2015/2016 Generation Genesis "Dislikes"

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

Is that across the board, or just for the base/lower trims?
I would like to know this as well. It has been something that has always bothered me with Audi -- they get great reviews for interior quality and yet the top of the dash and doors (except the A8 with options) is plenty hard enough to use as a writing surface.

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

^ Actually, came across an interesting thread regarding auto plastics from people who are very knowledgeable about plastics and according to them, hard plastics are more expensive to do correctly than the soft touch (in part has to do w/ the molding process, in particular, creating the molds).

Also, the top of the dash is the part that gets hit w/ the sun the most and while plastics can be made w/ varying UV protection, generally hard plastics do better than the soft touch plastics.

So maybe it is the right move for Hyundai - if they don't want to get complaints about degrading plastics (apparently, a common complaint for BMW).

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

-Lack of foglights on the V6.

I drove a V6 2015 last Friday, and this really bothered me too. Seriously, why would they not put fog lights on a premium luxury sedan? The car has ventilated seats. Automatic rain sensing wipers. My Santa Fe has fog lights. The Sonata has fog lights. The Elantra has fog lights. Hell, the Accent has fog lights!!! This is a serious omission, especially for somebody who lives in a low lying coastal area where we get incredibly dense fog.

Other than that, the car is amazing. But I just don't know if I can bring myself to buy a $40,000 car with no fog lights. This is just stupid. It makes about as much sense as the Hyundai/Kia cars where only the driver's seat is ventilated.

Frankly the answer almost has to be that some idiot at HMA decided differentiating the trims was more important than properly optioning them. Similarly to the fogs being available on many cheaper cars in their own line up, the heated rear seat is available down to the Elantra, but not on the "Ultimate" 5.0 at $55k? The real kicker is that both (v6 fogs, and v8 heated rears) were available on the 2014 and removed from the 2015 despite an $8k increase from 14Rspec to 15Ult.

I suspect they were concerned about the MSRP creeping up too high, and they set hard dollar limits for each trim level, then put in the options that they would sell the most cars but not exceed those limits.

I suspect you are right as the led fog lights must retail for at least 500-700 each in the world of rediculous OEM auto pricing. In fact my previous totaled :( 2010 4.6 had over $4000 in just the 2 front hid assemblies. Yet they come as standard equipment on even the base model V6 in Canada. I cannot figure these guys out. Maybe they think Canada is foggy like London? Little do they know we live in igloos year round and usually cross country ski to work :D

It's absurd. Does that car really need 4 different trim levels on the V6 model? They really should have 2 trim levels, and a selection of engine and AWD. The bare minimum model shouldn't even be available. The first option package should be the base model, and then the fully loaded car with all 3 packages should be the premium model. Do we really need things like radar cruise control and rain sensing wipers? No, so put them in the higher priced model. But the base model should come with fog lights, a sunroof, bluetooth, and navigation. They're trying to compete with the Lexus GS, the E Class, and the 5 series. But they seriously shot themselves in the foot with the options packages for this car. I just might have to wait for the 2016 model, when they hopefully get their senses together.

One interesting thing I heard the other day from the salesman, is they're clearing out the Equus to make room for the next model year. So, the $60,000 Equus is selling for $45,000. The Equus is in Genesis price territory right now.

The only other thing I can say is making options dependent on the V8 is also stupid. Some people will spend the extra money for a V8 model no matter what, but most people will opt for the V6. It has plenty of power and uses a lot less gas. Gas is REALLY expensive. But now if I want fog lights I have to get the V8? That's really stupid. You can get a bag of like 500 LED's shipped to you from China for about $5 on ebay.

I'll be interested to see if anyone can figure out a way to retrofit the pieces from the V8 model to give fog lights to a V6.

Hmmm, you just described the Canadian offerings. We get no stripped down V6, and therefor only 3 choices. All cars come with standard fog lights. IMHO Hyundai did a better job on the packages up here.

