  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How to: Genesis sedan Power mirror gear replacement

One of the tiny little wires probably pulled out of one of the plugs. Had that happen too. Grrrr

So I had to change out my mirror gear and figured I would do a write up on it since it seems to be a fairly common issue as these cars age. This is for those experiencing the clicking when trying to fold/unfold power mirrors. I tried my best to get as many pictures as possible, admittedly I did miss a couple but this should help for the most part. Enjoy the windows paint art.

Thanks to @BarryG for the original post that helped me find the gear and to @badmrscary for the instruction on how to pop the glass off

Part off amazon:
Amazon.com: Bross BGE552 Side Mirror Repair Gear for Hyundai I30 Chevrolet Captiva: Automotive

Tools needed:
10mm deep socket or wrench
phillips screwdriver

step 1: Remove trim from around the window
View attachment 18252

To do so you need to first remove the little push clip at the front of the door
View attachment 18253

Once that push pin is removed you can just pull on the bottom corner and run your fingers around the edge and it should easily come off. Be careful if you have a tweeter there as there is a connection to remove.\
View attachment 18254

Once that connection is disconnected you should have that trim piece free
View attachment 18255

Once that is done you can now remove the mirror from the car itself. Start by undoing the 3 nuts using a deep well 10mm socket, or a wrench. Then undo the plug.
View attachment 18256

Once the mirror is out find yourself a nice place to work, I would recommend a rag or paper towel to put the mirror on to keep from scratching it.

Next you will need to remove the mirror itself from this assembly, I turned my mirror all the way to the left and then pried from the right side. Be careful as you don't want to break the glass. If you didn't turn the mirror before hand (like me) just plug it back in and do it.
View attachment 18257

Once the mirror is popped free there are a couple connectors on the back to undo, this doesn't have to be done, but it made the job easier once I did it because I didn't have an extra piece flopping around in my way.
View attachment 18258

Next you will need to remove the plastic trim Its just 3 phillips screws and some prying, I started on the same side as the screws. Again be careful as to not break anything
View attachment 18259

Next you need to go to the underside of the mirror, I don't have a great picture of this but you will understand when you see it. There is a cover (1) that needs to be removed to gain access to more screws(2). The screws are already removed in this photo. Im not sure the best way to remove this cover personally, I used a pick but still managed to scratch it a little bit. On the bright side its on the bottom of the mirror and no one should see it.
View attachment 18260

Once those 3 screws are removed you need to remove the one screw you just uncovered

I hit picture limit.........
Extremely helpful for what is a pretty challenging task, even with these excellent instruction. Many thanks!

I seem to have a failed gear but for the mirror component. I can adjust the mirror to goes up and down but can't move it from left to right. Only the passenger is affected. Is it a similar process to fix?

My mirror will fold in and out but clicks, once it gets in or out at the resting spot, it will stop after a bit and all is fine.

What is happening and what do I need to replace?

2012 4.6 Genesis 65K

Likely the start of gear failure. Personally I’d wait to follow the remediation provided in this forum unless the clicking annoys you. Obtaining and having the parts on hand won’t hurt.

Will the gear from Amazon, noted in this thread, the one I need to have on hand?

Yes, the gears referenced several times in this thread work for your 2012 Genesis.

Since mine opens and closes, could it be one of the other gears I see in the photo from the first page?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Thank you everyone, I replaced the gear on my 2015 Genesis. Saved me a bundle as even the used mirror ( I have the tech. package) , it's around $400, just for the part. I believe the dealer would well over $1000. I paid $18.00 and about 2.5 hrs of my time. A few points, the 2015 Genesis does not have many plug an play connectors. Thank goodness they plaved just enough slack on some of the cables to get to the gears. It's almos impossible not to scratch the outter part of the mirror. The 2015 has an outter rim that mut be removed, carefully so you wont break it. So I recomend getting some touch up paint and working the removal from the botyom of the mirror ( to minimize the minor damage you will cause). Dont worry, it's not noticeable ( if you place your screw driver at the bottom and touch up). One last item, do not forget to re plug all elect. Connectors you removed. It's easy to miss an may force you to re dissasemble.

Using painter's tape or some temporary PPF will help with repairs like these.

Nope. One main failure-prone plastic gear and one smaller plastic gear that rarely fails but that you may optionally choose to replace as well.

Are those optional gears listed in this thread or do you have links which one to get? Even if I don't replace I might like to have them on hand just in case.

See post #36 from this thread. Focus on the gear with part #EGE552 or #BGE552 on Amazon or eBay.

Note that part availability is dynamic. The gear I bought from a vendor on Amazon is no longer available. Nor is a 2-pack that includes the smaller gear piece (#EGE590). Because I did not replace the smaller gear I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the part #. It's time for your own due diligence here.

I will go through the thread, just needed direction and you seemed knowledgeable to point me in the right direction and answer questions. In inexpensive I like to only do a job once and be done, I want to get all parts needed when I tackle this. Looks like I need small gear #EGE590 and large gear #BGE552. I will accumulate these prior to starting this.

The small gear #EGE590 all I see noted is on page #4 post #72, he has a 2015, I guess that is the same small gear for all. I ordered the Larger gear and will order the flat smaller one soon.

Thank You Papa D, you have been a big help.

Can you drill a hole in the plastic cover underneath and still an L shape tool to lift it a bit and then pry it up?

Working on it now, so a quick reply would be appreciated.

Drilling the plastic cover is unnecessary. You absolutely can remove it with a thin tool. I used a razor blade and a little patience.

Heavy guitar pick worked great for me. Folks just read through the entire tutorial. It's all there.

Found it, the gear is split/cracked. Doesn't seem like enough to cause this issue, I will check the other gears.
