G70s in captivity...
This is Thursday midday at South Bay Hyundai/Genesis, as you can see in the pics. This is in Torrance, California, which is a "suburb" of LA (I put suburb in quotes because you couldn't possibly tell where LA ends and Torrance begins... LA is all one big suburb. I live in central LA just south of Hollywood. Took me about 50 minutes to go the 18 miles, mostly by freeway.)
A couple of quick thoughts:
Great car! I drove a 2.0T, sport trim. As much as I could tell in a 20 minute test drive, it is every bit the match of the Audi A4 I spent a few weeks researching and testing. Obviously the Genesis is much cheaper, so it's a much better value.
The stereo sounds to me to be excellent, but maybe not quite as good as the Burmester system (the upgraded system name) in my 2016 Mercedes GLC. Once again, hard to judge in 20 minutes. My conclusion though, is that it's good enough that I won't let it prevent me from buying a G70. Others may not care about the stereo much; I care a lot.
The very friendly salesperson told me in one week they had sold about 5 of them. I wanted to see a mid-trim 2.0T model and they didn't have one. He said it's to be expected the first batch they received was heavy on fully-loaded cars.
Final point for now... a week or two ago I expressed the opinion that the way Hyundai/Genesis handled the dealer situation -- allowing the G70 to be unavailable in big markets (like So. Cal.) months after winning a bunch of awards, and while the new BMW 3-series was still to come -- was a huge business error. In response I got a lot of pushback making the argument "oh yeah, could you have done better?". Now, what surprises me is... when you look at my pictures, do you see the separate and upscale Genesis dealer that the wait was supposed to achieve? I don't. So I'm wondering, given that the only mention of Genesis I see is some faded flags on the lamppost outside the dealer, why didn't Genesis just make a quick deal to have Hyundai dealers sell the things in January? If you're going to argue they couldn't have foreseen problems in the dealer changeover (reasonable, perhaps) then you've also got to argue that the wait was worth it to achieve what you can see in my pics. I don't know. Sure looks like a Hyundai dealer to me. (Which by the way, I don't mind at all... and for me is another reason that I think it's absurd they didn't get the car out earlier.)
Anyway, happy to finally get in and drive this great car! Now to look for the Adriatic Blue model of my dreams...
