  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Audio problem

Ok haven't checked the amplifier SW but a check of HU SW reveals 13.001. Certainly less than the 13.510. I wonder if my service will do an update for a vehicle not listed on the TSB? I'll find out soon.

I might have found a fix for the "Genesis Audio Problem".

I have experienced it only once in the six months I've owned my 3.6 with Tech, but today I spoke with the Brian Standiford of Smolich Hyundai here in Bend, OR and related my experience and that many others on The Genesis Forum. I mentioned that the typical dealer solution is to put in a new head unit and that many users soon reported additional failures and / or a dramatic loss in sound quality.

He nodded and said that he knew exactly what I meant. He said that he used to work at a Mercedes dealership and pointed out that the MB cars use this same Lexicon system (which I already knew, plus the fact the the only other manufacturer using it is Rolls Royce).

He told me that when customers complained of the audio problem, he found that it was probably caused by loose pins in the female connector in the harness which the head unit plugs into.

He said that over time a loose connection can cause some electrolysis corrosion at the connection point and that, plus the loose pins, apparently cause the audio to fail.

I asked how they can "tighten" connector pins and he said they have a simple tool (pliers?) to do it. He said that he also added some anti-corrosion paste to the connectors.

So simply replacing the head unit fails to address the root cause (loose pins) and that's why the problems keep coming back. My guess is that it also might explain the poor audio quality.

Here's hoping this really works. Let me know if you try it out.

Dandydon in Bend, OR

Dandy I wouldn't be suprised if there exist a simple reason and fix for the issue...what does suprise is what appears to be either ignorance or silence from Hyundai. Until this recent TSB there was no offical word that a problem existed. A call to my service center resulted in a "bring it in and let us keep it for a few days and see if we can duplicate the problem" response...hmmm no thanks for now. Another HU (probably refurbished by Lexicon) will probably have the same issue and possibly more (read the earlier posts). Thanks for the info. I'm sitting on the sidelines hoping the issue dosen't occur on an extended trip or other inconvinent time and that "THE FIX" will appear (this new TSB or something along the lines of your comments may be just the ticket)

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I keep wishing that every poster would add his/her specific vehicle details to their Signature here. It's simple to go into your profile and add that info. Then when you make a comment about your car, we can all see what the hell you are driving! Just click on USER CP in the menu above to add your personal info.

Great idea. Also, if you have the Tech Package, please add your current HU S/W version and UTA S/W version.

Had this very occasional problem in my 2009 tech. Have had my 2012 for a month and seen( heard) it once. So far a shutdown and restart works. When I mentioned it to the Service Manager and Sales Manager , they just shook their heads.
Love the car, can live with it occasionally:D

"When I mentioned it to the Service Manager and Sales Manager, they just shook their heads"...what does that mean? Are you saying that they (the managers) are aware of this issue and/or disbeliving that the issue still exist. I swear if I had been told that there was a serious issue with the audio I would not have bought. I assume that the recent TSB is Hyundai's answer...Hyundai's response is a little late in the day and too low key for me. If you were a potential buyer and savvy enough to read the forums prior to would you still buy?

I just checked my 2012 for TSBs and there is no mention of the Lexicon system at all in any document. Interesting.

We have a 2012 5.0 Rspec with 7K miles, having the audio mute issues and the surround un-checking issues among other things.... We took it to the Local dealer and were told they had to order parts, not sure what they ordered but i got a call today saying the parts were in. I am waiting to hear from the service writer to decide if i am taking it in. If the parts was the update package from the TSB then i might if it is a new head unit i don't know if i want to go that route yet. Its so frustrating that a global systemic issue is not dealt with better, and if i had known about all the issues we would have bought something else. Makes all the reservations i had about buying a Hyundai seem more realistic. I guess the old adage you get what you pay for comes into play. I sure hope this stuff gets fixed so we can enjoy the car instead of regretting buying it.

I went out today and started my Genesis and there was no audio at all. I tried changing all modes to get something and the radio was dead.
Without my tunes, I drove to get gas and shut off the engine. When I was finished gassing up and I started the engine, wallah I had tunes back. Does anyone have an explanation for this glitch? 2012 V6

I had the exact same problem with my 3mo old R Spec and it happens so infrequently that I just shut the car off and turn back on and yea back to normal.

