If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hankooks now a safety recall.

I would presume that Hyundai was notified early on before the public which triggered their free tire swap making them look like angels, all the while knowning that Hankook would be footing the bill. :D

I doubt it - Hyundai would have huge liability if someone got injured and it was shown that they knew that there was a safety defect and had only made the replacement optional. They might have had some concerns upfront, but I think this evolved into a safety defect over time as they got more info/analyzed samples as they indicated.

Got some Juicy info for you all.

Problem for me is I have a second set of wheels and new tires I bought as take off from a new car to use the wheels for my winter tires and the tires as replacements for when the originals wear out. I cannot claim these under the warranty with Hyundai since they were purchased from an individual and will already be claiming the ones that came with my car. I called Hankook Canada with my problem and asked them what do I do?

They said first I need to check the date codes and this is where it gets interesting. He said only the tires made in Korea are being recalled. The also made the same tire in China and Indonesia.

The date codes are superseded by this number which ties then in with at the mandating in Korea. (5MF01AH) and the dates are 2013 up to 0715. If the first numerical digital combination is different, they are not made in Korea and the tires are fine.

He told me to bring the tires into any authorized Hankook dealer and they will replace them with the same tires but ones made in China or Indonesia free of charge. I have a feeling they are not going to find these tires but I will be going to an independent tire dealer to see what they will do come spring. I now know they will take care of me even though I cannot go back to the dealer with them.

Not sure its any different news - hard to believe a car built in Korea would have tires from somewhere else instead of where the car is built. If you are referring to the "5MF01AH", that is indeed on my tires, as I suspect all OE Genesis OE tires in the effected time range.

I went to Tire Rack today and had my recalled tires swapped out. The allowance for the old tires was $209 each for the fronts and $278 each for the rears. I could choose what tire I wanted to replace them with. I received free mounting and lifetime rotation and balance with the tires.

I elected to replace my tires with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires. The Michelins were $65 more expensive than the Hancocks, so I paid the difference. I am eligible for a $70 rebate from Michelin, so I will be slightly ahead.

The Michelins ride much smoother and quieter. They have a sportier feel. The steering feels tighter. The ride feels a little harder and i like that. I will have to verify the cold tire pressure, but the reading on the dash says they are close.

I have not let the car sit overnight. So far, no flat spotting. I have dropped the car off for an alignment (I always do an alignment after replacing tires). It should be ready tomorrow morning.

The main reason I went to Discount Tire was because I could select the replacement tires. The whole process was straight forward and they took care of everything. I did have to make 1 trip for them to get the information off of the tires and a second trip for installation (they were not in stock).

The reason I went with Michelin was I have had these tires before and really liked them. I was also considering the Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06. They were $15 more than the Michelins after rebate.

Excellent news, seems like we can go anywhere to swap with whatever we want due to it now being a Hankook recall. I like it. :D

When you say you went to Tire Rack, do you mean you ordered and had them shipped to an installer? I didn't know they had their own stores.

I am a little confused also as you mention you went to Tire Rack and then below say you went to Discount Tire? These two are competitors.

I assume he means Discount Tire and maybe got them to match TR prices?

My dealer will be ticked off when he finds out I went elsewhere. Why? Because several months back they ordered the replacement tires without my consent and said I need to change them. I proved them wrong by calling Hyundai Canada who said I have 3 years to do so. They still have my tires as they could not return them and are waiting for me to do the swap.

I will be going with the Continental DWS 06 when the time comes. I like that they ride quiet and the tread wear is the best after comparison to any other out there. The most important feature to me in a summer tire is hydroplaning resistance and the Continentals shine in this area also.

Sorry for the confusion, I went to Discount Tire. I looked at the Tire Rack website and compared the DWS 06 to the Michelin. It was a tough choice, but I have the Michelins on another vehicle and really like them. The snow performance is better on the DWS 06, but that was not a factor in Texas.

Appreciate the update and first real confirmation that there may be an option for tires after all.

+1

I have a 2015 V6 with the 18" Hankooks. I live in Florida. How many miles are you guys and girls getting out of these?

I have not received a safety recall letter on the Hankooks yet. I did visit my local Discount Tire store today and asked if they had anything official yet. I was told that they have a "stop sale" on them but no recall yet.

I asked if they could handle the recall on my OEM tires or would I have to go back to the dealer. I was told that they could handle the recall and I could get the Michelin Premier tires that I want if I paid any additional cost over the Hankooks. I certainly hope nothing changes as even though I'm had fantastic service at my dealer, I would prefer DT when it comes to tires.

I stopped by my local discount tire and after they checked the tires they were ready to change them. I asked about the Michelin A/S 3 and was quoted the following rates:
$149 discount for recalled hHancook
$ 196 per Michellin A/S 3
$134 for the tire warranty
$ 15.51 Tax
Total out of pocket $337.51 or $203.51 w/o warranty

I'm not sure if I should do it now but I was tempted when I was told they could have it done today and Discount tire has always had great service. Also, since it's now a safety recall does it mean I HAVE to get them replaced when I go to the dealer or do I still have 3 years?

Me either and that's all I'm waiting for. Although I did take a 1,200 mile road trip this past weekend and I still have the Hankook's on. I have no complaints about them but if it's a potential defect for safety I'll definitely get them replaced.

I've seen everyone mention Discount Tire as the place they've went. Is that just because that's what you prefer? Can we go to any tire shop that has a deal with Hankook?

I called Hankook about the recall yesterday and was told it had to be handled by Hyundai. I mentioned hearing that some people had dealt with Hankook or other places such as Tire Discount for the recall, but was told if the tires came on a Genesis, the recall had to go through Hyundai.
I then called Genesis customer service and was told there is a campaign number (138) and website link (https://autoservice.hyundaiusa.com/campaign138/) for recall info. The rep gave me the link and told me all the recall info was posted there. While she was on the phone I went to the link and told her there was nothing there except to check back "in mid-January" and a recall letter was forthcoming. She checked the link herself and didn't realize the actual recall info wasn't posted there. Then she checked internally with the subject area expert and was told the recall isn't finalized yet. She suggested I call my dealer, which I did; but as usual, we always seem to provide them with more info then they already have...

I understand Hyundai had to handle this however this is now an official Hankook recall meaning Hankook will be on the hook if anything serious happens and I assume would need to swap these out ASAP by any means. My call to Hankook Canada revealed I just needed to go to any authorized Hankook dealer so definitely conflicting reports not to mention a couple have already done the swap through an authorized Hankook dealer. FYI, no need to mention what car this is on, it's a tire recall now.

Thanks for posting what your experience has been. At the very least, because of that link we now have a specific date that we know of.

As it says on that link....
If a customer owns an affected vehicle, they will receive written notification of the recall by first class mail no later than February 19, 2016.
