Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

This has been confirmed, and they resolved the problem by moving to a new set of rings.

So did they replace the motor? Or was it just the Rings? Seems extremely labor-intensive to tear the motor down and do such a thing. Also wondering about warranty on the work and where the new motor if that's what was done. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks

Also wondering about downstream issues with sensors and catalytic converters. Burning that much oil will definitely shorten the life of both of those things. I'm thinking they've got to be replacing the motor given the fact that the damage that has potentially occurred given the shortage of oil in the system at given times throughout the life of the vehicle, especially in a two owner situation would be difficult to assess..- going in tomorrow for an oil consumption test and compression test. They're having me drive the car on my next business trip which is going to be about 500 miles and then they're going to reassess when I bring it back. I'm definitely pushing for a new motor given the ridiculous amount of noise that I heard before I managed to actually check the oil thinking that that was the last thing that would ever be wrong with a car like this.

The statement refers to a revision in the manufacturing process.
Excessive consumption will be a new engine.

I have a 2012 Genesis 5.0 (non-RSpec)

Noticed this issue with my car since 7000 miles, currently havce 26K miles.

Went to the dealership to get my oil consumption measurement done.
I have posted it about it on this forum before.

The results are mine is drinking oil about 1qt / 1000 miles, "they" not the dealer, dealer contacted the Hyundai HQ and they said its normal.
The dealer told me they will keep eye on it so they told me to bring it in for oil change, if it gets any worse they told me they will replace the engine.

So far that dealership had 2 Equus that drank 2 quarts / 1000 miles.

Ridiculous. I am going to contact Hyundai Quality Assurance about the issue.

I've owned many cars, never seen any cars eat this much oil.
Not even the RX-7 consumes this much, and RX-7 specs tell you it drinks oil to cool the engine.
Cylinder engines should never ever drink oil unless the engine is old and worn out.

Good luck to others.

I'm trading that car in if this Hyundai Quality Assurance doesn't follow up.

I am fortunate (so far) because my 2012 Equus with 26,000 miles is not eating oil. Using 5w30 synthetic, at most 1/2 quart in 4,000 miles.

That being said, am watching carefully.....

It is just ridiculous to even be discussing oil consumption on a new car like this. There is no way that a car with 50,000 or even 150,000 should be burning anything near what we're seeing/hearing here. I just traded a 99 GS 400 with 300,000 miles on it and it burned 3/4 of a quart in 10,000-12,000 miles on Mobil 1. You couldn't find one manufacturer today that would agree that even 1/2 quart in 1000 miles would be near acceptable. It's just totally ridiculous. This isn't a 2 stroke motor ya know... I'm not going to be settling for anything less than a brand new 2014 engine. This is "warranty" work. The motor is "defective" and there's no question about that...I'll keep posting as things progress...

Calm down. To be fair to the issue, this has been documented for years and you took the risk. They'll take care of you.

Hi there,
What risk are we talking about?

Anyways, I just got off the phone w/ talking to Hyundai Genesis Customer Service Center.

They said there is not much they can do if the techline (the engineering dept of hyundai) says it was normal.
In my case the dealership service dept called up the techline regarding my specific 1 qt / 1000 miles consumption on the Genesis 5.0,
after verifying my consumption. They did the oil change, taped up the dipstick and the oil pan plug, and verified it 3 times during a 3000 mile observation.

If the techline dept gives them OK, you get a new motor or some kind of fix, in my case the techlines didn't.

They gave me the number to the BBB Auto Line.

I filed a complaint on the BBB Auto Line site, and might even talking to a lawyer about this.

Basically it is a lemon, a defect that isn't fault on the customer.

I never seen such consumption on a cylinder car right off the bat, I noticed it after my first oil change.

Build dates of the oil burners?

So this is what I have to look forward to? Just added 1/2 quart at 2200 miles, so I am OK yet at 26,000 miles.

What is the build date of the affected engine(s)? Any serial # on the engines available for those with the bad rings? My car was built 11/2011.

Anyone with oil consumption issues OUTSIDE of the power train warranty get any help from Hyundai? I am the second owner with over 60k miles which the 100k power train warranty does not transfer over for me. I called today to see if there is any help they can do and the service writer claimed he has never heard of any recalls or issues at all ( TYPICAL ). My next step is taking it in for a consumption test but being out of warranty I assume they will want out of pocket.

I bought a used 2012 R Spec, and have found the very same problem. I had the oil replaced with synthetic oil and had about 1000 miles to go before my next oil change when I noticed the engine knocking. Checked the oil i was about 3 quarts down, with no oil light. Oil didn't even touch the dip stick. Very scary.

I too see no oil leaks, had my oil change place check too they could see none and I don't seem to be burning oil.

Not good.

My 2012 Equus has started to use oil, about 1 quart/1,000 miles. Huge cloud of what appears to be black, not blue smoke when I accelerate quickly in one of the lower gears; looks like a diesel truck. Dealer says bring back to them for a couple days for analysis when I return from my vacation next month.

The car never touched a drop until about 27000 miles, now has 30,000.

Using synthetic 5w30 always changed every 4-5000 miles.

My build date is either Nov or Dec 2011.

I just traded my '12 R-spec with 53000 miles on a new Genesis. I first noticed my '12 using oil at 3000 miles, two quarts in 3000 miles. The dealer put it on an oil consumption test that lasted for two months until Hyundai said 1 quart per 1000 miles is normal for a high performance engine which most anyone with even limited knowledge of engines knows this is ridiculous. Even though the Service Manager agreed with me, he said there was not anything he could do. Since Hyundai would not agree to correct this problem, I decided to keep my car since I loved everything else about it even the cloud of black smoke with hard acceleration. .My oil consumption varied over the last 30000 miles. I went from changing my synthetic oil every 3000 miles to every 5000 and switched to 5W30. I do not know what effect, if any, this had as my oil consumption as it varied. I had three changes where I did not use any oil and was thinking the problem was corrected. This changed at 51000 when I was down 2 quarts in 3000 miles. This worried me to the extent that I decided to trade. You might question my judgment in staying with Hyundai but I really liked my R-spec even with the oil problem and Hyundai's lack of support. I drove the new 5.0 and the 3.8. I was more impressed with the overall performance of the 3.8 and decided to trade for it also taking into consideration that the 5.0 demand has waned significantly. I guess that my advice is, that if you like everything else about your R-spec, keep it and add oil when needed. If you do not or if you are too worried about the consumption then get rid of it because I do not believe you will get any help from Hyundai.

Black smoke on acceleration is not necessarily related to oil burning. Usually it means excessive fuel is being delivered or that fuel is not being burned efficiently. Oil usually burns blue or blueish white.

My '12 Equus, built in 11/2011 is having its engine replaced. (Long block) due to excessive oil consumption. It started to consume measurable amounts of oil after 27000 miles, when it had consumed almost none before. The car now has 31500 miles and was eating a quart of Quaker State 5W30 synthetic between 900-1000 miles after a fresh oil change.

I wrote a letter to the dealer outlining the issue and dates/mileage oil was added plus included two (one-quart) Wal-Mart oil receipts. The dealer contacted tech support, and then got approval to order a new engine for replacement next week.

At least Hyundai is standing behind their product with the help of my excellent Georgia dealer. (67 miles from Atlanta)
