Genesis G80 - V6 or V8? What will be available?

not even

but good luck with that idea
if you think the G80 is competing with the E class /5 series..you are mistaken

perhaps the 3 series/C class

Warren

Sorry, sir - but you are mistaken. Period. But don't feel bad - I'm the king of mistakes so you're little misunderstanding here is nothing to be embarrassed about.

One by one all the luxury brands are leaving their V8s behind in the midsize class. Lexus. Cadillac. Mercedes. I'm sure BMW and others will follow. The Genesis G80 doesn't "need" a V8 because the twin turbo V6 will suffice. However, Genesis Motors may want to play it as the company raising the bar - where everyone else is giving up the V8 - they're still giving customers what they want. BUT... How many customers? Perhaps not enough to matter. Or perhaps it's just for bragging rights? "We still have a V8". But how many people will say, "Look at this dinosaur still selling a gas guzzling V8". There's a lot to consider and I'm not sure there's truly a "correct way" of moving forward. No matter what they do - they will not please everyone.

Sorry if this has already been posted but the Cadillac one got me.

I am pretty sure that GM is not giving up on V8s in their mid-size sedans, especially their performance sedans.

I think that this is more a regional things. Europeans have been big on turbo motors and Americans, historically, have favored big, naturally aspirated V8s. Markets shift and things change as a result of markets and trends. This has seem to cause a lot of shifting to smaller turbo engines as of late. But, this hasn't bled into the higher priced, performance sedans.

Of all the "car guys" I know, one has a turbo car and none of them have a V6. So, maybe my group of friends are skewing my image on the whole thing.

Maybe, in the end, it's a matter of economical versus opulence. What is the image that Hyundai wants to project with the Genesis line?

I feel if Hyundai (or Genesis in this discussion) wants to portray an image of luxury and performance in American, in particular, they will go with a V8.

As a side note, I am a member of the Hyundai Listens Owner Community and have been presented with a few surveys to determine new product lines and design choices. Thank goodness that VW got into so much trouble with the turbo diesels! I felt nauseous through that entire Hyundai survey!

I had more time to read the thread tonight. I see that others have commented on something similar.

I still don't care for the TT V6 over a V8 :o

The 3.3 turbo would be the best bet especially for tuner who could chip that easily for close to Tau V8 5.0 power. For whatever reason, smaller displacement turbos seem to be the fad nowadays. Most believe they are more ecological.

Now lets speculate on the turbo charged Tau V8 5.0 in the N80 @ 485hp chipped to 560hp. :D

Yep - the CTS V-Sport is no mere appearance package, unlike the GS F-Sport.

This is completely false. Can you stop lying over and over. The Lexus GS F-Sport includes
AVS with Sport Plus mode. It changes the throttle response AND suspension. This is not on the standard GS and an option on the luxury GS.
Different suspension
19" Wheels and tires, including 265 width in the rear
lightweight 2 piece front brake rotors measuring 14"
sportier brake pads
optional rear steering

In addition to cosmetic upgrades

While the engine has no more power, the entire suspension is revised. Thus why the car has won multiple comparisons.

Obviously there is now the GS F as well which takes things even further.

Don't think so. Engine choices are:

2.0L Turbo Engine (4 cyl)
3.6L Engine (V-6)
3.0L Twin Turbo Engine (V-6)

There are early reports that the CT6 will have a V8TT option coming soon, but is not yet available.

My understanding that to get the V8 TT you will also have to get the Platinum edition trim which will push the cars price to over $80K

I am not sure what data you are using for your statements
How many new sedans are sold in the United States with a v8 versus other options?
Nothing but the most expensive sedans are selling with V8's in numbers
Those have prices at $100K plus and represent a very small portion of the market in the United States... and frankly a market that Hyundai /Kia doesnt compete with anyway
Even those $100K sedans..Mercedes S class...BMW 7 series..Audi A8...all have non V8 variants available

Even a car closer to Hyundai/Kia offerings..the Chrysler 300...is mostly sold in a non V8 version

Warren

You don't think the G80 would compete against the CTS? I can't even begin to imagine why you think they WOULDN'T compete. The CTS and the G80 are slotted in the same segment as the A6, 5 series, and E class.

no..I would say the G80 and CTS are slotted a class below the mid line germans

There are a lot of options and technology in the Germans that is exclusive

Have you looked at the finish of the new E class?
Its more G90

Just because the cars are close in size and some rough specs doesnt mean that they compete against each other

My Equus...according to Hyundai...was supposed to compete against the Lexus LS( and the large germans)
It doesnt..it has neither the finish, advanced feature set or driving dynamics of those cars

Its more of a mid luxury car that was stretched to the size of the full size luxury offerings

I do believe that the G2 Genesis has made major strides in these areas, but especially in driving dynamics. I'd expect the G90 to do the same based on initial reviews. There may still be a gap, but it's certainly narrowing with each new generation.

I have never driven a G2 genesis...so I cant speak for the driving dynamics
The genesis has always been a very good value for the money
However...one would need to look inside of the new 2017 Mercedes E class and know there is a difference ..a significant one...in just the finishes
then there are the unique features of the car

http://www.motortrend.com/news/2017-mercedes-benz-e-class-first-look/

As well as the price difference in the two cars
I am not sure anyone is expecting a car that is substantially less money to be the equal of the higher priced model
I dont know of any car where that is the case

There have already been some reviews on the G90 that state it does not have the extensive attention to detail and quality of finishes that $100K cars have

and frankly...why would one expect it to?

From the pictures I've seen of both, I prefer the interior of the G90 over the E class you linked to. I don't at all see what is so special about the Mercedes interior? And I'd save a pile of cash to boot (not that I plan on buying a G90)!

So the contention is that the Genesis line does not want to compete with the "most expensive sedans"? Why would Hyundai even bring out this line of cars then? Why not just leave it be and push these cars under the Hyundai badge? When I bought my Genesis, the advertisements all over the dealership claimed that the car did compete with the more expensive German sedans (as a matter of fact, one of the posters had a comparison with the Mercedes S Class). Please see this link:

>>Kim Jin-woo, industry analyst at Korea Investment & Securities.....

..."Genesis will target the same market position as Lexus, but ultimately it has to compete against Mercedes-Benz S-class and BMW 7 series," Kim said.<<

http://www.foxbusiness.com/features/2015/11/04/hyundai-launches-genesis-premium-car-brand.html

My position is not that all of the Genesis models will be V8s. I would suggest that the higher tiered cars in this line should be V8s though.

So, I left myself an out :)

I'm confused. When I went to the Genesis motors site it showed the g80 not getting the turbo? Only the g90?

For the 2017 G80, that's likely the case - essentially just a rebadged 2016 Genesis. The turbo could come in 2018 with a refresh. Speculation of course - but many signs point to the 2017 G80 not having any significant changes.

note these same statements were made when the Equus was introduced..ie..it would compete with cars like the Lexus LS and the Mercedes S class

as an Equus owner..I can tell you it does not
The two cars I mentioned sell far more units than the Equus

also..if you find what an average buyer profile of those cars are I would bet they are much more affuent/have a higher annual income

so..was that same buyer even looking at an Equus?

I dont think so

They have stepped up the interior of the G90 over the Equus
However...neither you or I have seen either interior in person

That makes a big difference
I would also bet they sell many times more E classes than G90's...even though the E will be priced higher
Hyundai states that the G90 will compete with cars like the S class..it doesnt
I think its more comparable..in finishes to the E from the pictures it seems

Its been said here that the G80 would compete with the cars like the E class
I say no...all they share is a similar size
