Hence why I chose the Genesis and the insane value you get over the Germans and Japanese counterparts. I am a Senior Manager at a bank and we had a manager offsite with about 20 of us total...All make decent money and drive nice cars. One of the jack@sses who didn't know crap about cars started announcing to everyone in the room that I drive a 'Kia', implying that my car is a piece of sh!t car based on where it's from. Clearly this perception is way outdated and false, but what I noticed is most commoners still associate this negative view towards Hyundai and Kia and laugh when they hear the words 'Hyundai luxury car.' Just a little frustrating that the common person doesn't realize how nice the car is and still associate the brand with economy sh!tboxes.

Therein is the the obstacle Hyundai faces to increase market share in this segment.

The power of brand is stronger than value, cost and expense, even in challenging economic times. I don't see that changing anytime soon and one has to understand that buying a car that is almost twice as expensive as its more known models of the same manufacturer is more visible than the value comparison to cars twice as expense from brand leaders in the segment. As Hyundai excels in customer ratings and value lists, it will help the Genesis, but for many it will be viewed as an expensive Korean car.

I was working in the HDTV business in the 2000s with both the Japanese and the Koreans, LG and Samsung. The Korean's commitment to quality was just as strong, or even stronger, than the Japanese. Essentially, they wanted to beat Japan at their own game, and in the process rise above everyone else (which in the car world would be MB, BMW, Cadillac, etc.) Korea didn't have 100+ years in the car business like the Big Three and the Germans, but I rode in a Samsung (yes, Samsung) taxi back around 2000 and thought "this is really nice. They are going to eat someone's lunch someday". Samsung was later forced to sell the car business to one of the other car companies.

Korean car companies are somewhat tight with the government, but after what's happened to GM and Chrysler, I consider that playing field to be level.

You should of asked him if he has ever heard of a Merc A-class or B-class?

There was an old story of an industrialist that would take prospective employees out to lunch. He would watch if they salted their meal before tasting or after tasting. If they salted their meal before, they failed and were not hired. His reasoning was that he wanted people who thought for themselves and made their decisions off of empirical evidence rather than habit.

If I were his manager, he would be on my watch list.

Not only is he a jackass, he also sounds like an ass****, and I bet other people in the room noticed too. DFWGenny nailed it; that wasn't a good move on his part.

That perception will evolve. Back in the 50s, "Made in Japan" meant "junk." In the span of 30 years, it came to mean some of the best quality products manufactured. It just takes a relentless pursuit of quality both on the engineering side as well as on the manufacturing side.

Your sentiments about wanting to beat the Japanese at their own game are exactly my observations from my visit to Seoul back in September.

Re: 2015 Genesis: post up your compliments/stares/double takes thread

Just an observation. There was a medium sized corner shopping mall close to us. It was not an indoor mall, but had an anchor department store with a strip mall area. The anchor store closed and the whole area went into a death spiral and the last time I had been in the area, it was pretty sad.

About a month ago, a friend and I were going out for lunch and since we did not have our timid stomached coworker, he suggested Korean. I was game. This run-down shopping area had been taken over by the local Korean community and it was vibrant! Almost all the storefronts were filled with local mom and pop businesses. It was refreshing to see.

I see Hyundai and KIA having that same hard work ethic. Dismiss them at your risk.

Re: 2015 Genesis: post up your compliments/stares/double takes thread

I think part of it is that Hyundai chose to release the Genesis and Equus under the Hyundai name instead of making their own separate luxury brand. I understand the economics of why they did this, but especially in this country perception is key with the luxury car market and the types of people who buy them. It will eventually turn, it already has to a large extent, but I think we still have a ways to go before people realize that Hyundai makes cars just as nice as MB and BMW.