I have had my R Spec for 3 mos. and the unchecking of the surround sound and the unselecting of driving features such as economy fuel driving is driving me nuts. I am a little concerned that you say they want to order parts. I think that once they start tinkering other things are going to go wrong???

If you have the Tech Package, next time you run into this no-audio issue or the voice command is not working, please try this:

Go to ENG menu (by pressing these buttons simultaneously: Disc/AUX, Navi/Menu, Back and the Volume Knob on the DVD player).

Go to the "Software Update" submenu and selet "To full ENG full mode". When you select it, it prompts for a key code.

If you have the old head unit with old NAV maps (2009 and 2010), first try entering ##0324#0704## as key code.

If you have a newer head unit (2011 or later) or upgraded the NAV maps, enter 0324 as key code. Once you enter the code, on the left hand side there will be few more menu items that make up the full engineering mode.

Select "Diagnostics" submenu then select "Reset Component". Select UTA. This should reset the Amplifier. If audio doesn't come back, try resetting the other components.

Please post results here.
Timeout, I have had my R Spec about 3mos and have encountered the audio problem surround sound and driver deselect prob such as Economy Driving selected on the steering wheel. I have just now tried your Tech resets and will let you know how they work.

Timeout

Thanks for the update. The next time that my system dies I will try your solution.

:)

This is for Timeout. On 6/13 I tried your suggestions for resetting the components. Alas, this did not fix the unchecking of certain settings. I will probably have to go the dealer route sad to say. Thank you anyway.

The procedure that I posted would only reboot the components. Your problem sounds to me like a different software bug that would not be solved after rebooting the HU and it would require a S/W update.

I now GENESIS2012RV had that same issue and that the dealer fixed it by replacing the Head Unit. But, without knowing what S/W version GENESIS2012RV got in his brand new Head Unit, we would not be able to tell for sure if the new S/W version available in the TSB 12-BE-012 would help in your case.

Update: I talked to the Service Manager at the dealer in Gilbert AZ. He indicated he had fixed a bunch of these radio issues and that they have never seen any of the issues after replacement. I told him about all the accounts i had found and he says what are you reading internet "Blogs" basically discounting everything that i was telling him. The "parts" they ordered was a replacement radio Head unit, i asked about the TSB and was told it does not apply to the 2012 MY. I said isn't it a waste to replace a head unit if a software update might fix it, he said we make good money changing these out so i don't mind, its what they are telling us to do. I asked him if the new unit causes new issues would they be able to just put the old unit back in and he said no he did not think they could. He said if the new unit had issues they would just keep changing it till it was right. We scheduled to take it in Tuesday but i really don't know if i want to, might wait a bit and see what they do about the software. Any thoughts, i am really torn, we want it fixed but i am worried the result will be worse than the current issue.

I can verify that the "service advisors" do what they are told. I had trouble with my iPod USB/Aux connector. Reading the service order after I left, I saw that they had to call Hyundai each step of the way. Hyundai had them (1) check the cord, (2) replace the radio with one from another car, (3) check the connection fitting on the connector and then finally (4) check the connector itself. They seemed to have to follow what Hyundai was telling them to do.

Just happened to mine yesterday after having my 2012 3.8 Genesis with both tech and nav packages. I was in the car getting ready to leave from work. Thought I had already pushed the start button and put the car in reverse. When I realized I hadn't started the engine, I pushed the button and nothing happened. Put the car back in Park and tried again. No audio. Not even from the navigation. Volume control showed nothing at all on the screen. Tried shutting the car off and restarting nothing.

Went to run my first errand to the dry cleaners. Normally leave the car running. This time shut it off and went in with my key fob. Came back out a couple of minutes later, started up the car, and everything is now okay.

Surround Sound was also unchecked with the no audio. Once I started the car after leaving the dry cleaner, everything functioning normally. SS is rechecked.

just experenced this for the 2nd time in a year. Everything audio did not work (radio, nav, bluetooth). I have not restarted yet. Both times it has occurred has been on hot days (for upstate ny)...I dont know if that triggers it? getting a little frustrated as I have had 3 electrical problems(drivers seat, window controls and now this).

Its been highs of 107 for the last 4 days at my home and no problems so most likely your problem is not caused from high temps.