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

1. Needs a strip of chrome or brushed-nickel on the backside to get it past the Elantra look.

2. The flying (H) needs to take a flying leap.

have you test driven a V6? I took one out yesterday (Technology) and it felt like a lot of HP was missing compared to my 2010 V6, likely due to the AWD. I did not find any way of turning off the AWD, just ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT modes. The handling was definitely improved by the AWD. The ride felt different but I"m not sure it is better or not, just different. The interior seemed to have more road noise, but not a lot more. Leg room in the front has shrunk. The trunk is markedly smaller. The seats have a better quality leather, but lack bolster adjustments on the seat pad (only on the back). The real wood trim is a very nice touch, the brushed aluminum trim pieces are a step back from the chrome on the older models IMO.

The electronics have improved, lots of new features. (cannot comment on the NAV since the SD card was not installed. IF the drivers seat is fully back, the NAV is difficult to reach. The NAV was touch screen, no joy stick like on the older Tech V6's. Access to all the buttons except the NAV and aux power, and the USB ports is very good. Blind spot and lane assist worked very well, and were not overly alarming, a soft ding and a gentle vibration in the steering wheel. The sound system (14 speaker) seems a step back. The HUD is a nice addition and well implemented.

at $55,123.15 for the V6 Technology or $64,123.15 for the V8 I'll be keeping my 2010 Tech.

Yup. I was looking at one at the dealer last night and just can't get past the rear end. Too plain.

And $50k+ for a V6 is just

While this may be true, it doesn't explain their choices at all. Who here cares about the CO2 sensor and associated automatic recirculate? Even if only 10% of V8 buyers would care about heated rears and steering that has to affect more purchases than a CO2 sensor. Similar logic applies to the V6 fogs. Not to mention they must think they're worth something to the buying community as they explicitly advertise the heated rears on the Elantra.

Considering the ratio of feature set to price of the current Azera, the upcoming Sonata (which will now include most of the Genesis' new features like the smart trunk), and even the outgoing Genesis I find it very hard to believe Hyundai was up against the wall with these optioning decisions.

While OEM auto pricing is ridiculous it doesn't translate 1:1 to factory cost by any means. "At dealer cost" still includes a huge factory markup in most cases.

I don't know what LEDs they actually use, but LEDs are not expensive by any stretch. Cree XML2 run <$5 each when you buy by the thousand. I have a flashlight with one of these bulbs and it's easily as intense at mid-beam as a run-of-the-mill HID headlight. It doesn't have nearly the spill (which is why you put 5 or so per side in the foglight strips). Sure, they need a harness, switch, etc. But the actual real cost to install LED foglights from the factory when those lights have already been developed for another model is almost certainly <$150 total.

I suspect this is the marketing department. The CO2 story is a good lead for press and is not offered on other cars. It's usefulness aside, it is something they can say is unique to the Genesis as way to promote the car - rear seat heaters are not.

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

No AFLS, headlights do not go through the movements like the old lights did and they definitely don't follow the road as your turning. They do still load balance when you first get in to make sure the lights are aimed at the ground. I was testing it this evening, it's not anywhere in the owners manual or on the Monroney sticker (5.0 Ultimate).

Now my guess of why it's not on the new car is because of the Auto high-beams, when they turn on the road in front of you is flooded with an incredible amount of light. I'm getting ready to post some pictures of the lights in a separate post.

Rear chrome on New Gemesis vs New Sonata. Which do you like more?

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

Not a fan of chrome, but that picture shows why the rear of the new Genesis is getting panned by many - it looks like a Sonata.

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

For me I like the chrome on the 2009-2014 Genesis. It looks more luxurious than the 2015 MY, especially the rear end and Im not a big fan of it. With the cost of the 2015 V8 Ultimate Im now considering the Equus. It seems to be more of the car I want to be in. IMHO !

I hear you. One issue is the ride on the Equus - don't want to have to have a boaters license to drive one.

Re: 2015 Genesis "Dislikes"

I guess Im at the age that I do want a nice land yacht ride. I really dont want to 'feel the road'. I had a 09 and 12 Genesis. Ive felt 'the road' for too long.
