  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Brake Caliper Covers

Just to clarify.

MGP doesn't have the wing option. A customer would have to submit the artwork for them to produce it.

Sorry for any confusion. :o

Anyone have any idea if the RSpec Version is available yet?

Went down to MGP today where they installed my covers and here are the first shots.
Great folks and they are doing some amazing work with not only logos, but pin striping and other artwork that depending on the vehicle can look quite cool.
Ben and the MGP team are very professional, friendly folks who obviously care about their product.
Here are the pics.

Very nice. Can't wait to order mine.

I personally don't know of anyone who has this model. My brother just purchased a '12 4.6 and loves it. I tried to get him to go with the R-Spec but he wouldn't spring for it. Anyone who may live in the San Diego area and wishes to have their R-Spec used as a prototype for the caliper covers should know that their car will be provided with the covers (including installation) at no cost to them. The only stipulation is that you will get either the red, black or silver ones with the MGP engraving. If you want a custom color or engraving, you will have to pay that cost. That's what I did. Hopefully someone will step up to the plate and volunteer their monster car.

Bump. RSpec Owners in San Diego, please help to have this develope. Cheers.

I was skeptical upon reading but DANG, those look NICE!!!!! how much?

The cost varies depending on what you want. Basic covers in the three optional colors: red, black or silver with MGP engraved will set you back between $180 and $200. Custom engraving and custom colors are about $80 to $100 per option. The price is for a set of four covers. Just go to the company website, www.calipercovers.com or www.CARid.com to see the best prices. You can also call them at the numbers given online.

How difficult is the install on these? Is it simply taking off my wheel and 'snapping' these on somehow and securing them? Do I need a proffesional installation? (assume I have minor technical ability - engineer and can change my own oil, but don't want to do anything above my comfort level)

It will take you less than two minutes to install them per caliper. In fact the biggest time consumer is jacking the car up, removing the wheel and reinstalling it. Just click on the link in my reply before your question to me and watch their video. Two clips per cover slip into the caliper with a stud protruding from each clip. A nut with a star locking washer attached is installed over the cover after you slide it onto the clip. Tighten the nut and away you go.

Fortunate for us, there are plenty of people who love the benefits and simplicity of our caliper covers.

R Spec is now available! Thank you for your patience.

Hey Scott.

IMHO I would paint the stock brakes silver or black and call it a day. No need to call attention to a fake bbk. But like I said to each their own

I agree. My front calipers came painted black from the factory, but I painted my rear calipers black to match.

There are several solutions available for the unattractive factory calipers. You have to keep in mind that there are Elitists, Enthusiasts, and "Average Joe's" in the retail market and each will lean towards what fits them the best.

Personally, I consider myself an enthusiast. In fact, I just finished a budget stroker motor install on my project BMW E30 and went with a BBK up front. I went with a BBK because I needed it. I run a rear caliper cover set with a custom engraving to personalize my build.

For the most part, the Average Joe is not looking for a BBK. Especially with the price tag and all that is involved. Sometimes people forget that they may have to buy different wheels to make room for the BBK. On top of that, possibly new tires. A BBK starts off as an expensive modification and can get even more expensive, real quick.

Caliper painting. While this is a good bang for you buck modification, not everyone is willing to spend the time and effort involved. Plus, some calipers just look terrible. So now you're just making the ugly caliper red. Have you seen the calipers on some of the Audi's that have been on the road for a year? I sure would not want to tackle that rust job! It is a valid solution, but it's not for everyone.

Powder coating. If you are willing to deal with the price tag and down time, I prefer this solution over caliper painting. It will hold up better and longer. It's not as cost effective as caliper paint, but in general should hold up much better. The down time and price tag is usually the deal breaker for the "Average Joe".

Caliper Covers. IMO, this is the solution for the "Average Joe". One hour down time. Install and go. You're done. People seem to enjoy the reduced brake dust and simplicity of the installation. Options such as custom colors and custom engravings are nice selling points as well. MGP Caliper Covers offer a 3 year warranty on the powder coated finish. What's the warranty on caliper paint? (Not being smart, I really do not know)

As much as I enjoy being an enthusiast and doing major mods on most of my projects, I do understand that the majority of the aftermarket is with the "Average Joe's". Don't get me wrong, MGP Caliper Covers are not ONLY for the "Average Joe". MGP had over 100 vehicles sporting caliper covers at the 2011 SEMA Show. If you ever been to SEMA, you know the cars there are far from average.

I would be more than happy to answer any questions, or just expand on the discussion more. I know some have already made up their minds, and that's fine. My hopes is to clarify the options a little better to other shopping for their solution.

Thank you.

Paint the calipers? Been there, done that. Lots of work (at least eight hours worth) to do all four decently. Then, you can do it again in a year. The paint gets brake dust all over it, even when using ceramic or now ECB pads which supposedly produce the lowest dust possible. Washing the calipers with any decent detergent dulls the shine of the high temp paint. I've gone through this process on my wife's 2001 Lincoln LS-C for 11 years now. My new MGP covers look like the day they were installed and have no dust yet that can even be removed with my finger tip. They are very shiny because of the gloss clear coat and have no wax applied to them. I've lost count of how many positive comments I've received from other drivers and pedestrians. But, I'll say again, they are pricey. And of course, each to his own.

What!!! I would suspect that you did not use a quality caliper paint if you had to redo it in a year. That's seriously messed up. Also, how does one spend 8 hours painting calipers? Using a toothpick maybe:D In all seriousness if a high quality caliper paint is used, it will look great for many years to come. I did my wifes Sonata's calipers dark grey to match body paint in about 2 hours which includes two coats (and drying time) and it STILL looks like new. Did rear on Genesis to match front also. My brother was impressed at the quality of the caliper paint, so he bought it for his Legacy.

Years ago when I was 18, I used a high temp spray paint for this purpose, which is NOT the way to do it, and yup it lasts a year at best.

R1Concepts.com has great caliper paint. Damn near any color too. No ricer red for me:)

He's not as young as you. I would be lucky to be able to pull a wheel off on my own when I hit 61 years of age.

No offense Darth. :)

Good point Ben, but I feel my back hurting since I turned 30 last month:D

See how that back feels in another 38 years. But I can still pull wheels off and lug tires/rims to/from the basement twice a year.
